Are you a tinkerer?

'Cos it seems i am..been having a ponder about my year in tinkering terms

I've re decorated about half of the house this year, bathroom, landing, hallway, stairs, one bedroom and so far half the living room, I've worked out how to stick French drains in the garden and taught myself a couple of things in the process, re felted the sheds and put new roof beams in one of them. Put a new gate (which i built myself) with concrete ramp into the garden, laid a new stone path too. I worked out how to diagnose a problem on my car so circumnavigated the need to have a diagnostic at the garage and figured a little bit about car stereo installation when I successfully fitted my own new headunit, speakers amp and sub (need to run new cables next!) Completely reverse engineered a shower room in the house too so taught myself a little bit about plumbing and electrics in the proscess, capping pipes and chasing electric power cables back to the fuse box and disconnecting etc..all fairly interesting stuff but now i need to teach myself how to plaster walls!

Stripped and rebuilt a chainsaw so know a couple of new things about them too now

I love to tinker like this, forever fixing or making or poking about inside things or taking them apart just to put back together.

How about you? you a tinkerer or a leaver to someone elser and if you are..what you been up to?

I used to get into trouble at work sometimes for “tinkering” id play about with the machinery it it broke down, worked on the same piece of kit for almost 5 years.

I got better at fixing it and setting it up than the engineers

Also took apart a Michael kors watch last night just to see what was inside it

Other than car audio, I leave electrics well alone

Fuck that, would rather pay someone to do the job properly than even attempt to do anything like that.

It’s a bit mad as I’m a property developer but I have zero interest in doing it myself

I don’t do know tinkering. I can barely get myself to take the laces out of my footwear to sort it out. The thought of it paralyses me. A bit too daunting lol

But, on a serious note. Sometimes I like a little fiddle with stuff that I think I can sort.

I have a cheat in that a good friend of mine is a bone fide spark with testing certs so he has a sneaky peek at stuff I've done before i hide it away again. So far though so good

I wouldn't go attempting any large install...yet

Basically a pipe buried in gravel that runs water away from an area you want to run water away from

Awe see that was my dad..always at something but he wanted it done yesterday and ended up in a mood and busting something or leaving something done half arsed. I quite like the process, it's like practical learning! Saves soooo much cash too not paying trades and stuff and you feel like you've done something for yourself to boot

This is what I do. I tend to just make things worse. I still have a go though.

Sounds familiar! Almost all my work is in spring and summer so the colder months I have to do as I please and my sleeping pattern goes weird, it's not un heard of that I'll be bored and start taking wallpaper down or painting at midnight or something daft. I don't mind that though, I like doing what I want when I fancy doing it

Not too much this year: redecorated the hallway, gitted a bew bathroom suite, rendered the wall in my garden, built decking and wooden planters, outdoor storage unit, helped fix the drainage pipes.

Nothing major but all new things for me apart from the decorating

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

There are many things that you can do yourself, plastering ain't one..

Save yourself the heartbreak and mess and pay a plasterer a few hundred quid to do it properly first time.

I'll have to fail at it first! And the old man used to be a plaster many many moons ago and has left me his tools (amongst many others) so it would be a shame to not try given the kit is right here..when and if it all goes to shit and ends up as a lump of plaster on the floor, I'll let someone do it

Worthing

I work in I.T. and always have some kit of the go. Motherboards, cpus, cases, o/s, self-builds. All good fun and keeps the brain matter ticking over.

That's an area where i tend to fall down, give me hammers and spanners and such..I can be a bit clumsy with the finer electronics and computers and things like that
