New year challenge

Get a notebook and make a note when good things happen.

Maybe someone got you a coffee when you were busy.

A note about the amazing view when you were out on a walk.

A smile and funny comment from a child.

Having a great night out with friends.

A nice compliment from a stranger.

Then on NYE 2018 you can look back at your happy times.

Does anyone do this? Will you try it?

You have to get into the habit of making notes - keep the notebook somewhere you'll always see it. Maybe on your bedside table.

It’s a lovely idea but I’m not much of a journal keeper. It would soon be full of half written poems, reminders and doodles.

It's a lovely idea but what happens if you end the year with an empty book?

Lovely idea. Maybe use a digital alternative (I know some love the act of writing) and add photos?

"It's a lovely idea but what happens if you end the year with an empty book? "

Force yourself to think of things.

I know it sounds really cheesy but at the end of the year it's nice to look back at things you will have forgotten.

How you all laughed when your mate walked into a lamppost. When a work colleague said you'd done a great piece of work. When a stranger held a door open for you and gave you a smile.

When someone gave you their all day parking ticket as they were leaving, so you didn't need to get one.

I've got a notebook. It's a work in progress thing. I started a bullet journal. (Google it). It's this type of thing.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I did your good things jar a couple of years ago. It was a good exercise and reminded me that even when bad things are happening there are rainbows.

One year I took a picture a day and reviewed that at the end of the year.

I've just written my review of my year in my journal and found it to be mostly good.

You remembered the jar. I think it was Diamondsmiles that first mentioned it. I love the idea of a photo a day.

My jar looks full this year, ready to open later.

I love this idea and I’m going to try hard to do this.

It’s too easy to see all the crap stuff and forget all the nice stuff that happens.

Thanks OP

For years I’ve kept an alternative bucket list

Instead of the stuff I want to do before I die, it’s a list of the really cool stuff I’ve already done that would probably be on other people’s bucket lists

If ever I’m feeling like stuff’s not going right, it always brings a smile and reminds me how lucky I am

I'm going to try and keep to writing a journal of things that happen.... Good or bad so that I can reflect on the year next year

Yes it's a great idea but needs quite a bit of discipline, which I tend to lack!

Hiding in the shadows

We have a large jar, a small notepad & pencil.

Every night, we write something good that happened that day.

New years eve we sit down & read through them.

Had to edit a few if mine this year, not sure my kids need to know certain things

In cave behind a waterfall on a hill

I love this idea.....

It's a long time till NYE 2018 I would probably lose the notebook and my writing is worse than my typing.

A suggestion if I may OP....

Instead of waiting a full year have you considered turning it into a weekly thread on here so those who want to can share in the journey?

That's a great idea, you can run it if you like. It can act as a reminder for people to add to their notebook/ jars.

That's actually a fantastic idea, plus it would help to review when your having a crap day.

I'd love to say that I could do this but I would probably fail to keep it up for the whole year

It's also a great habit to end each day spending time reflecting on the positive things that you've observed or experienced that day.

We naturally remember the negative - it has an undue force in our mind, disproportionately outweighing the positive, unless we keep things in perspective.
