Anyone here had to cut spending dramatically or just scrimp and save?

I've made the choice to get rid of my car to become debt free.. i'm a little bit sad but i am sure its the right decision long term. Means i no longer have to watch every single penny

I think most people have to make some kind of choice no matter what there income is. It could be a choice between a bmw or a boat.

Most have to make choices every day. I live within my means. If i cant afford it i save up until i can. Wouldnt get into debt for the sake of a luxury (and yes i do count cars as luxuries)

Don't mention the 'D' word. The grief I've had over the years thanks to credit cards and loans etc. Virtually finished me off and only just getting back to some sense of normality minus the dreaded credit facilities.

Spending was cut to the bare essentials, paying the rent, as cheap a food shop as possible and the utilites. That was about it. Made for a rather dull life for a while.

Well due to the recession and personal factors also

I'm in the position of having to go bankrupt

I have lost my home of the last 18 years

And also have nothing to show for working part and full time from the age of 12

(two divorces didn't help either lol)

However ya just has ta get on wi it don't ya

There are a lot worse off than me xx

My thoughts exactly, I went to Africa to climb Kilimanjaro and visit the villages after, try their level of poverty, makes our moans and groans seem very trivial.

Couldnt agree more, my biggest bugbear is people complaining about things they dont have in this country. Many countries dont have the basic essentials, like food and water

Good on ya, also reduces your carbon footprint and saves on gym fees as you walk everywhere. Been doing it for five years now. It also means I can afford more holidays.

i worked out how much i spend on the damm thing and its about £250 a month. Shocking, having a car did make me lazy. But now i can walk and its only going to be a good thing for my health

I've just done the same and am doing all trips by bike.

No carbon footprint, no sky high petrol prices, no massive insurance or worries when it goes for the MOT. And no need for a pricey gym membership.

Says it all about the state of this island, but let's face it we really need to get rid of this tag of "the give away nation"

We had a two leather sofas given to us last year, one not sat on, that some folk were gonna throw in a skip as they were "changing the colour scheme in the lounge"

Being a single parent on one wage is hard and yes every penny counts. And I absolutely dread xmas hate it. I save my family allowance all year. But have had to fork out for all new school uniform why do schools have to change things.

I don't pay full price for clothes and shoes but scour charity shops. I no longer do all my shopping in Asda but shop around and buy alot of reduced goods. I got rid of Sky as I couldn't afford them and Telewest, I have the triple package from Telewest, besides with the kids growing up they went out with their mates and barely watched it. I have a car but it's a battered 1996 proton my son paid £30 for and I need it for my second job which I cannot survive without. I also walk to my day job and back to save petrol and bus fare. But I often have to delay meeting someone from here until payday as I don't think it's fair to make them travel to me

just a small point but just because you dont have a car doenst mean you dont have a carbon footprint - unless of course you use no grid electricity or other fuels, grow all your own food, produce all the materials for your bike, clothing etc

I too have a very limited budget. I rarely buy new cloths and love the charity shops. When food shopping hunt the discounted eat today stuff. Run an old car and have to watch how many journeys I make, but the rents up to date, there's food in the cupboard and I can afford a couple of bottles a wine a month so, life's pretty sweet.

As i live in the back of nowhere, i need a car and it does cost a fortune to keep on the road.....wish i could do without it but as the nearest bus stop is serveral miles away, just have to put up with it lol!!As for the carbon footprint thing......well lets just say i think its a load of rubbish!!
