Quitting Smoking Support

Today I unchecked the smoker box on my profile. I was a fairly heavy smoker but put them down at 3am on 1/1/18 and haven’t picked one up since. We all have our reasons and methods but if you’re trying to quit and have a wobble, it helps to have someone to bounce off and support you

Good on you mate. As someone who has never been interested in smoking I can't be any help.

Out of interest though, aren't the pictures and warnings On The packets enough?

Keep at it!

I’m in a good headspace to quit and as far as I’m concerned I have quit and am a non smoker. This thread is more for others who may have a moment of doubt and need support. It’s amazing to think the money, health warnings etc don’t work but just look outside the average hospital. Oxygen in one hand and cigarette in the other. I’ve found several different methods but this current one is the best as it deals with the mental side of smoking as the physical side is so easy to beat

If this type of change were rational nobody would smoke.

It’s the only way to do it. It baffles me that even the NHS pushes nicotine replacement. Imagine treating alcoholism with beer instead of vodka. Weird. All the nicotine replacement companies are subsidiaries of the big tobacco firms.

Yeah that's so true about hospitals and loads of the medics smoke too. I guess as someone who's never done it I'm just intrigued as to why.

I know a good few people who have given up though and applaud anyone who does, I might not understand it but it's clearly not an easy thing to do.

I do vape very occasionally but that is more to stop myself going out and buying a packet of cigarettes and starting that cycle again

Good for you!

I found the menthol eucalyptus Airwave chewing gums helped, they make your nostrils feel so fresh you couldn't possibly want to abuse them with cigarette smoke.

Nicotine is a very clever drug. It works in ways that makes you feel as if you’re getting a benefit from it. It’s the changes it makes to your psychology that makes it hard to quit. Break that barrier and it’s much easier. If someone turned around and said coffee gives you cancer you’d still see people having a cup. It takes time to rebalance the chemistry in your body

It can work for some people. If you didn’t vape and still didn’t go and buy a packet you’re breaking that cycle even more so. However small you’re still putting nicotine back in and starting the process all over again

I'm three and a half years off them now and like you was a heavy smoker. Wont lie, it is tough at the beginning but you'll feel great about yourself for doing it.

Well done mate. Good luck with it. I think it helps to quantify your efforts and reward yourself. Maybe put the money you would have spent on cigarettes into a separate account so you have something to show for your efforts, as well as health benefits of course. Then treat yourself to a holiday or something. Chewing gum should help you too but I wouldn't bother with vaping if you are considering using that. All the best

Chewing gum and replacements do work but only to replace. If you have no gum to hand you go back to thinking about smoking and that’s not good.

Giving up smoking was one of the best things I ever did for myself!

It's been a couple of years now and it's been tough - I'm not going to lie!

But the thought of smoking a cigarette now makes me feel ill

It's really vile - you never quite understand how vile it is till you stop.

Good for You!

Keep that up for two more years and it's £26k, pretty serious amounts of money!!

Plus it's almost all voluntary tax if that helps anyone.

Nice work! Vaping just shifts your nicotine intake. Doesn’t help with quitting the addiction. Enjoy the boat when you get it!

But it can help with breaking the habit. Alot of people struggle with this. The addiction can be curbed, the habit is a different thing altogether. Some find it easy, but some struggle big time with the habit. That's why alot end up putting weight on when they are quiting.

Also,I wouldn't say people are in the clear after quiting for 6 months. I've got some friends who have been stopped for 5 years and more. Every now and again they still get the craving for nicotine. One cracked after being stopped for 6 years. It's a on goings battle for some.

I agree. You never fully recover from nicotine addiction. I didn’t mean to imply in the clear just that the cycle would be broken of using a nicotine supplement. Breaking the habit isn’t possible when you replace one thing with another. Only way to break a habit is to fill the void with nothing. It sounds impossible but it’s the only. For example, replace smoking with bouncing a ball, if you lose the ball you’ll still have a need to fill so move back to smoking.

Well done OP

I have tried a few times (zyban and champix) but both times I failed due to personal circumstances.

The way I'm trying now, since having a bad chest infection last year is to smoke menthols (i know I'm still smoking) but I can't stand the taste of a normal B&H now... and have also got a vape too.

Just one more month of issues to get out of the way, and then give it my best shot again.

Congrats to all that have broken the habit... I WILL be there with you all very soon

Hiding in the shadows

I quit smoking for 12yrs,foolishly while dealing with a lot of family stress I started again last Jan.

It's affected me quite badly at work, but I just didn't have enough of an incentive to quit, for a long while.

I smoked my last rolly on NYE, been using a vape since, plus eaten more fruit than I thought possible over the last few days.

Day 5 & I am starting to get twitchy.

I've not been around smokers all week, but popping into visit a friend later, who does smoke.

That will be the real test!

A trick I read was when you say someone going for a smoke, don’t envy them, pity them. You have the knowledge that you can still socialise and live your life to the fullest without a cigarette which will only do you harm.

I though going out for a drink would be hell but I used this trick on Tuesday night and went a full night in the pub without a craving. Several friends smoked too. Good luck with your evening but by telling yourself you’re not missing out it’ll be easier

I've quit before, I know I can do it again.

One of my better qualities is my total & utter stubbornness. Once I decide to do something I don't fail.

It's more the effect, mood it will put me in, that I'm concerned about.

I'm popping into visit one friend on route to see another, just don't want to end up feeling grouchy & irritable
