FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB

WEEK TWO!!!!

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

Well done you absolutely spectacular bunch of people!

49 people reported progress during Week One. That's 49 of us that took a step towards fitness! The hardest part is done - we've started. We just need to keep going and, in eight weeks time, we'll all be much, much fitter that we were.

.

.

.

EXPLANATION:

If you're unsure what it's all about, the old thread explains (linked to below) but, in short, from 1st January, we're all trying to improve our fitness through "Couch to 5k" (C25K) which is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I'm using Get Running). A few people are getting fit by other means including walking and cycling - all are welcome.

We're all expecting to be utterly crap at it but we're doing it anyway - yay us!

Old thread: https://m.fabswingers.com/forum/lounge/711745

New members are still very welcome - post on this thread and I'll add you to the list next week.

.

.

.

THE OFFICIAL MEMBERS OF THE FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB:

Adam 1971 – Bedford M - Done week two run two. Done as a zombie stagger! (Zombie running is excellent!)

Amanda24 – F - App downloaded - she's in! (Welcome!)

Angiechesh – Crewe F - Previously downloaded the app but didn’t start. Did the first session at lunchtime at work. (You started!)

Bitch_and_Twat – Bedford M - Week one done, the third run with a cold. Starting week two on Monday or Tuesday. (Thanks for giving advice too.)

BlkDomWhtSubBiCple Somewhere – F - First run done. (You star!)

Blue Narwhal – M – Wants to get running again. He wasn't keen due to the rain and we haven’t heard back. (Did you venture out?)

BlueWonder – Sale M - App downloaded. Trainers dusted. Week one complete in the cold and ice. Felt good. (It can't be worse that running in the ice!)

Bobtheredelephant - Long Eaton M - Months since he ran. Did run one round part of the Park Run course. Then went up North and planned to run more. (How's the running going up North?)

BoPeep1 - North Staffordshire - F - Did three runs in three days. (Are you enjoying the rest days?)

BustyBeautyBlue_EyedBeast - F - Planning her first attempt. (We know you can do it.)

Chasing waterfalls - High Wycombe F – Wants to lose weight and tone up. Cycling not running. Week one run three complete. Now started cycling and prefers it. (Of course cyclists are welcome - as long as you promise to be crap!)

Cheeky Chelt – Cheltenham M - Did a run. Legs were achy. Planning another run. (Good for you - get out there!)

Conforming_deviant – Hull F - Already started - wants to outrun death! (This is an excellent aim)

Estella London – F - Hoping to start. (Come and join us!)

Evie!! – Evesham – Ran a mile and a half with fewer breaks. (Well done - keep going!)

_xciter7169 – Midlands M - Feels like a dick running about! (You're awesome - keep going)

Frank n Betty – F - Very unfit. Practising in Scotland. Was building up to starting. (How's the running in Scotland going?)

Friskynrisky – Essex Couple - Week one run two done. Two miles in 20 minutes. Longs days at work this week coming but might use a treadmill. (Are you managing to fit any runs into your busy week?)

goodtimes_888 – Leicester Couple - Did first run/walk in 52 minutes in bad weather. (Well done - it'll be so much better in good weather)

Hettsmanson – Stevenage M – Wants to change current routine. Doing Park Run. (How did Park Run go?)

Ignitemybody – F - Thinking about starting (Come on - you can do it!)

Just normal people – Couple - Doing couch to 10k - M: Done week two day two. Sunday walk with the dog. Lucy: did her first cross fit session and scraped her leg. (Well done both. How's Lucy's leg?)

LittleMoo – Oswestry F - Downloaded the app. Intending to power walk. (Did you manage to do your walks?)

Lookingforlust - Peterborough M - Doing week two run one today. Did 3 x 2.5 km last week. Might even try 3km. (Let us know how you do)

Makenchi – Ashvale M – Wants to get back on form. Did a 3km run. Finds it harder to run after work. Trying to do 10,000 steps. (Well done - are you managing the steps?)

Mattb6997 – Brandon M - Thinking about joining. (Come on, join us)

Messagethisbloke – Reading M – Doing this and dry January. Week one run two done. And no alcohol! (How's Dry Jan?)

Mickey and Minnie – Bath M - Previously got to 11k. Now unfit. Week two day one tomorrow. Calves tight - hoping they hold up. (How are your legs?)

Micky-disco – Oxford M - Run for Alzheimer's for his mum who is ill. Done second run. Done his fifth run and bench pressed 100kg. (You're doing so well!)

Miles Away Girl – F - Can't run around sofa. Done first run. Looked an idiot! Week two run one complete after failing earlier in the week.. Dogs dragged her. . Brought us the wonderful phrase: #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug . (So very impressed with you cracking that tricky run)

Missdoris – London F – Doing this and the gym. Was building up to starting. (Have you managed to make a start?)

MrsTrellis - East Anglia F - Week two run one complete.

Nandtfunfunfun – Luton Couple – Nick is running. Previously got to 4 weeks. Doing dry January and running. Week one run two done in the rain and mud. (Really well done - you've made a great start)

Notverywellendowed - Kidderminster M - Has signed up to do an ultra white collar boxing event. Doing Couch to 5k but having pain in shin. (Hope the shins are ok)

NSAchick – Edinburgh F - Weighing up possibility of total humiliation and failure! Took the first step and download the app. (You can so do it! Let us know when you start!)

Nudistnorthants – Desborough M - Getting beach ready, Monitoring steps. Aiming for 6000. (How are the steps going?)

Polarbear73 – Leeds M – Has new running shoes. Starting in Week Two with a 30 minute jog around his local park. (Good luck with the first run)

Redangel_2013 – Southend F - Aiming for a marathon. Done week one run two. Used a treadmill as the weather was bad. (Do you have a marathon date in mind?)

Signorina – Chester F – did mini-triathalon training once. Done week one run two. Been climbing on an indoor climbing wall. Looking for an app to measure distance. (Have you tried a distance-measuring app yet?)

Smallcock43 – Blackpool M - Does getting the app count as training?! Been ill but starting on Monday. (Good luck - you can do it!)

_parky4g – Peterborough M - Put on 4kg over Christmas. Did 1.2 miles and enjoyed it. (Nice one - although "enjoyed it?" really?? )

SSSassy – Manchester F – Said "Ok done" which I take to be good news.

Tandh – Suffolk M - Planning to do 10k in March. Harder on the weekends. Week two day one done. Legs ache. (Nice hot bath needed!)

toppbannana – Chester M - Asked how to join. New starter for week two. (Welcome - let us know how you do)

For those of you lot that run regularly, what keeps you going? I ran in the army as a young woman (hated it) but was so good I kept getting asked to represent in competitions.

I’ve just started to ‘run’ (fling one foot in front of another for ten seconds then clutch a lamppost for three minutes) again at 57 and I don’t want to give up as I remember that awesome feeling of the ground moving under my feet and I don’t ever want to be old and unfit but what keeps you going?

That feeling of accomplishment!!!

I remember the first time I ran 5 then 10k felt like I’d really achieved something

If you're a new runner, you should be aiming to run at a pace where you could maintain a conversation with a running partner. If you couldn't do that, you're running too quick! And running too quick too soon is a recipe for getting injured

Reebok used to have a slogan that was ‘Run at the speed of chat’

Holding a conversation is the correct pace for most runs.

How on earth can you regulate your breathing if you can chat whilst running? Even when I was doing a mile and a half in under ten minutes I couldn’t chat.

Running raises the heart rate and more oxygen is need to cover that. That means deeper, faster breathing, how is chatting possible?

"My conversation would be "call an ambulance"

Absolutely nothing wrong with a power walk, one of the best forms of exercise going. If you jog up to the point you feel you are getting out of breath, then walk until your heart rate comes back under control, then repeat, you will be amazed how quickly the run sections get longer and the walk sections get shorter. And the added bonus is that you'll probably enjoy it more, you'll be less likely to give up 'because it hurts', and you're less likely to get injured.

You go slower until you can "

Speed is irrelevant at this point, it's all about time on your feet, and being consistent in getting out there on a regular basis.

Stick with it and in just a few weeks, you'll be able to look back in amazement at how far you've progressed x

I’m on my feet all the time! I don’t have a car and walk everywhere, not a stroll, a fast, long stride, walk. I used to run for many miles as a teen in the army and I still don’t understand how or why this is possible. Surely the whole point of CV work is to raise you heart rate otherwise what’s the point?

As soon as I jog, even if it’s barely faster than a walk, my muscles need more oxygen so therefor I need my heart to pump more and my lungs to take O2 to those muscles. If I can still chat, I’m simply not working anything.

Please, could you explain the physiology to me because if chatting and running is possible, then I may as well give up all forms of exercise as it’s never going to happen for me.

Running at an easy pace improves the aerobic system which is the fundamental underpinning of running performance.

It increases capillary development and allows more oxygen to get to the muscles and more waste to be cleared away.

80% of your running should be at an easy pace according to most coaches.

A mile and a half in under 10 mins makes you a 20 minutes 5k runner or sub 7 minute miler. An easy run should be 75% or less so looking at over 8 minutes per mile. At that level you should be able to talk to someone.

I can PM you a link to a couple of articles if you want to read more depth. It isn’t impossible but it does mean ignoring the watch and running based on how you feel.

Firstly, you're not allowed to give up, it's against the rules!

Secondly, running and chatting is absolutely possible, for me, you and everyone else reading this. Maybe not now, but if you stick with it, you will get fitter, it will get easier, and you will get there.

I know you might not believe it, and it might seem a distant and impossible goal, but you can achieve it.

10 years go I started running, I still vividly remember my first run, i managed barely 200 yards before i was literally doubled over gasping for breath. At the time, even running for 5 minutes seemed like an impossibility. Roll it on 10 years, and with a bit of stubbornness, determination and "fuck you" attitude towards everyone who said I couldn't do it, I ran 10 ultra marathons last year, ranging from 50k to 100 miles. Not suggesting you want to go that far! But it just illustrates that no goal is too far fetched if you apply yourself and really want it!

So this reply is already too long

, so if youre intetested in the science behind slow running and it's benefits, I can highly recommend philmaffetone.com i followed his training theory, specifically the 180 formula, and that transformed my running and my race times have improved dramatically since, despite doing virtually no speed sessions for a whole year.

Now did I tell you not to give up and stick with it x

"For those of you lot that run regularly, what keeps you going? I ran in the army as a young woman (hated it) but was so good I kept getting asked to represent in competitions.

I’ve just started to ‘run’ (fling one foot in front of another for ten seconds then clutch a lamppost for three minutes) again at 57 and I don’t want to give up as I remember that awesome feeling of the ground moving under my feet and I don’t ever want to be old and unfit but what keeps you going?

It’s the promise of a blow job from all the ladies on here. See if you can sort out a similar reward for yourself "

I really need to get this straight in my head because at the moment it makes NO sense at all.

As a teen and young adult in the army, I ran 1.5 miles in 9.5 minutes. that was just the fitness test. We would run much longer distances and I was often asked to represent in competitions as I was fast, but I hated it. Chatting whilst running was impossible.

If I go any faster than a good, powerful walk, I am unable to chat and that has been like that for years.

How on earth am I supposed to increase my speed to improve my CV capacity if I cannot go faster?

How can I improve my uptake and distribution of O2 if I'm unable to go faster?

I could slow run forever but I wont ever be able to chat through it. I may as well not bother if that's the parameters

we are measuring ourselves by.

I'm no stranger to exercise, just running, and the second I engage in any movement not associated with the normal stuff we all do, my breathing and heart rate increases (as it should) and I CANNOT chat.

I've done four very short runs since last Thursday, mostly a repeated slow jog then a stiff walk. Each time I've managed to do a bit longer on the jog and less walking but there is no way I would be able to talk to anyone and I don't get why we are jogging to improve our health if I wont be able to get past a power walk. I power walk all the time.

I simply don't understand it, I must be missing something massive or I have serious physiology issues.

Please, help me get my head around this.

Topsy I think you're over thinking it too much really.

I've always run at speeds where I can have snippets of conversation through bouts of breathing very hard. The fitter I got the faster I could go but still be able to 'chat' with whoever I was running with.

Perhaps your history means that while you think you are slowing your pace etc you aren't really that much. A lot of fit people I know find it very hard to slow their pace and effort because otherwise they feel as if they are doing nothing.

The take home message should really be that any extra movement someone does is good for them and to keep people interested it needs to feel achievable to begin with.

To be fair a mile and half in under 10 mins is pretty rapid so no wonder you couldn't talk. That's a sub 25 min 5k!

Please remember that a lot of people here are very new to running and so need encouragement to keep going.

I think the physiology is fascinating.

For me though, at the moment, I’m building routine and confidence.

I need to know that I CAN find the time to do it.

I CAN face the world in Lycra.

I CAN get my heart going fast and not panic or die.

I CAN go further than I thought I could.

I CAN go further than I could last week.

I need to believe that exercise is possible for people like me. The crap runners. It’s always been for other people.

So, when this has bedded it, I’ll hone my technique but, until then, I’m going to beam with pride because I’m only bloody doing it!!!!

Perhaps it's just not in you to do it. Your description of a stiff walk sounds like my run to be fair lol if you are army trained then maybe your perception of exertion is different from others.

I don't know but I don't think there is anything wrong in either way to be honest. Your obviously still very fit (even for a self confessed old woman ). It's not a requirement to chat and run but for absolute beginners it's not a bad aim to begin with.

They were saying that we should be able to chat and run at the same time. I'm saying this is impossible. I am desperately unfit. My 'running' consists of less than barely 30 seconds before I have to stop and walk, utterly out of breath. I'm lucky in that my army training when I was so young helps me get it back quickly but I am not fit AT ALL.

I'm trying to find out if running and chatting is what we are supposed to be doing, how the devil am I supposed to achieve that when ANYTHING above a good walk renders me speechless. I can't bloody breathe and chat!

"I did a run with a club today, only problem was it was starting at week 1 day 1, I'm keeping with it, and will do the course with them, so I'm going to be at least a week behind everyone else, on the plus side I found it easier than when I did it last week "

How long and far did you manage? Could you chat through it?

I know, I saw the apology. Apologies for not acknowledging it x

I can't bloody breathe and chat!"

I wouldn't worry about chatting and running....you're running and thats the achievement and that's my goal, hopefully in a few weeks time we'll, hopefully, look back and wonder what our problem was

Just been reading through the thread. My advice as always is just to “do something, not nothing” and “don’t overdo the intensity or frequency and get enough rest”. If this means you can’t talk when you fast walk or run, so be it. Everyone improves in time, I’ve seen it many times with beginners, improvers, and even more experienced runners. So take heart and have a positive attitude.

Right, back to nurse this damned cold and cuddle my own moobs in bed.

Yes.... I get what you are saying. You can't run and chat. It's not a requirement, just a suggestion. If you can't do it it's not the end of the world but you are coming across as suggesting that others are not putting effort in if they can which is not right or helpful. Apologies if that's not your intention but it's how it reads to me.

Just concentrate on the running, your breathing will regulate itself.... Your body knows it needs oxygen. One tip o got from the NHS podcast was to breath in for 4 steps and out for 4 steps.

Not once have I ever stated that other runners should do the same, that’s the advice given to me and others by those in the know, all I’ve done is asked questions about me and what I’m trying to understand. It was stated by trainers that we should not do anything that renders us incapable of chatting. It wasn’t a suggestion, it was stated as a fact and now you’re telling me it’s a four pace recommendation and I’ve only ever managed two!

I’m trying to find out about my running and so far, I’ve had no answers.

Ladies and gentlemen, everyone is different and a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. However, we have to start somewhere and be adaptable and flexible if it doesn’t work for us.

As a returning runner, I’m trying to train in the spirit of the “couch to 5K” programme, so 3 times a week but my runs are slightly longer than yours so that I am out of breath by the end of the run bits. I could talk at the start of the run bit, but not by the end, especially if it is uphill and against the wind.

Some people benefit more from shorter, higher intensity exercise, some from longer, lower intensity exercise. When I trained to race, I used a combination of approaches to keep myself fresh and motivated.

Much love to you all, I’m dreaming of all those blow jobs (for the coaches obviously) when you run your 5Ks

Moobs

How inspiring is this forum and the app.

Monday’s aand Tuesday’s are virtually impossible for myself to train in the evening due to work shifts and child care.

Howerver this morning I’ve done something I’ve not done for a huge amount of years. Gone for a jog before my 7 am shift starts.

Felling superb right now

Another pre-dawn runner! That’s awesome. You can feel chuffed with yourself all day.

Make sure you drop it into a conversation at work...”it is a clear day isn’t it? I saw lots of stars when I was RUNNING BEFORE DAWN”. Then watch them all stand back in awe.

I prefer the early morning runs for numerous reasons-

- no-one can see me running like a #ToddlerChasingAPug

- I have more energy first thing as me and the couch have a date in the evenings

- it means I can sneak a run in before work or the kids start stirring

Week two run two done!!!!

I definitely didn’t want to go out in the drizzle but I did and it felt great!

For one brief moment I thought I got into a rhythm and didn’t feel so shit. Then that brief glimpse of competence disappeared!

My son came with me. He never stopped talking and climbed three trees as we ran. Humph.

But I managed it.

"Any body on here run for a club "

Considered it, but in the end I decided that running for me is about having the freedom to run when I want, where I want, without the constraints of a club schedule. Also, running on my own rather than in a group gives me that "Me time", which can be hard to find at any other time.

So, haven’t started “Week 2” yet as yesterday was busy with work and, ahem, play...and today I have been in bed with flu. Will be at least a couple of days before my body is ready for a physical challenge, but best to be sensible about these sorts of things and one of the occasions where “do nothing, not something” is better than the other way round. Head cold would be fine, chesty cold or flu - no way - you do more harm than good. At least the moobs are reducing as I’m not eating much

I'm no where near, but as I haven't done any running for years I am sticking to the rest day breaks in between each run, my legs definitely feel like they've had a work out.

Did a two and a half hour walk today, forgot to turn my app on but I feel like I'd walked miles

Ok. Second martial arts class done. It’s so bloody hard. Nobody wanted to go with the crap newbie (me) and eventually (after that hideous picked-last-for-PE moment) I was paired with a boxer FFS.

Got my arse kicked.

Still, the instructor said I did well (pity I expect) and I’ve learnt how not to cry when I get grabbed.

How often do they meet? And how did you find them? Are you enjoying the group?

I can see the attraction of running in a group but at the moment i prefer my own company lol I'd just be puffing and panting and either nodding or shaking my head lol

I’m very proud of her she’s walked 1.9 miles each way today

That’s impressive! Are you both doing it?

Get yourself over to the new thread, we need to see success to motivate all the people who are using the 2 minutes of walking time between runs to have a fag

I’m planning on walking about a mile before my evening bus comes and once the weather is nicer I’ll cycle to/from the station 5.5miles each way

Walking a mile is about 15-20 minutes, that’s a great thing to do every day. Hopefully the weather will be ok, not because people aren’t waterproof (we really are) but because it’s a bit grim sitting in damp clothes for a few hours.

Damp knickers are allowed of course, this is still Fab
