Plastic to be wiped out by 2042

Well so the government tell us...but there is no plan to put it into legislation.

So is this more hot wind do you think?

I think it is university accepted that it is wrecking our planet and now even China won't take the waste from us.

Your thoughts?

won’t happen, just reacting to what Blue Planet highlighted and feel they have to say something to show they are taking notice and are going to act on it, few years down the line, and you’ll hear very little on the progress.

The only plastic that can be recycled is clear plastic, so even though LAs allow you to put any plastic in to the recycling, only a small portion of it can be recycled.

Virtually every product, except kids toys, has a replica made of a different material, so there really isn't as much need for the use of plastic that we go through. One thing that should definitely go are plastic bags, there's no need for them and paper can be recycled, if they switch to that.

As for it being gone by that year, I doubt it, not under this government anyway.

No, any coloured plastic can be recycled, there’s quite an industry in shredding it so it can be sent back to moulding factories and reused.

The main problem with phasing out plastic is that it’s so useful for stuff and cheap too

I think plastic will begin to be more and more of an issue in politics. I don't think the interest in it is limited to Blue Planet. There have been other documentaries about it before and since and things like plastic bag taxes have been discussed for years before the documentary.

I like the idea of the plastic bag tax and even the tax on single use coffee cups. However, if the government wants to show that it's serious about the problem, they are going to have to legislate about plastic production, not just plastic use. Until they do that we're on the same path we've been on for the last century.

We can all moan about it, but are we all doing anything personally to help ? Don’t buy it!! Use a sports bottle with tap water instead of using those little individual ones. Why can’t people take one of those capped cups with hold hot drinks into a coffee shop if taking a drink away. Small things en masse make a difference. We’re just getting lazy.

The USA has just made massive expansion of its raw plastic manufacturing facilities for itself and export.

This lame UK government is experienced at pushing out non-news that is a distraction from their inadequacies and faults.

We should be restricting plastic production and stopping its entry into the oceans and natural habitats.

May can't even sack her ministers, let alone make significant change other than great messes, like brexit atm.

I never buy bottle water I used refill bottle and I do that for my tea and coffee in my own cup .

Don't do plastic bags either.my only naughty thing I do is I get about 20 charity bags through my door .if I filled them id have no clothes .so i use them as bin linner.

I think no matter how hard the talk the talk unless someone can come up with a substitute to plastic as a whole we will have this problem for years to come

It’s up to us to decide the fate of this planet by recycling properly cutting down on items that use plastic ( which to be honest is going to be difficult enough). They talk about supermarket with non plastic isles. Hmm what will be on these. Bread, loose vegetables , tinned products. It won’t work unless they replace plastic or give everything a shelf life of 24 hours.

Why not us fabbers do our bit and be a bit more conscious about our recycling. I know most of us probably do what we can but could we do better.

We got back from India last week and there they use recyclable glass bottles for all their drinks. You have virtually no plastic waste on the beaches. I remember taking your lemonade bottles back and getting some small fee. I also remember people taking shopping baskets rather than plastic bags. All we need to do is look back a little and we could all save the planet.

I frequently give packaging plastic to the supermarkets, so they have to deal with it - if more did so they would influence less being used. I don't buy plastic water etc and recycle everything possible. Largely I try to avoid buying stuff - local smaller shops have more loose produce and growing your own prevents it completely.

Actually been sat here pondering the supermarket raised this am in th news regarding non plastic isles

Ok. I work in the retail industry so here goes

Products arrive via trucks into supermarkets

The products are usually on pallets but some in cages

Some pallets are plastic some are wood

All pallets are wrapped in plastic wrap

Most cages will have plastic covering them

The non plastic packaging products that go on the shelf are packs in cases made more and more out of plastic whIch more and more replace the cardboard boxes

So you may see less plastic on the ship floor but out back behind the scenes thier are bails and bails of the stuff

saw a bit of a programme about those takeout cups - quite hard to recycle - i think costa or starbucks were giving 30 p off a takeout drink if you took your own cup

Remember when tesco give 1 club card point for every recycled carrier bag you used? Sharp stopped that when the carrier bag levy came in..then they doubled the cost of a bag.

just goes to show you though how we used to use those carrier bags without thought most of the time - im guessing a lot of us had a bag of bags stuffed in the house somewhere - i used to use them as pedal binbags in the kitchen -

It's a regular cycle now. The cupboard still gets to full but it gets emptied to the car boot more regularly

most annoying thing is ,its never us , as in the general public .

i was fine with paper bags .

its always the government makes the decisions , it was theres re plastic bags, theres re quick go buy a diesel car , theres re coffee bad for you now its good , theres re aspirin a day good for you now its bad etc etc etc .

its the government causes the problems in the first place.

Looking at street scenes from the "developing" world makes me think it doesn't really matter what we in the uk do. I don't think we're the problem. We seem, in the main, to know how to use "bins". Any reduction is good. But are we throwing millions of plastic bottles into the sea? No.

I think it's a shared problem. We all contribute in our own way.

I did a lot of research a while back on the nature of the international waste industry - companies in the west make a lot of money shipping waste (mostly electronic and plastic) from the "developed" world to the "developing" world. So not everything you see in China/India/etc. was created there...granted, I mostly looked at U.S. companies, but the trend is bigger than just the U.S.

Politicians will make it happen when they believe it will earn them enough votes. Same goes for legalisation of cannabis and a raft of other issues.

Public behaviour changes things more than politicians.

Unfortunately, public behaviour may not change quick enough to save the species from extinction.

i just put them straight into the trolley - all my veg goes into one carrier anyway and then into the veg rack at home - doesnt need all the gubbings on

Loose...I get spot check on them self scanners...it would be a nightmare if they were all over the place
