Rat trap cat trap.

Someone on my gf's facebook has put up a post..picture of a fenn trap, they're a closing spring trap commonly used for rats and the like, designed to kill rather than hold. This persons cat wondered into one a couple of gardens down and it broke the cats leg (cats too big for a fenn to kill)

Now there are measure you can take to help keep species you don't want to trap out of said trap, setting it in tunnels with limited access etc. The person who had set the trap seems not to have done this and set the trap more in the open..or at least somewhere that the cat managed to get to.

My question is i guess is the trap setter to blame for not ensuring the trap was protected against none target species as much as possible or...should the cat owner accept that they can't control what other folks do in their gardens and accept that there are risks to letting a cat out?

I'm a bit torn on it....it's easy to set a safer trap but on the other hand it's not up to everyone else to make their gardens cat friendly.

What are your takes on it?

. They could of used a live catch cage!! Then the cat would still be ok

It’s a bit odd using that kind of trap outside, any kind of creature could have been caught?

At the end of the day it’s their garden and if it’s a legal trap, they are entitled to use it on their property (and I say that as a roaming cat owner).

True. but they didn't. I prefer a fenn but know how to use them.

This person may have just been lent a trap or something (you tend not to find Fenn traps in wilkos or shops in town) and just set it for a rat innocently not thinking..I dunno..I've no details on that front..just that it was set in their garden.

I use them but in limited entry tunnels..this person may just not have known to do that and just wanted to keep rats down, borrowed a trap and ended up hurting a cat.

It seems pointless to have humane traps, because the mice or rats are in one's house for a reason and putting them outside again will not cause them to rethink their housing stategy. Either learn to live with them or learn to live with your mammal-killing conscience.

As far as blame for the cat's leg goes, that's one for the courts. Judge Rinder might be able to sort it out.

. Statistically never more than 3ft from a rat.........and in some bars they're even nearer ( one for the ladies that one??)

You can use them outside quite safely if you know how to set them to limit the target species..in fact i've only ever seen them used outside really.

To me, he should have made it safer. On the other hand though, they might not have known how to or might not have thought to do that and just set it and left it. again though, it's their garden so I'm still a bit torn on it.

I don't know..nothing was said about that in the post, no mention of previous cat hating behavior..

I'm gonna assume for this thread it wasn't intended for the cat.

Having 3 cats myself I would go through the roof if something like that happened to one of my cats. I think house owners should not have that kind of trap in their gardens, I have never heard of one before in a domestic garden. It could trap a hedgehog or other harmless creature. XXX

I use them in mine from time to time but in tunnels cats and larger animals can't access..easy done.

They're legally allowed to be used for rats etc.

If a dog went in someone's garden over the fence and fell down a big hole say, would that not be the dog owners fault for allowing their dog into the garden? It's their garden..they can dig a dirty great hole if they want.

If I had a cat, I'd have to accept there may be things out there unsafe for it..including other people's property.

It feels like this is one of those no right answer things..the trap should have been better protected and the cat hasn't got an automatic right to a safe environment in everyone else's garden

I dunno if it's a legal obligation to do so. On a moral level i agree. I'm not a cat person but wouldn't wish one hurt.

It feels like the trap setter was a bit ignorant of possible other dangers and just bunged one down
