i passed my heavy goods vehicle licence as a youngster ,it was an achievement

ive never really driven lorrys as a career but ive hired a few , helping people move , did some agency work a few times , i very much doubt i will drive one as a living .

anyway would you or wouldnt you re new is my question .

my gp surgery just rang as the medical to re new is tomorrow

£160 quid

im thinking is it worth it .

could cancel the appointment and let it go .

With a HGV licence, you will always have a job to fall back on if your chosen career path fails for any reason

£160 is a small fee for that security

once its gone its gone .....

i have a few licences , pco ,(public carriage office ) uttlesford council hackney carriage etc etc , ones i need for chauffering ..

so far your thoughts are pushing me to keeping it

personally i dont need my crb checks but i keep them renewed as you never know!

Have you got an up to date drivers Cpc ? Without that there would be no point in taking the medical as you can’t drive professionally without it !

On the other hand , if you hire a HGV for private use , neither is required by law as it’s not for commercial purposes

im thinking is it worth it .

i understand ,the medical is just to keep the hgv side of things up to date on my drivers licence ,including what they call grandad rights as i passed 30 years ago.

should i drive for a living i know i can take a 5 day cpc course , which ive heard is a bit of a myth , you watch or learn the same video every day and pass.

Yeah , but it’s expensive , approx £450 , something to think about , plus it has to be renewed every 5 years

I'd go for it. If its going to get you work that pays more than what you'd earn without it, its progression.

it is expensive , and you learn zero from taking your cpc ive heard ..

im going to take the medical , now only 55 quid after a quick bit of googling so at least my licence stays legal.

The outcome is ive cancelled the medical with my GP , ONLY because he wanted £160

Ive re booked on line for £50 with a company that specialise in the said medical ..

i noted when booking just ten minute time slots which kind of proves to me its going to be blood pressure , eye test , heart beat , etc , in and out basically .

my GP charges were astronomical..

After all i dont drive lorrys and probably wont , just wanted to keep the category on my licence.

Keep it going. But look on the net as you can get it a lot cheaper then your GP. If you have medical problems then it's best to do it with your own GP as he will know your condition better. Mine was £120 plus you need to do an eye test not all GPS do the eye test.

There’s no long term security at all in driving jobs. With autonomous vehicles becoming commonplace in the next few years driving jobs will be the first to go. I’d look at other careers if it’s job security that’s important

cheers , ive no known medical problems and my gp will only do the neccessary as requested on the dvla form .

place ive rebooked with include the eye test and all for a bullseye.

You can get medicals at much more reasonable prices.

Go in any Truckstop and pick up Truckstop news it's free and always full of ads for medicals.

I pay around £35.

I needed to renew mine a few months ago, and paid £50 for it.

Also posters are saying about CPC ... this is a requirement to show competence in driving standards, and must be renewed every 5 years... each course costs approx £40 (5 courses)

And then you need a digital tachograph card if you want to drive anything newer than 2005... yup it's all a con from those above is mere mortals, but it is also a necessity of you are a PSV/HGV driver.

Personally I think it's worth renewing, as it is what i do for a living.

this is correct, our company have a regular registered doctor that specialises in hgv/pcv medicals, thats all they do now and charge £55.

those that charge £160 etc are no more qualified but think they have a license to print money

We were on a placement in a GP surgery in Stockport when the fattest, wheeziest, sweating old boy came in stinking of fags with grease stains down his shirt.

The GP said to my mate and I 'I don't think what happens next will be very educational for you lads, take yourself off for a brew..'

When we got back, brown envelope on the desk stuffed with twenties...

The outcome is i am now paying £50 privately with a registered private doctor and company that specialises in heavy goods vehicle driver medicals instead of £160 with my own gp

going private is the cheaper option (not a being negligent option to obtain the said medical)

Worth renewing. The Doctor confirmed I had Sleep Apneoa and diabeties at my renewal. I don’t drive trucks for a living, never have done but was worth doing the medical anyway. Paid £60 four years ago so I think £160 is a bit dear.

I hope they will; I'll be interested to hear how long your appointment lasts.

I've watched, as in the same room, doctors carry out 'medical examinations' in which they didn't even touch the individual, let alone ask them to undress; this despite them knowing that I'm the one that was intending to employ them.

Signing of fitness for work, on the basis of the individual answering questions, without having checked the entire medical record is not something that I'm prepared to do.

I'ne never been touched or asked to undress for my medicals. Eyesight,blood pressure and a urine sample to test for diabetes is about it,as well as the questionnaire. If there are any conditions that your GP is aware of,don't they have a duty to inform DVLA? You certainly have that duty yourself,if you failed to declare it you would probably lose your licence at the very least.

Crb is now dbs if your up to date but new rules on that mean each place you work or help have to carry out their own dbs so another minefield I have 7 from different organisations and they all have to pay what a con

As far as hgv/ lgv I keep mine just in case

So..........

The outcome of my £160 medical with my GP to renew my HGV licence.

Basically i shopped around after some tips on this posting and went for a private medical for £50.

Having had driving related medicals before the private GP did exactly as my doctor would have , ie pulse , blood pressure , heart rate , eye sight test , reflection test , etc etc etc , asked me some medical related questions (remember you sign a declaration declaring to the best of your knowledge its true). i paid £50 job done .

New licence came yesterday so all sweet .

lets be honest , £150 quid off my own doctor was daylight robbery.

there are a few who do hgv meds out there if you look it keeps the licence up i got mine back after an accedent easy enuff i cant be botherd doing it for a liveing anymore down to the way the industry is ive now got an off shore licence which i had to exchange and dont need a med till 70 lol just find one on here that does meds is the best way by here i mean the net lol unless any docs on fab do it
