We’ve got our 8 year nephew today, tomorrow and Boxing Day because both the brother and sister-in-law are police and are on duty!

Their Christmas will be flying visits here in between shifts to see the Boy!

The emergency services are vital to us and are appreciated in the most part but the sacrifice is much bigger than most of us generally consider.

Keep up the Stirling work guys and gals and have a very merry Xmas and a brilliant new year

Thanks to everyone that has to work over the Christmas period.

Retail workers ready with the bottle of milk or jar of cranberry sauce we forgot.

Pharmacists waiting to fill the emergency prescriptions the Dr on duty has written.

Health care assistants making sure beds are changed and wards run smoothly.

Prison officers liking after the parts of society everyone liked to forget about, often dealing with threatening and violent behaviour day in day out.

Police men trying to make sure everyone gets home safe by checking for drink drivers a d often having to deal with heartbroken families and victims of crime.

Nurses and Dr's run off their feet dealing with poorly people whether self inflicted or not.

Call centre workers answering the calls of thousands of people and answering their queries whilst longing for their turkey dinner.

Beautiful East Yorkshire

We are both off together tomorrow and able to enjoy our first Christmas Day as a family for several years! Usually one of us has to work, both in different services so it gets extremely hard, this year the pay off is that I’m nights New Year’s Eve and red is working New Year’s Day!

Thank you all for the appreciation of the services (weather emergency or not) we love you all!

Merry Christmas!

Pretty sure ALL of those qualify as retail workers?

On the plus side, at least some police forces give their staff triple pay plus TOIL for working Christmas day... (as some NHS trusts used to...) several of my police friends volunteer to work Christmas day every year because the deal is so good, and my Mum always used to work at the hospital.

One stop and petrol station fall under retail workers

But I take your point on the others!

Sadly though for a lot of workers it's just part of their required hours and so get no bonuses or extra TOIL.

Although a small part of me thinks they knew the gig when they signed their contract it still isn't nice being away from your family on Christmas day.

Today I took 2 big boxes of chocolates and a Christmas card around to our local police station, to keep those on duty full and let them know that we are grateful for all the hard work that they and their colleagues around the UK do on our behalf.

I have done it for the last 3 or 4 years and they always seem so appreciative that someone has taken the time to say thank you.

And it makes me feel all warm and fluffy inside

Lets not forget those standing on the watchtower in the armed forces standing watch over us while even the emergency services sleep. There are still planes on standby, subs on patrol and servicemen standing watch around the world although no wars are on!

We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to deliver justice upon those who would do us harm.

I work in security and I’m working over Christmas. However I will not be as stretched as the uniformed services such as police, nhs, staff and fire service. Or be hundreds of miles away from loved ones like some of our armed forces. To you all I raise a glass (or coffee cup this year) and salute your tireless dedication to keeping us safe, secure and healthy. Merry Christmas and massive thank you ??

Or dealing with violent offenders like those in the prison and youth offender service.... The often forgotten service.... They don't close prisons for Christmas lol

Christmas day is like any bank holiday which is paid the same as a Sunday - time and two thirds. If Christmas is on a Saturday then the Christmas pay is awarded for the Monday. NHS or a tight trust?

I do this too. And to the fire and ambulance station.

They always seem touched to be thought of.
