It's one day, I get it's an inconvenience but it's merely that. I would imagine if you're in the service industry like previously mentioned you'll receive an enhanced rate of pay, and if you had been likely to be placed on a Rota to work you could have made arrangements sooner (e.g can you get a lift from colleagues, budget for a taxi etc).

Seeside I do love your forum posts but on this occasion I think you are wrong.

Bus drivers should be entitled to have a day or two off work for Christmas to spend time with their families. The pay isn't that good and they already work weird shifts all year round.

No bus service isn't a new thing that's just been introduced, it has happened around my area for as long as I can remember.

If you know you have no transport when the buses aren't running over the festive period then either plan another way to get to work or tell your employer you can't work.

Sorry Seaside, you knew you were working over the festive period right? I'm retired and know they've been banging on about scheduled transport work over Christmas for months. Didn't you think to plan ahead, putting a £1 a week aside for taxi/arranging with a colleague/finding out if your employer would cover travel costs/book annual leave.

Transport workers have families too. I get your peeved but the onus was on you to plan your journey.

I have a bicycle so I don't have to rely on public transport.

It is a pain in the arse when it's raining and cold and dark - or I just simply can't be arsed!

But it's much quicker than walking and saves me a fortune.

I push the bike uphill mostly

"OP, I had to work Christmas Day one time and take taxis to and from my workplace, but my employer agreed in advance to pay my fares. Have you asked?

That's Verry unlikely with this company.

Is there a reason you can't get a taxi?

Onley that it will cost mor than wot i will arn on the day witch wood seem a bit pointless going to work in the 1st place

"

Then you will have to explain to your employer you've made no arrangements and are unable to work.

Been in a similar situation myself but knew there was always a slim chance I could be called into work on a day where there would be no public transport. So for a couple of months before I saved a couple of pound aside each week while trying to arrange car/taxi shares.

While I appreciate you didn't know till a week before that you were on the rota surely you knew your workplace was open and there may be a possibility you'd be asked to work? And since Christmas is on the same day each year unless this is a job you started in the last couple of weeks you've had time to prepare for this or tell your boss you can't work as you have no means of transport.

Point is bus drivers have families and children etc .. if you knew your working when there off, you maybe could of planned before hand and put some money aside so you had money there to get a taxi to work, or told your employer you've got no way of getting and asked them to pay for it

Yeah it sucks, but honestly you needed to plan in advance on this one. If you don't have transport then you need to book the day off as holiday.

Perhaps look at saving up for a little 50cc moped or something so that you have your own transport.

As a footnote, _eesides spelling is beautiful. It's phonetically perfect and as a fellow dyslexic i find it easier to read than 80% of the posts on here. It's incredibly logical, i'll be petitioning Her Majesty to adopt some of it when i see her next, as it would be far easier for foreigners to learn and therefore good for trade.

I found it hard when my gran was in hospital over Christmas and new year in 2015, she was dying and I wanted to visit as often as possible. But Christmas day and New years day, perhaps the days when visits are needed most, no public transport. I took taxis and the ward was so quiet. I get that drivers need time off too but I really feel hospital services should always run. Not just for visitors but staff too? Surely enough drivers that arent into Christmas willing to work those days for extra pay

Ask around at work for a lift as other people do. Bus drivers etc deserve a day off too! You're lucky, we have none Boxing Day either.

When you take a job and can't drive you have to consider what will you do if there's no public transport. I've often had to walk to work when buses have stopped because of snow

I understand your point however nowadays virtually all services are commercially run, no subsidy in other words, and the number of people like yourself would not justify running at what could be a substantial loss. It's a sad fact of life nowadays alas but also as many others have said I am entitled to a day off as well

Coming into this at this late stage, can I offer some advice on all aspects?

I know that Seeside works as a Chef, a role which at this time of year is one really hard SLOG! The working hours will likely be long and tough but for many in the Catering profession, Xmas will be just another day, without overtime or special bonuses and for the run up to and including the Festive period, time off will be limited. Catch up time off will be in January!

One poster mooted the point that didn't pubs, hotels etc supply or pay late night transport home?

From my experience in Hotels & Catering, that does exist, but it is rare. Staff at all levels have to fend for themselves transport wise at many locations. If staff are lucky to get a share of the tips ( again, a rarity) these will appear via payroll a week or a month later.

For many Catering staff, it is sadly a case if planning other means of getting to & from work at this time of year, when many Catering and Hotel businesses ban Holiday Leave. It's basically standard throughout this Industry!

Transport wise, as a lot of services these days only run with Subsidies from local and regional councils, specific times of year such as Xmas, New Year and Easter are "no go" areas. Add in Union pressures of additional pay for anti social hours and it becomes non viable financially for many of today's big transport operators, hence why buses and trains don't run at this time of year.

Lastly, for us regulars on here, we know Seeside does have a Dyslexic issue, but we work round that abd if you take just a little time, his posts are quite easily read.

For some dyslexics, even the use of a spell checker can be difficult; it's not as easy to use as some have made it out to be. I find it a bit sad and astonishing that his detractors, when shown the errors of their posts haven't had the temerity to at least apologise!

Dyslexia is a Disability for many! If that is how you approach Disability, you should be ashamed!

Merry Christmas Seeside, WE regulars love you!

It's very unlikely the companies are willing to pay. They are not charities and they probably wouldn't even be able to cover their costs let alone make a profit.

But I use a spell checker and that picks up most mistakes and, while not always completely correct, makes most of my posts understandable. I'm not saying this to have a go at you but I find a your posts quite difficult to read, get an on-line spell checker and you'll improve your posts no end.

It doesn’t help him his ad his dyslexia is very severe so he struggles to determine between the suggested words a spell checker gives which one he needs

As a dyslexic myself I find his post easily to read as they’re spelt phonetically

His posts are incredibly easy to read, beautiful phonetics and none of those bullshit silent letters and other rubbish we have in english. I lived in berkshire for a year before i realised how it was meant to be pronounced "

"Coming into this at this late stage, can I offer some advice on all aspects?

"

Thanks and well sed

But I've just found out Thar is no survive on new years day eather.

I'm working new years day and now haf to take a 10- ish mile walk to get to work

Y must everything stop on Christmas and new year ? not everyone wants to stay in or get d*unk !

I hate this time of year wen everything stops and almost forces people to stay in if you don't drive and have a car

Hoo els is haveing a hard time cos survive,s and shops shut and stop on Christmas and new year,s day and leeve you standard or with a very long walk ?"

Around here its generally well known that theres no public transport on Christmas Day and New Years Day so when you took on your job you should have taken into consideration. From your previous posts i presume that you dont have a permanant contract in a set workplace but fill in where needed so maybe you should tell them you cant work those days. Even if you have a permenant workplace you could have told them you cant get to work if theres no public transport.

Bus drivers etc all deserve time off anyway.

As for shops being closed, well i think its easy to survive without shopping on Christmas Day. Just make sure you have enough food to last a day !

Maybe ask if anyone can give you a lift there and back ... or simply tell them you cant work.

Iv often worked Christmas Day aswell as other holidays and before i could drive i walked long distances to and from work. I changed jobs because i no longer wanted to work holidays and weekends.

I do have sympathy for you but i also think bus drivers, shop workers etc deserve a day off.

I love the way people are sticking up for bus drivers having Christmas and New years day off.

There are loads of people that have to work public holidays, many don't get the option to take them off, don't they deserve the time with their families too?

People want to go to the pub for a drink, a restaurant for a meal, petrol stations for petrol/ flowers etc, they expect police/ fire brigade/ ambulances to come running at the drop of a hat but bus drivers should have the day off...

Op I am having a similar issue - want to go to football tommorow afternoon - no national trains so flying to Manchester. So up about 6, at bus stop for 7, then bus to airport then flight to Manchester getting in about 11, then tram to central Manchester drop off kit, then tram back to game all before 3pm

Madness yes. Sometimes business have to realise that it is a nightmare for staff to get to places is they rely on trains or an early bus. In London first tube is 7.30. No sure what the first bus’ are outside of the capital but I guess, managers should see if they can arrange someone to pick you up or a taxi.

I hope you get sorted OP

The thing is when you take a job as a nurse, police officer, carer, chef etc you are aware that you may be required to work christmas/New year and you take steps to ensure that you can travel if you do work. The OP would know that it's possible he could be scheduled to work, there's no point taking such a job and then moaning that you can't get there and back! Plenty of others have to work and are able to plan efficently.

Because they are the only people who use the buses are they? Not the people trying to get in to work to earn an honest living?

Yes perhaps this was a naive rant but aren't we all allowed one of those from time to time. It has inconvenienced someone going into work on the days that the buses aren't running, it's annoying. So for a brief moment in time the op wanted to vent. He even came up with am alternative plan of walking in to work despite the distance from his home.

Have you never had a selfish rant in your lifetime? I'd wager you have.

I often work Christmas, in fact I am working tonight.

On weekends and bank holidays I drive to work, I also get well remunerated for doing so.

No complaints from me but a lot of people that do work are losing any financial benifit from having to use a taxi.

Funny you say that, one of the local buses routes starts and terminates at the local station.

In the evening there are only a couple of buses an hour, yet they are scheduled to leave the station 5 minutes before the train gets in...

So yes I see empty buses leave a busy train station every day...
