I very rarely visit my GP. I always assume that things will just get better on their own.

I also don't buy any over the counter medicines unless I'm really suffering.

How are you when it comes to being ill? Do you visit your GP at the first hint of illness or issue or do you avoid them like me?

Is your medicine cabinet stocked up for all eventualities?

Do you ever think you should be more proactive with your health? If you have any niggles or concerns should you push yourself more to go get them checked?

Somewhere In The Ether…

I must admit that I never visit my GP. It’s a man thing I guess; I’d rather suffer and whinge than admit defeat and obtain help

Why is it defeat? If you're getting help you're winning.

I also try and avoid gp's, and always wish things get better on their own. Though when my autoimmune conditions all flare up I've got no choice or I end up on the operating table.

I generally want to be left alone when I'm ill, just feed me and keep me warm!

There are certain things like lumps and chronic problems that shouldn't be left before it's too late, but coughs and colds I won't go for, I'm stocked up ready for winter. *Swigging cough syrup*

I very rarely go to the doctors and tend to self medicate if absolutely needed. I've had this nasty flu virus for 13 days now and have just contacted my GP yesterday as I need a note for work, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.

I don’t go very often, but I do have to have 6 monthly tests to keep an eye on a medical condition, I tend to only go when I’m desperate or really that I’ll i have no choice. Like now I’m on antibiotics but have to get them changed as I’ve got a few of the side effects. Plus I keep putting off going as I need something to help me with my depression. X

I've not had to go to the doctor's for a while thankfully,as it's a complete pain in the arse trying to get an appointment.

I've found GPs to be a total waste of time almost without exception. I was lucky to escape with my life after one particularly dumb misdiagnosis. I don't bother with them any more unless it's truly a last resort.

Medicines I took nothing for well over a year and felt much better for it. I was defeated by the Xmas bug though, took some paracetamol for that.

You dont have to be ill to visit your GP .

Having a routine health check is easy .....you can see the nurse for this ...juat call your surgery and ask for a health check appointment .... simple

They will check your weight, blood pressure ....urine , send you for a blood test ....which can monitor your cholesterol.

I made a bit of a mess of my leg with a chainsaw once that clearly needed stitching. Instead of getting it looked at i spent a few minutes stomping around turning the air blue and then carried on working.

If it is serious enough I would visit the GP for anything else self healing or over the counter seems to work quite well for me. (Kinky)

I have been a few times lately, which age tends to do to you. My dad had two forms of cancer in his life, one that killed him, so that made me more aware.

Having said that, the doc asked if I had any symptoms. "No," I said, "But my dad had prostate cancer so I figured I should be careful."

"Go home," he said,"and come back if you get any symptoms. I could send you for tests but once they have you in the system they'll check for everything and you'll worry about every little thing."

I go when I know the ailment I have requires further investigation or a prescription. Other than that I only go for routine things like smears and vaccinations which are with the nurse

I go to see our gp if I think I need to and for six monthly checks long term health conditions which won't get better on their own and for which there are no over the counter medicines.

I think we all need educating about what needs a doctor and what doesn't and I also think that there is a move afoot to make people feel that they should feel slightly guilty about seeing a gp.

It depends if it's a cold or flu I don't tend to bother going I wait for them to run its course.

However if I hadn't been persistent I probably wouldn't be alive, I had cervical cancer in my early 20's and luckily it was caught early enough.

I'm currently waiting for an appointment with the doctor, I've only been waiting a month!

The medicine cabinet is pretty well stocked for most things.

I go when i absolutely have to. Id rather let whatever it is pass on it own. Last time i went was because of pains that id had for a few days but had gotten worse to the point I struggled to move. I ended up in hospital for a week

A world all of his own

I'll go, if it's serious. Part of the problem is that GP's are so overworked and understaffed that I feel like I'm taking up a valuable appointment that someone else who's more/seriously unwell so I don't tend to bother.

Coupled with the fact that non essential appointments take weeks/months, invariably whatever I wanted to speak to him/her about has usually gone and it's all but impossible for them to diagnose.

Hi Rubi

I hadn't been to the GP for about 5 years. I started to have some abdominal pains 3 months ago, done the Google thing which made me go and get checked out. Turns out I had a very nasty bacterial infection, still being treated now. Whilst I was there she done some extensive blood tests and found out I have a lifelong auto immune disease! Now being monitored every 6 weeks. Didn't realise how ill I was, until I started to feel better. So, please, everyone, don't ignore anything unusual, you know your own body.

In the middle

I rarely go to the doctor, the only reason I go once a year is for my asthma check, and once every few years for a smear test, if I didn’t have to have that done I woudnt go at all
