I just watched this. What an amazing story. Massive respect to Desmond Doss. An absolute hero. It really makes you think.

What other truly great movies have people watched that stood out?

Hacksaw ridge is the best I’ve seen for quite a while.

It shouldn’t work with vince Vaughn but it bloody does!

Dunkirk is next on the list as I heard just great things about it. But I would have to agree that for 2017 it's going to be hard to beat it.

Read the story of Desmond Doss it's better than the film they left a lot of his heroics out as they didn't think audiences would believe it. The guy was truly remarkable.

Have a look at kilo two bravo kajaki the true story. It's a lower budget movie about Brits trying to rescue their own. It's really good but obviously doesn't have sfx of the Hollywood movies

Yeah I’ve read it too but I think if they’d have put everything in, the audience may not have believed it, like when he gave up his stretcher for another soldier who was wounded, people may have thought it’s gone a bit too far but he actually did do this.

13 hours, the secret soldiers of Benghazi. Brilliant, backs to the wall type story based on the story of the attack on American ambassador Chris Stevens at the consulate in Libya, and subsequent attempt to extract the remaining staff from the country.

I too, loved Hacksaw Ridge. I've since followed it up with reading the various materials about Pvt Doss. What an incredible young man, to act so selflessly in that situation blows the mind.

I was disappointed with Dunkirk but I guess it's hard to convey what happened on that iconic moment from history.

I think you need to not look at it as a war film and look at it for how important it was.

Interested in seeing hacksaw ridge myself

I too was disappointed with Dunkirk, I think it had the wrong director in Chris Nolan. Having watched many a historical program with archive footage from that time, the sheer terror that the soldiers faced wasn't really conveyed well by the movie. I feel a bit more story could have been told about how nearly half a million soldiers were driven there by the German army and Luftwaffe.

Thought Dunkirk was awful. Did not in my opinion portray what happened. Total waste of money.

Its a great film, I'm not religious in the slightest but you have to respect the man for standing by his beliefs despite the ridicule and grief he got.

My favourite war films are Apocalypse Now, The Thin Red Line, Schindlers List and Kellys Heroes. The Band Of Brothers series is amazing too.

A film I watched recently, not war related, that I thought was decent was Split. I thought James McAvoy's performance was quality.

Somewhere In The Ether…

For a rousing slice of American Civil War action, nothing beats Glory starring Mathew Broderick and the always superb, Denzel Washington. A true story and a very sad end but never less than gripping throughout
