Runners

What's your best piece of equipment ( don't say feet etc) that has aided you when running? I.e a type of headphone, phone holder, etc and why?

I had a gait analysis done and don't get shin splints anymore, so that was helpful.

And I recently bought flashing foot clips so I can see where I'm running in the woods in the dark, and people can see me on the roads.

I don't do much running, I'm mainly a cyclist... but I really rate the TomTom watches. Mine tracks your run/ride through GPS, measures your Heart-Rate, counts your steps, and plays music wirelessly to my blue-tooth headphones. Then when I'm finished, it uploads my workout to several online services automatically.

Have to say I love my Tomtom watch too. Mine doesn't play music etc though as I quite like running without but I like all the in FL it gives me.

Don't run ..

Not much benefit from it if you compare it to how it can damage knee and hip joints ..

Swimming or just fast walking does the equivalent job ..

Actually, knee and hip damage from running is a bit of a myth.

And the benefits from impact exercise for things like osteoporosis far outweigh the risk of joint damage from impact.

Swimming doesn't help for osteoporosis because it has no impact...

Running is hard on your knees if you do it with poor form - run correctly and you should never feel joint pain

Rubbish.

I've had a torn acl for years after a game of 5 a side football at uni. It was forever giving me jip when I was lazy and did no exercise.

Ever since taking up running it has not gone once....its much stronger.

Swimmers knee is really painful... I've had that before now.

And at this time of year when we are often running in the dark or bad light lots of reflective things and lights etc!

And don't think wearing white or light clothing is enough. It's actually harder to see.

My watch and Bluetooth earphones have been amazing for me.

Now when I run infant tell if I'm not pushing hard enough and it will tell me through my headphones how far through my target I am

Many of the PROPPER running shops do it for free (as do some Go Outdoors shops). They basically video you running in a treadmill and assess how you plant your feet. They can then suggest appropriate shoes fir your running style.

I think it was Go Outdoors or something? There was one in Milton Keynes not far from me but there are a few running shops (as opposed to JD Sports) around

Vibram five fingers were a great buy for me, I got my fastest 10k in them at 48 mins and because they mimic barefoot running you can’t fall back to heel striking when tired so I no longer get sore knees,

Yeah. My friend constantly yells at me about how dangerous it is. But it's peaceful.

It's mainly non runners who talk about the damage to joints running does. I'm friends with dozens of runners and hip and my knee injuries are far from common. In fact I know way more cyclists who've had knee problems than runners

I occasionally run trails I'm the dark, I love it massively exhilarating even if it's a bit dangerous!

Always the risk of being hit by a snowplough if you dress in white!

I also often use that compression tape if my shins start to hurt

On the road to recovery after tearing my ankle ligament.

So painful

If you are near Worcester the running shop by the cathedral does it

My advice would be get properly fitted for trainers . Then have an insole built to accomodate how you land your feet. This will help all your joints and prevent shin splints. Works out roughly £100 including the trainers. Change trainers every 6 months too as the treads wear out.

As mentioned above; replace trainers regularly. But not necessarily every 6 month, but every 350-500 miles. To some that could be a year, to others a few months.

Good advise though.

I severe pain with my legs. Mainly calves but pain is spreading up my leg. Had my gait analysis done and new trainers bought but no improvement.

Dr has no idea what it could be other than muscle aches. Any ideas guys on how to combat it? In pain when walking, resting and when running it's excruciating

Go to a running clinic?

If you've never done much running then it could well be just muscle aches from using your muscles in ways that you've never used them before.

I wear Inov8 for trail running and they are brilliant but ASICS Nimbus for 10 mile plus runs. A foam roller is a good friend to have for after!!

Ditching music when running...my times have gotten better, i can monitor my breathing better and can regulate pace better...i now run to how i feel rather than running to the music. I used to hear eye of the tiger and bolt it and be knackered for the final 2k..now i pace myself..plus no music gives me time to think..and appreciate the surroundings i am running in (love trail running)...sorry if this is sounding a bit zen haha...unless of course its a marathon then for the last 7 miles all you think about is putting one foot in front of the other!

Garmin forerunner is also essential for me

I'd also suggest a massage and working on stretching and flexibility

This could be a tight IT band..

Make sure you warm up properly, then stretch and foam roll after your run..look up specific stretches for tight IT band

I had the same problem and it was my IT band, a few sports massages and the foam roller did the trick!

I don't take electronics out with me either. Too dangerous where I run to be listening to music or carrying high value goods around and not fully concentrating.

Just a Garmin vivoactive watch and a heartrate band. And 2XU leggings.
