Modern or Traditional?

I've been round 8 book shops today looking for the Mark Twain book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer so I could read it to my young un and not one of the shops sold it.

I decided to look online and its free to read on there. Although its a good thing to be able to read it from a computer I screen I thought it takes away the comfort and bonding of snuggling down in a chair and reading to your kids, which I remember my parents and grandparents doing.

Times change and always will but are we losing some good old traditions?

I agree with technology and progression but feel we will lose some traditional family values.

Technology is great..........but books are a way of life.

I don't read much, use the PC, the girls on the other hand..........we've a houseful of books which for me is great because I despise the thought of children glued to the PC

I prefer the tactile pleasure of an actual book than an e-reader, but that's just me.

The important thing is reading Mark Twain to your kids, not the format you read it in.

If you want your kids to have a memento of the stories you read to them when they were wee just zoom onto Amazon

Me too.. The Kindle has opened up a whole new way to enjoy my books. If we go away, I have to decide what I will feel like reading before I go, if I take books. With the Kindle, I can read anything I like.

I have loads of classics which in the main are free (see the "Guttenberg project or even Amazon!) and also some of my favourites that I have read a number of times.

Best of all, If I don't have exactly what I want, I can download free books or buy a book online, almost anywhere in the world!

I love the feel of a book and love the smell too, but the convienience of the Kindle is too useful to pass up! AND, unlike a PC, you can sit with the kids and read from it just like a book...

I have an E-reader too, but I much prefer the feel of a book.

The handy thing about the E-readers is the free books you can get online, all the classics over a certain age are free. So my reader is full of them, and I buy modern books. Best of both worlds!!

When i was younger my parents read the enid blighton books to me, mainly the faraway tree series. Loved it so much ive bought them to read for when i have kids of my own.

Look online for book at places like amazon, if they dont sell it, they may be available by 3rd party sellers on amazon marketplace, in new or used condition.

It's horses for course for me.

The best reading experience will always be the good old book.

BUT!

Electronic book readers have their place. When traveling I would never dream of taking 5 physical books with me anymore and all the space they take up. I can have thousands of book on my iPhone and iPad.

So at home it will always be real books - For travel, e readers.

Oh no it has to be books every time for me I have gone through my collection of Roald Dahl books with my eldest when she was younger now I am going through them with my youngest and she loves them plus her horrid henry collection. Reading and bonding and snuggle up time I love it.

I can see the argument in favour of an e-reader for travel & holidays from a weight/bulk point of view.

But, it's important to me that people in public places can see that I am reading Dante, not Dan Brown. Saves on the wrong kind of people trying to engage me in conversation.

Walking past a charity shop the other day, and out of the corner of my eye I spotted Stephen King's The Green Mile. And for the bargain price of 10p!!!

I snatched it up, read it in 2 days, and cried more during the book then I did during the film, which I really didn't think was possible!!!
