Help.. A girl in need please.

Woke up this morning and my fridge isn't working, the freezer is fine though . Last few days it had been making a weird noise sort of whirring but that stopped when you opened the door. Any serious advice would be welcome. Any silly advice will be chortled at as I'm sick as a chip xx

Making the strange noise could be the compressor at fault? If so, it’s probably time for a new fridge or at least a second hand one off ebay

Until you find a solution do not open the freezer doors or it will defrost much quicker. X

Have you checked to see if the penguin that resides in there is still going strong? It's usually a good indicator.

its only 2 years old, just out of warranty (typical)

Mine went off few months ago and the plug fuse had burnt out and was wet .it looked like a mouse had nibbled my plug and wire .

its a self defrosting unit, can that still happen, the noise did sound like a fan turning but badly

Could be the fridge thermostat. If the freezer is still working it sounds like the compressor is working.

If it’s a new and or expensive unit it might be worth fixing but otherwise replace?

Even if its out of warranty you could have.a claim under the Consumer Rights Act / Sale of Goods Act. Have a word with where you bought it from.

Some have two compressors - one for fridge the other for freezer.

If its a double unit by that i mean both fridge/freezer ran from same plug it won't be a wiring fault, does sound like compresser gone and it probably will be cheaper to buy a new one long term.

Short term if freezer is still ok go to a local charity furniture shop and buy a small used fridge for now. Saves dropping a big chunk in January for a complete new one;)

I'm no expert but when you open the door doesn't the fan stop? So if the nose stops when you open the door it sounds like a fan problem to me.

Ohhh i tell you, check if the damn thing is level.. Mine makes a noise when one of the feet is loose!

If the compressor is gone would the freezer still work? x

If that was the case the freezer would be affected too. It does sound more like a compressor problem. They can be replaced but often the cost, compared to a new fridge is not really worth it.

Lesson for the future...consider extended warranty...but source this independently... often a fraction of the cost of those offered in store.

Sorry can’t be more help but I think you may now be the owner of an ex-fridge!

turn it off for a few minutes and then back on,

listen for a humming followed by a click, it that happens then its the compressor thats faulty.

If not, if it has a manual rotary thermostat, turn it slowly back and forth and listen for it clicking on and off.

If its an electronic thermostat, if could be it has become faulty, without getting to the electronics and checking that its trying to power the compressor, its impossible to confirm.

A friend who is an electrician could check for the power to the compressor for you easily enough.

I wouldn't recommend getting a white goods repair person in because it usually works out more than replacing the whole fridge.

Is there any ice buildup in the freezer section?

Some frost free types circulate the cold air from the freezer up to the fridge to keep it cool and sometimes ice builds up around the exchanger in the freezer, blocking air flow.

Had to deal with it a few times with mine.

If it seems like it might be the problem and you have time, turn it off and wait for it to defrost. (Beware of puddles)

If you need it working quicker you may be able to take a panel or two off inside the freezer and try using a hair dryer around the pipe work inside

Problem allocated I think, Hubby took a panel of the back and although we cant see any fan (must be inside the actual fridge there is two wheels and a little rubber band has snapped,off to find a replacement, hopefully this will fix it.Thanks for everyones help and advice, your a lovely bunch xxxxxx

I went on Google when my fridge freezer was playing up, typed in the symptoms and found it needed a new capacitor for the motor lol..cost me £8...didn't really know what I was doing but got it back working
