I know we all like to get something for free BUT.....

im an independent musican ive worked hard for years to be able to scratch a living from my music, today i found my new album torrented on about 8 different sites and i havent finished paying for it yet! Where will the new music come from if bands like mine have their work stolen, cos we wont be able to afford to carry on.

Please support independent musicans and dont give away their work or steal it off them xxx

I am not familar with torrented music so googled - still non the wiser.

Please explain more Ems and also where can we buy from you directly or the correct source? Please reply to that bit in PM would love to listen to your music xxx

I have used torrents but its normally music from the 60 and 70 era.

Dosn't sharing increase your popularity? Many new bands encourage this as long term they make their money from live shows and getting people into your music will up the number coming to watch you live.

I know quite a few people in the music industry and there are ways to copyright your music by having your own software/player.

But all of the people I know say its touring and merchandising where the money is.

Hope you find success. Get out there and take your music to the people

I Agree with Doctor Rock.

Before file sharing independant musician without record deals would have no chance.

Today people can download peoples music to see if we like it, if they do, they can then go and purchase their work!

This is how Kate Nash started, she gave away her music for free, to get a fan base, then when she had built that up she began charging for her work and she apprears to have done very well out of it too.

This not only works for music but samples and applications. I too like to make music(dance/chillout) and require samples and studio software. I can download most if not all of these from torrents and usenet(better than torrents I think) check them out and if I want to use then I can the purchase them(which I do), this stops me wasting loads of money on studio applications or samples that I don't need/require.

I sympathise with the OP's plight but the argument above is difficult to reconcile with reality.

We have had new music for many thousands of years before there ever was a recorded music industry.

The music industry is not the first to have ever faced a competitive threat. It needs to come up with some better ideas or risk irrelevance, just like pretty much everything else.

I am a radio DJ (internet) and recently interviewed Hue & Cry and Johnny Hates Jazz and put the question of piracy to them both, they answered exactly the same "your in trouble if your not pirated" at end of day see the good in it, i understand you need the money to produce your next work, but there are many many more people out there who will buy than the illegal downloaders. OP Please send me details of your music my station works with a lot of new unsigned artists and promotes thier work, also we have a new music chart as well

Thing is when do you stop giving out freebies?

Even well established artists do that once they have been heard.

Not all musicians are looking for chart success and are destined to make a decent living, not megabucks. There are different levels of success and drive.

If megabucks comes along then kudos if illegal donwloads are slaking off a small profit margin on every piece of work I can see that becoming disheartening, so the essence of the OP not to exploit all new works and jeopardise future ones, is understandable in my opinion.

If we were exploited in our workplace we would feel the same and not all of us are striving for anything other than a living.

I dont really agree with copying music from new artists but the established acts such as U2, Oasis, Rolling Stones that have been putting out drivel for years deserve to not get anything from their records!! Touring does make more money but since the ease of downloads, most record companies haven't gone bust as they werent far off and unfortunatly we need them to uncover talent so need to not rip them off.

Now movies is a different matter altogether, as 99% put out is rubbish and the industry is so bad i see no problem in ripping their films. anything good id pay to see at the cinema anyway!! unfortunatly that is few and fewer these days xx

Alas torrenting is not going to go away.

Best people can do is accept it as free publicity, and hope that enough people who find your music that way, may in the future buy a copy.

Alas most industry/gov attempts to make things better are geared towards big business and not the smaller producers of content.

At end of the day, if we all want to enjoy new music that is not just production line material we need to buy it and support new acts.

With things like Spofify etc.. coming along people actually buying music directly may become a thing of the past.. it's easier and cheaper to hire (like on spotify) 12 million records for a £5 a month, even itunes cannot compete with that!

so... yes the music is original and probably a niche market or underground as we like to think, not looking for ,nor ever have, chart success as to me thats not real music.

We give away our music all the time, are on spotify, last fm, jango etc, but as we are PRS registered we do get an income from those (albeit a small one)

Just to have an entire brand new double album given away by someone else REALLY pees me off! xx xx

I put my own music on torrent sites myself. The internet is the only way to get your music heard these days. You can't tour and play local pubs and hope for a record industry scout to come and find you.

OP embrace the new technology and make it work for you.

I put my music out for free on torrent, YouTube, sound cloud, the sixty-one etc...

I sold one of my tracks by doing that to a computer game manufacturer. It's not massive money and you are not going to give up the day job. but it gets it out there with a step in the right direction.

Unless your music is aimed at teenage girls then you are not going to sell a million mp3's on iTunes.

If you can get your music used on a TV advert then you know you have made it. Like Mord Fustang just did a few weeks ago and now he's gonna blow up bit time.

i have embraced the internet and do about 60% of our business on it, and have songs up on the media you mentioned, the difference is I put it there.Also this is my day job, i just about make a living from live performances and sales and bit n bobs of other strands of a musicians life, the mainstream industry is not for us (we're too individual, too old, too ugly`) my main point is that if people dont support independent musicians you will be left with the dross that the mainstream feeds you! x

I can't help but feel you are very negative on main stream music. Now we all have our preferences and people have more intelligence than you give them credit for and to label everything other than independent music dross is quite insulting. You had my support but after that comment you have lost my sympathy.

The bottom line is the cat is out of the bag and the model of making music then putting it on a playable format for the public to buy in a shop is dead.

But, home taping didn't kill music, and neither will torrents, downloads or file sharing.

There will be new successful business models based round the new technologies, but at the minute they are all based on the old model with a twist, which is why they fail.

As a consumer, who has no particular interest in who makes what money where, or how, why would I pay for something I can get for free?

Well we will have to differ on that one. I know many artists who are not looking to gain financially from on line music they are looking for exposure. Its free advertising after all.

Sharing is such a nice comfortable way of saying stealing isn't it. May be the rioters were not looting but were just clothes sharing.

Just because someone finds a way of taking something without paying for it and then calls it ‘sharing’, doesn’t make it right.

Not if you don't want to. Having it forced upon you by others giving it away then feel peeved.

After all anyone going to the wholesalers today and as theyre packing the goods into their van, someone comes along and starts distributing it to passers by and says - I thought it was ok as your van has your shop name on and is getting free publicity, would cause a ruck. Why is the music industry any different?

I can both sympathise and empathise with your situation.

But. Rights and wrongs, legal or illegal aside, if you do not have a means of controlling the sale and distribution of your product you do not have a business.

The fileshareing, torrent and download cat is out of the bag. It is not going back in. Ever. You can't uninvent it.

Even if someone has bought a 'legitimate' copy of your music, once it is in their hands you are powerless to stop it being re-distributed for free.

It's a bit like Ryan Giggs trying to sue everyone on Twitter who outed him as the footballer with the questionable morals. Legally, he had a case. but in reality, taken thousands of people to court was never going to work.

As time goes on (see my previous post) new business models will evolve, probably involving people paying a fixed monthly fee to download a broad range of content, but until this happens people not paying for music will continue to be the 'peeing in the swimming pool' of the industry - loads of people do it, but it's seen (rightly or wrongly) as a victimless crime and the wherewithal to stop it happening simply does not exist.

Publishers of the written word are in much the same boat, E-books are becoming all the rage. The industry is in it's infancy but it won't be long before someone finds a way of sharing books in the same way as music is shared now.

Book publishers and authors will face exactly the same problems that the music industry does now, for exactly the same reason - they are analogue industries in a digital age - the model they are built on is simply no longer viable because they do not have the means to control the distribution of their product.

yeah your right, i just hope that luddites like me will prefer to hold and own a book on their shelf, just as i hope music lovers will cherish the actual hard copy of the music , we've made our albums nice things to own with good artwork and lots of pics/lyrics etc, have to hope that swings it (so to speak!) x

I love books and I love owning them.

It's a tactile thing, you can touch it, hold it, feel it, display it in your house. You feel that the copy of a book you own is 'yours', in the same way that you would feel about owning an album.

But MP3's take away that sense of the music being an actual 'thing' that an album or even to some extent a CD is.

Who needs to torrent when youtube have videos on their site that are easy to download and then all you need is a freeware mpeg stripper that takes the video out leaving just a wav file. Burn it onto a Cd and there you go.

I buy my music at our independent music shop...the owner really understands his music, and has learn`t my tastes...but he also turns me onto different stuff...he`ll quite often spend 20 mins with me...playing different stuff...

The same holds true with my independent book shop....

I can`t imagine not holding and smelling a book...same with a cd...its tactile and involves all my senses...

I like the independents fer the service, and I like the owners, so feel the extra money spent is worth the smiles..

I'll put money on the fact that no one here would go into a record shop and steal an album, but some are happy to steel an artists work from the Internet. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but is down loading copy right music from file sharing sites not still illegal.
