Apparently 200,000 people ahve been scammed for thousands and thousands of pounds by online dating scams whereby a guy (usualy overseas) will groom women and after a couple of month will ak for money cos of some crisis in his life....and the women give them the money!!!

some women have been scammed out of £250,000

has this happened to you or anyone you know, i dont think even if i had the money i would lend it to anyone, its just common sense right??

A fool and his or her money are easily parted etc ... it's not like there hasn't been enough information about online scammers out there yet some people seem to either not hear about it or niavely think it won't happen to them.

I saw a programme about it ages ago. They even managed to get into one of the mini call-centre type set ups to film. Half a dozen Nigerian guys sitting at desks with computers.

Typically they were getting women to pay £10-20k, though some women were so desperate they mortgaged their houses.

I know the scam is wrong. I don’t believe anyone should be deceived into parting with their money…… but good god how fecking easy did these women make it! I found it pretty much impossible to feel sorry for them.

They’d all been sent a fake photo, never met the guy, never spoke to him in most cases other than via email.

This is what comes of living your life vicariously through a keyboard.

Every scam girl who wants to talk over yahoo/msn always appears to have some sob story. i.e. meant to make your heart strings wobble and wallet fall open.

It may have been my dad who first said the following to me:

Never lend anyone money unless you can afford to give them it as a gift... in which case why not just give it to them? This way if you get some or all of it back, it's a bonus.

Lending money will often lead to upset or bad feelings when it comes to 'needing' it back.

The advice has served me well throughout my life.

To be honest online dating scams are very much a case of 'plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose'.

I was innocently caught up in an offline dating scam years ago.

At the time I thought I knew what I was doing and was in control of the situation, but as things progressed it became clear that I was being manipulated and set up as a sucker.

I know many, many other guys who were undone by the same thing, very few of them are willing to talk about it publicly due to the shame it brings upon them.

I am led to believe that the scam is, incredibly, still in operation and to this day guys are getting hooked like a Bass in a shallow river on a sunny day.

So as a warning to single guys, here's what you are looking out for.

The scam, like all good ones starts out innocently enough.

The first stage is called 'buying her a drink'.

There is then a (brief) period of frenzied sexual activity between the guy and the scammer.

They then move quickly on to the next phase know as 'dating'

From here, they have basically got you.

The frenzied sex turns into excuses about her having a headache and needing to phone her mum etc.

At this point they then promise a world of endlessly available sex, on tap, so to speak.

By now the guy is so desperate at the prospect of not getting any he readily agrees.

We then move quickly to the next two stages which are know by the scammers as 'moving in together' and 'getting engaged'.

These two phases of the scam can happen in either order or at the same time, but are never usually far apart.

From here the guy is a sitting target for the scammer to apply the coup de grâce of the plan, the 'divorce'.

At this point the guy protests his innocence to the authorities, points out that he has been taken for a ride without his knowledge (assuming of course he is brave enough to admit in public what a twat he's been - many don't) and the authorities show him the documents he singed on his 'wedding day' which mean that, in the eyes of the law, he's fucked.

It's only now, years later that I feel I can speak of the shame and disgrace I felt when I realised what had happened to me when I was scammed and I only hope that my being open about it will help some guys in the future because, as I mentioned earlier, incredible as it seems, this scam is still happening in Britain today.

It is indeed a sad story but your bravery in relaying this tale will help others - tho the scammers these days are highly proficient in deceit and guys are oblivious until its too late. They are also mistresses of disguise too - that sweet girl nrxt door type with the prom dress, cardi and pearls is a vicious manipulator.

I remember watching a programme about older widowed ladies who were going to the all inclusiv e resorts in the caribbean and being swept off their feet by good looking ripped black waiters. These women were giving large amounts of money to these guys in exchange of undying and everlasting love and a promise to set up home with the ladies. These guys were raking the money in with new ladies every fortnight.

I've thought of a similar scam though. I'm gonna go to the caribbean and pose as a 'lonely and desperate for sex widow'. Hook up with guys and have rampant sex for the fortnight with the promise to these guys of large amounts of money when 'the bank are able to transfer it' . Then just hand over photocopies of british currency just before I leave the resort.

It could work

We met on a dating site a few years ago and it is the best thing that ever happened to us - things are even better now and we are more in love than we were at the begining, so they can work!

Dating websites do their own scams too, as we found out, by having spoof profiles to keep you interested and to send you messages that you can't read unless you sign up, so be aware of that too.

Had a telephone call last week from 'the electricity board', which was obviously a scam, so didn't give any details. When they called back a few days later, having forgotten that they had already tried, I decided to give a load of false details, including the debit card number that they asked for. At the end, the supervisor that I was speaking to asked me to remember her when I started getting my discounted electricity bills and to send her a box of chocolates in gratitude, as well as telling me that she only likes the ones with fruit or nuts in (cheeky mare). I told her that I would be pleased to do that and asked where I should send them, so she gave me the address, along with a telephone number - my next call was to the Police and Trading Standards

Haven't read all the responses, so apologies if I'm repeating, but there was a Panorama and Tonight programme about these scams, and yes, one stupid woman did give £250,000 to a man she thought was a retired American four star general. In reality of course it was a Nigerian con artist - living in a lovely house paid for from his ill gotten gains.

A few years ago I was contacted by a man on a dating site. Good looking white male, who I knew from the get go wasn't who he said he was. This was before these scams became general knowledge, but I knew the person writing it wasn't white as they were looking for a "God fearing" woman. Now I'm not saying white folks don't seek God fearing women, but it didn't ring true as something a white person would say.

Any how, I was curious, I knew there was something afoot but couldn't work out what. Well, he gave me his mobile number, and said he was in Camden. He also said that his parents were missionaries and spent a lot of time in Africa, so I shouldn't be put off by his accent - haaa haaa haaa haaa!!!

One...my sister lives abroad, so I recognised the international ring tone, so hung up...I wasn't going go run up my phone bill. He rang me back and how I kept from laughing out loud was anyone's guess...you could have cut his accent with a knife...who was he trying to kid?

I still couldn't work out what his scam was, but I knew there was one. Any how, he said he was an interior designer and he was going to finish off a clients home in Lagos but would be back the following Monday, and it would be nice if we met up for a coffee. I said sure - that would be nice...still not knowing where the con was.

Any how he "left" for Nigeria and the Monday morning I got a frantic call from him. He had been mugged on the way to the airport, all his money and passport had been stolen and he was stuck. He didn't like to ask, but could I please send him £400 via Western Union to get back home and he'd return it to me the following day when we met for coffee...

Haaa haaa haaa haaa...ooooh please!!!

Well, when I told him the gig was up and did people actually fall for that...never heard from him again.

You don't have to be a Rhodes Scholar to smell bull shit - I don't know how people fall for it!

I think some people are too trusting,s ome are lonely and want a partner, so I can understand some getting sucked in when they have been wooed.

But I am a cynical bitch and don't part with my money to strangers so they wouldn't get anything out of me

hey all,

This happened to me a few months back on ud site.

Met a guy who aparently was in the american army working in iraq!! yet he clearly didnt know i had forces connections haha. oh and he ran a import cocao buisness too rich guy hun.

We spoke for weeks he showed me piccys which clearly were not him.

And check this he told me he loved me hahahahaha never my arse did he i maybe blonde and have dizzy days but come on.

He said his wife was killed in a rta and his son was living in scotland with a guardian. He said his son wanted to go on a school tirp to some random place in europe and he coudlnt get his account unblocked while in iraq would i send 1500 to a west union iban number he would give it me back when he came home in 3 weeks to be with me!!!.

the following day he then asked for a further 100 to help the guardian because she couldnt afford the school bits he needed for the trip. He must have thought i fell from a cloud i kept him going for weeks letting him think he was getting the money i had a blast winding him up. He then said because i didnt send the money right away he couldnt trust me he needed someone to trust.

in the meantime i had him ip traced to an addy in manchester slaford to be precise and the woman (guardian) in fife.

When i told him i had been playing him as knew he was a fraud he said he was honest etc etc but wished i died not his wife hahahahaha nice chap and alot of them about.
