Christmas card from my Bro arrived today, sent from Australia. Opened and minus the cash sent for my children. I have told him not to send cash through the post, but WTF, is nothing safe?

You can't trust anyone.

The UK postal service had notoriously high rates of birthday card theft! An international card will be handled by many organisations and people, so would be an unlikely secure service - I would not send $5 in the post ever.

In this day and age who sends cash? Yes you should be able to send it without fear of it being stolen. But only a mug would send it, risk of being lost alone would be enough reason not to send it.

We get a card from Australia every year for the deceased previous resident. They always leave the envelope unsealed and write "card only" on it. I wonder if the fact that it was sealed gave a clue that there was money in it? Not that that makes it ok.

This year they put a return address so we were able to write and let them know their friend had died.
