Headaches and periods

East Yorkshire

I’ve been ill all day and lounging around in bed with a headache. Now I’ve connected that I started my period this morning and it seems to be a recurring theme that I get headaches at the same time every month.

I can’t take painkillers as they give me a hangover so I’m just left to sit it out. I don’t know when it started or maybe I just never noticed the connection until the last few months.

Anyone else suffer with this? Any suggestions?

Yes, I've been getting migraines with my periods every month since my youngest was born 14 years ago

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplements and chamomile tea for the headaches (this is what works for me).

Raspberry cane tea and ginger tea are brilliant for period ills too.

I'be found that not getting enough sleep and/or not keeping my blood sugar level with regular snacks/meals makes the migraines worse.

alpha centauri

After I had my first child I started to get migraines at the start and end of my period, it's because of those damn fluctuating hormones

Are these ok for kids lovely?

My 12 year old has just started her periods and is getting bad headaches with them. Not something I’ve suffered from so not sure how to help! X

Thank you I’ll go get some. Would you take the supplements month round or just on the days with headaches?

Tea can make you wee a lot. You could be dehydrated.

The teas, most certainly. I’d prefer you both to check the CoQ10 out with GP... whilst I don’t think it would be an issue, I’m certainly not qualified to say for sure, and certainly don’t know if there would be factors associated with age to consider.

I take them ongoing.

Please always check with GP whether they’d have any concern with you including direct supplements.

CoQ10 is found in these foods too:

Soybean oil

Canola oil

Chicken

Herring

Mackerel

Beef

Roasted peanuts, sesame seeds, pistachio nuts

Broccoli

Cauliflower

Orange

Strawberries

Boiled egg

Fabville

I never used to get migraines, but have done so over the last six months. I think they might be related to my cycle, and may indicate my perimenopause.

I now use Sumatriptan, with great effect
