Day 3, Run 2 of Twat’s Journey to Moob Reduction:

Our intrepid ex-runner waited for the worst of the wind to disapparate and the rain to disappear (yeah, I know, what a pussy, I used to go out in all weathers).

Unfortunately, Twat’s country retreat is at a dead end and also in a dip...so there are no loops and I have to run out and back (3 options). All options are uphill and I decided to go into the still fairly strong wind - that’s a tip by the way, do the harder bit first.

4 mins power walking, then 2 mins run, 2 mins walk...well I say run and walk, it was more like pitch/yaw/roll and stumble, but hey you gotta start somewhere.

Halfway through my bloody iPhone 6 ran out of battery suddenly - grr...battery replacement on Friday but meant I couldn’t do exact times on the way back...

Rest day tomorrow, then hopefully Fri or Sat for session 3.

Well done everybody for whatever you have done so far - remember, do something not nothing, and try to rest for a day between sessions.

Love and kisses,

Moobs

Crucial even...try not to run two days in a row for ages and ages...better to run slightly further, reduce walking time, increase running time on your days on VERY GRADUALLY.

No harm in going for a walk on your rest days though...or a change of activity to something low impact like swimming?

Compeed blister plasters are awesome! I ran 100 miles in a month and got a blister covering the whole of my arch of my foot once. That was in the Fort 2 days of the challenge.... Compeed got me through the rear of the month!

Finally served our time and can post! Not running at the moment as injured, but add me to the list for offering encouragement, support & advice. Have several marathons and ultra marathons to my name, so should know what I'm talking about!

I can still remember though not that many years ago when I was trying to get into running via the c2k program, and struggling to run for more than 2 minutes at a time, so I can empathise with everyone's struggles & achievements.

So don't give up, you never know where it might lead!!

I've done week 1 day 3 today which means I've done 3 days on the trot, but it now says the next is week2 day 1 does that mean I rest for 4 days? It doesn't seem right, not sure I can get motivated again if I have 4 days off. Can anyone using the app either confirm or tell me otherwise please x

I’ve completed 2 sessions of week 1. It’s official I look like an eejit. Attempting to run makes my limbs shoot off in directions I didn’t intend them to go in. Attempting session 3 on the way to work tomorrow. I doubt it will go well but she who doesn’t try doesn’t do.

You should be running every other day, with 1 rest day inbetween e.g. run Mon/Wed/Fri each week and rest the other 4 days, or better still do some real gentle activity like walking or swimming on your rest days x

It took about 8 to 10 weeks to finally stop hurting but by then the rest of my leg muscles hurt from favouring it...

Embarrassingly I did it walking, had been for a run, then a couple of hours later it just wrnt as I was walking...

Right, tonights run didn't go quite according to plan...

Did a warm up walk and then a few dynamic stretches, back onto the treadmill.

1° incline at 5mph, got to .6 of a mile and then had to stop to answer the call of nature at 7.20 mins.

Back on the treadmill, as I was a bit lighter decided to up the speed to 5.5mph, ran for 15.24 mins and 1.4 miles.

So total 2 miles in 22.44 mins.

Not great but not to bad...

Run 2 planned for 9pm tonight...

Don’t panic, just take a rest day (or two, it’s fine) and do another Week 1 type session...then go into Week 2.

Waves of sympathy from over here, my calves have always been weak, and I ended my running career with lots of internal scar tissue. If anyone does get injured, or already has an injury, my strong advice is to find a sports physio - if you are within travelling distance of Bedford then Philip Duffield on Goldington Road is excellent (he does Bedford Rugby Club and others)...GPs (unless they have a specialism or an interest) have absolutely no interest and will just tell you to rest.

Running is hard on your body, so that’s what the advice about rest days and increasing things very gradually is all about.

Hey peeps

I survived the martial art class!!! And woe betide anyone who attacks me at a cash point because I now know exactly how to beat them to a pulp!

It was weird being aggressive and violent because I’m normally all about the Peace and Love but I loved it!

I think my muscles are going to be stiff!

Agreed and make sure they look at the cause not just the problem.

I’ve only had to use one once and in the initial session he said he could treat the injury and I’d be back within six months or treat the cause and it should never happen again. I went for treating the cause and it’s not reoccurred yet

"run 1 done tonight....combined app with park run course..2 laps are 5k...i did 1!...17.48 mins 'moving time' with my mile at just under 11mins...taking my gear up north with me tomorrow and will do my old run...bit of off road on it and a bit of snow on ground up north so should be fun "

That's really good! Have you run through the snow yet?

"Finally served our time and can post!

So don't give up, you never know where it might lead!!"

"Couch to Ultra Marathon" - sounds like Mount Everest. It's lovely to hear that 2 minutes used to be hard! I'll add you to the list of advisors - thanks.

"I've done week 1 day 3 today which means I've done 3 days on the trot, but it now says the next is week2 day 1 does that mean I rest for 4 days? It doesn't seem right, not sure I can get motivated again if I have 4 days off. Can anyone using the app either confirm or tell me otherwise please x "

Hi

The advice seems to be a running day then a rest day so it's up to you whether you take a day off then move to week two or just plough on.

We'll all be a little out of sync so I'll run the threads for nine or ten weeks and we'll each finish when we finish. In any case, I heard that, once you can run 5km, if you want to stay fit, you have to keep bloody doing it over and over again FFS. Outrageous!

"Right, tonights run didn't go quite according to plan...

Run 2 planned for 9pm tonight..."

Your damn right that the hardest step is the one out of your front door! Once you've done that one, the rest is just left right repeat

You could perhaps consider walking down the hill as a warm-up, doing your run, then walking slowly back up as a cool-down.

I’ve just done the first of my Week 2 runs. I run in the evening during the week and I looked up how long I should leave between eating and running.

There’s one bit of info that says 3 to 4 hours after a main meal or 2 to 3 hours after a light meal and then everybody on forums just repeats this.

I kept searching until I found an opinion I wanted and eventually someone said to give it a try and see how you get on. I left an hour between eating tonight and running and it was ok. I mean it was really tough but no worse than when I’ve run during the day.

Depends how much you eat, and also on the individual and the exertion level of the run. Harder the run, bigger break you need. Experiment and see what works for you.

"Week one, run 3 completed

Just wish my app had a temperature gauge saying 'it's bloody freezing don't do it!!!'

Be careful all early morning runners it's icy out there x"

Check out WTForecast app, you might find it gives you that sort of forecast

My app doesn't give me distance I'm just doing what it tells me (I'm a good girl). Does anyone have an app that's free that will give you the distance? I think it may cause me more pain running if I have to pay for it too! I have an s7 so I'm on play store currently using c25k by Zenlabs thanks x

I use MapMyRun on the App Store but it doesn’t tell you what to do when (I’m making that bit up based on experience). It is free though.

Thank you the first bit is free where it tells you when to run when to walk. But you have to upgrade if you want the distance. Might see if I can use them together.

I use starva it's very Good, tracks your distance and tells you calories burned, you can even link up with friends and try beat their times

Yw - you could just work out what the session is “supposed to be” and monitor the times yourself...it’s only a rough plan anyway...and doing something not nothing is the idea generally (just not too much of the something!)

"I’ve just done the first of my Week 2 runs.

I mean it was really tough but no worse than when I’ve run during the day."

Really well done getting onto week two. That's really impressive.

I prefer to run in the morning and I don't eat beforehand.

If it’s not on strava, it doesn’t count

"2nd run done.

2 miles in 20 minutes dead.

Next week is going to be a difficult one.

Long days with long commute.

There is a treadmill there if I have time but the shower is in un heated building if it works..."

Unheated shower??? No level of fitness is worth enduring that nightmare! Just remain sweaty.

Week 1 complete!

Run 3 was with a head cold (another mantra is head colds are fine to exercise with, but don’t exercise with chesty colds or fevers). Actually I felt a lot better after the run than before it so that’s fab.

I’m not following any programme but doing something similar to what people are posting...power walk as a warm-up (5 mins first run, 4 mins second run, 3 mins third run) then 2 mins run, 2 mins walk until a gentle walk as a cool down at the end.

Stretches? Definitely not before on cold muscles but some gentle loosening exercises help. Afterwards, safe static stretching (there should be lots of advice online somewhere if you want to do this, I’ll try to find some later and post it).

Week 2 for me will start on Mon or possibly Tue depending on work, and I’m aiming to extend the run phase to 2-3 minutes and have 1-2 mins walk phases. For me this is dependent on terrain (uphill will be shorter runs)...I’ve never used a heart-rate monitor but use “perceived effort”, so when I’m running out of puff I know I’m working harder and this is when I’m planning to stop and walk to recover.

Well done everybody, whatever your progress it’s better than doing nothing!

And as an added bonus, combined with no alcohol and sensible eating...2lbs lost...those moobs are GOING!

Excellent! You've done a whole week - you're a ninth of the way through!

Looks like you and I are at the same stage. Are you doing your next one on Monday?

Weights and running! Make sure you do crap weight-lifting. We don't want any level of competence sneaking in to the Crap Runners' Club.

Yes, go for it! I was once told that the worst part of exercise isn't doing it, but the 5 minutes before you start

It's possible to run for 5 minutes? Surely that's impossible?

I think they do that at the Olympics - but it's not for mortals.
