Calling all bookworms, bibliophiles, literary-lovers!

I’m making a concerted effort to make even more time for reading in 2018, but furthermore to actually spend time discussing the books I’ve consumed, and to make recommendations and seek ideas for new books - “if you loved that, you’ll adore this...” - and I’m wondering if anyone would like to join in?

I’m thinking of a loosely-based book club idea - with no burdensome obligations, but to share which book is coming up, invite opinions and thoughts once it’s read from those who have also read it, possibly discussing interesting themes that come up and ideas for tangential or clearly linked further reading.

Regardless, I’m probably going to be positing thoughts from my reading as per usual in the forum, so anything more defined is not necessarily a necessity!!

Let me know if this might appeal to you and I’ll bookmark (!) your name, and let you know when I’m up and running.

Meanwhile, what book are you aiming to read next? And what book would you recommend to others to start the New Year reading?

I’m finishing up re-reading The Handmaid’s Tale - Margaret Atwood currently.

Next up, Kate Tempest’s The Bricks That Built The Houses.

Happy to take recommendations for novels you should read before you....stop reading. I’m doing the book challenge to read as many as possible this year.

I’ve decided this year that I’m going to read some Classics. I’m starting with To Kill A Mockingbird.

(Currently I’m reading the “How To Train Your Dragon” series of books aloud to my daughter )

Yes, it’s a muscle that you need to keep in shape. I’m doing the “get comfortable with reading a chapter here and there” approach, rather than my penchant for wanting to create the perfect atmosphere and sit and read for hours. Now it’s, oooh I’m carrying my book and on the bus or sitting in a waiting room or whatever.

This is my intent too, I want to have assuredly ticked off the classics that I know I chastise myself for not yet doing, especially those that I think I know despite not having read!! Such an intellectual masturbator!

To Kill, is brilliant. Enjoy!

Oh, yes! I'm definitely up for this. Since graduating the amount of books I read a year is shockingly poor - I'm aiming for at least one a month this year but obviously life allowances can be made.

I've ordered Angela Carter's The Passion of New Eve and am hoping that will restart my love of literature.

Posting to book mark, i'd like to see what books folk recommend as i'd like to read more in 2018. I've not been able to sit and switch off enough to read for a few years but last Summer i read Dawn French's According to Yes, and that whetted my appetite again.

I bought my Mum Tom Hanks, UncommonType: Some Stories and hope to read that over the Summer.

In the meantime, I've had a few books for Christmas. I've had some easy reading fiction which i'll save for sitting out in the garden when Summer arrives.

In the meantime i have The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall

Minimalism for Families by Zoe Kim

And

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying by Marie Kondo

I have a tendancy to hoard and anything with any emotional attachment i keep, so need to learn to let it go, hence the latter books.

Yes, one a month is an excellent goal! My friend has shamed me doing the Reading Challenge two years in a row and achieving over 80 books each year! Each year!!! He would post up the book on F-book and people would make comments and recommendations for other books and it gave him a visual reminder of which he had done and then at the end of the year he selects his top 5. It’s been inspiring. I just want to find my proper reading rhythm again, this year was heavily work orientated. 2018, as you say will be the rediscovery of the love of literature. I’m going to go to Persephone Books in London and treat myself.

I’m also adding the Angela Carter to my list.

Yes, I’m addressing my hoarding (both physical and mental hoarding) compunctions this year. Unburdening and flying free!

Yes, I had difficulty this year to read fully for pleasure. It was probably due to stress and a lot of change going on for me. I’m keen to find that hungry joy of getting fully lost in a book again, and feeling like I’m using my downtime productively and soul nurturingly!!

I’m going to tick off from the “100 books everyone should read before they die” list (google to find) - why not get someone to pick a number between 1 and 100?

Alternatively, come post some recommendations Fabbers!

Love Gaiman!

I have a penchant for Ian McEwan, Sebastian Faulks and Kurt Vonnegut. And a friend introduced me to Iain Banks.

My friends are great at recommending naughty books. I will look up some of the ones I’ve got on my kindle. Once you’ve read a couple it automatically recommends more x

If you fancy some pick it up put it down reading, and don't mind sci-fi, find 'Under Compulsion' by Thomas M. Disch. It's a series of unrelated short stories, some better than others, but there's one that really sticks with me; about the last man on earth deciding if he should reject the last woman...

I’m reading the English translation of The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it.

I am a great D H Lawrence fan but must be one of the few to hate Jane Austen (and Charles Dickens)!. Had to trawl through the whole works of both as part of my English degree. Favourite classic authors include George Eliot and James Joyce

I recently finished Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl", so was delighted to see the movie was on a few days ago. But the book was much better.

I liked it so much I immediately got another of her books, "Dark Places," so currently reading that.

Also recently read "Missing, Presumed" by Susie Steiner and enjoyed that so much that I immediately read "Persons Unknown." They're sort of detective novels with Tony Parsons' type of flawed characters.

And I've got the new Jack Reacher waiting.

I’d love to be included! I’m def aiming to get into reading again this year, I’ve really let it fall by the wayside and it makes me sad.

I’ve just made a good start on Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, so I think if I can finish that it will get me off on the right foot for 2018

Just started bioshock rapture, the novelised prequel to the bioshock games and thus far I like it..

Planning an underwater city to hide from a perceived dystopian earth and to have a society down there awaiting the time they can come back to the surface after mankind has wiped it's self out (it's set just after the Hiroshima bomb was dropped)

Not so far into it but want to start the games and thought it was a good way to get the down low on he backstory.

Might be good for gamers too..bit of geek cross over type thing seen?
