Hair dye-salon vs DIY

After shelling out a small fortune in the hairdressers the other day getting the annoying bits of grey hair restored to their former colour, I popped into a shop after and noticed how cheap home dye kits were by comparison. Without wishing to 'out' any hairdressers or chemical engineers on here is there a big difference between the two? I know in a salon you're paying for the hairdressers time, overheads etc. Ms

I always have mine done by a professional, only last time she was on holiday and i couldnt wait so did it myself. Much easier than it used to be but the colour soon faded to what it was before. Where as the hairdresser puts a permanent on and it doesnt fade at all just needs doing each time to cover the roots

I do mine myself... It lasts till it grows out to be fair... It's easy to do and takes me about 45mins..

If you go to sally's (not sure if you have that there, but there is bound to be something similar) you can but the products that the hairdressers use

I use home hair dyes to cover me grey hairs, the cover isn't brilliant as a slightly lighter shade over the grey hairs but there is no way I would nor could pay what they charge in salons

They are pretty easy to use just watch out you can mess up towels, ie dont get it everywhere

Do do the skin test as kits very on what they use.

I always do my hair colour at home because it's easy and so much less expensive.

Use old towels and as someone already said, do a skin test with the product first.

Thanks for the advice ladies. I'm going to try a home kit next as tbh I felt that what the hairdressers charged was a lot in comparison to the home kits as I've only got a bit of grey (unlucky for me it's right at the front - thanks for that dad and for the nose!!) Ms

I always go to the hairdressers. I have curly hair and I don't want my hair to frizz by putting chemicals on it and I need the professionals to sort it for me. I have my hair dyed to retain my natural hair colouring, obviously covering the grey which is why I have it dyed

Dont forget to do skin text , I have been using home kits for years no problems and thought I would try 1 of new foam ones. Didnt do the skin test and ended up with some nasty burns right on top of my head .

I have been paying the hairdresser to do it as the dyes are supposed to be kinder to the hair, but like box dyes on my hair...the dye fades out before the roots show through so I end up looking like I have red hair which I really don't suit.

I think I will be going back to the one dye in a box that doesn't fade on my hair, which is seven pounds...cheaper than the 44 for a full head that I pay at the hairdressers with roots at 22.

I think you need a card to buy professional products from Sally's

I have one but had to show a copy of all my qualifications before one was issued.

I'm sat here with dye on my hair as I type and I swear to god i'm going to start going to a salon after this.

I've always done mine myself but the greys are just too much to keep up with now It's so much hassle, especially as it's purple. I just KNOW i'm going to end up with a purple splodge somewhere I didn't want one

I've been doing my own for years too, but these days the grey comes back far too quickly... just can't justify what they charge at salons though

... I popped in to get my hair straightened on Thursday for a meet... £20 and not even a trim!

I do my own too. I'm pretty much grey and have been since I was mid 20s. My hairdresser is a doll though and she told me all the stuff I needed to buy from Sally's and I just mix my own and paint my roots. Takes about 45 minutes and saves me a small fortune! Well worth it. I still go up to my hairdresser every so often to get my hair chopped but it cost about £90 and I couldn't spend that every six weeks. Now it costs me about a tenner. Winner!

You need a card to get the discount hairdresser prices but anyone can shop there.

There are plenty of freelance hairdresser's out there... like myself who will charge you less than salons, and in the comfort of your own home

I think it depends what colour you go.

I used to home dye my hair black for YEARS, but it was only a couple of shades darker than my natural hair colour.

I think if you are going to completely different colour or bleaching it, you should go to a professional.

If you have a bad reaction to the product they should know what to do.

I went red yesterday for the first time which involved going much lighter first & I had it done professionally just to be on the safe side.

Although at the moment Mrs R has hers done at home (by Mr R!) I don't think it is all about colour. There is the added bonus of that trip out to be pampered for a couple of hours and to have a gossip (in a nice way) with others there.

Her usual hairdressers even buys lunch for the ladies booked in when they send out to get their own lunch! May only be £2 for a baguette, but a nice gesture.

Nah! If you can afford it, go to the hairdressers and enjoy!

no matter

I used dia colour from sally's for years always left my hair in good condition. I have now gone white in front so have decided its easier just to leave it to go natural. Its taking sooo long to grow out. cos i have long hair.recon it will be another twelve months till im colour free.

Always at the hairdressers.

If I let my grey come through it would resemble the colour of a brillo pad. Not a good look

thankyou for that, so many just look at the cost they don't see how we try to make it a fully enjoyable experience for the client

i'm feelance and i'm sure many look at my prices and think i must be loaded and all i can say to that is i bloody wish that was the case

once you take away my expenses as in stock, rent, sundries and tax my take out of it is not that great it really is a job i do for love not money it would make so much more sense to have a career change but i live in hope that one day i will be fully booked all day every day and finally be able to make enough not to worry on the months where it goes dead, i have lost an awful lot of sleep since i went freelance worrying if i will keep my head above water since this recession hit, so please do not look at how much you pay and think that hairdressers must be loaded cause that certainly isn't the case sadly

as for home colour there is a place for it and i fully understand why people do when you compare cost and some are excellent these days but the down side to it can be that they are not as good on coverage as profesional also when you apply getting an even coverage is not as easy as it is for your hairdresser to achieve, with home colour you get colour build up which results in colour banding, thats not in every case but in most cases. also those that have blondes will never achieve as good a result with home colour as a salon can achieve, a lot of my colour work isn't just a full head colour it has other colours wiorked into it in foiling techniques which you could never achieve with a home colour

i have clients that were honest with me and said they couldn't afford to come for colour anymore so i taught another family member of theirs how to apply it properly and recomended what to use and at least they still come to me for their cuts even if not as often as they used to

i rent a chair in a genuinely stunning salon that is very unique and work with an amazing bunch of people that makes for a lovely atmosphere and we have been open for just over a year now and getting new clients every week so fingers crosssed one day i will be nice and busy and those that are doing home colours will eventually be able to afford to get me to do it again for them
