Judy back in from my Christmas party held at a local hotel.

Was a lovely night marred slightly by the fact they had no running water and didn't have any since 10am this morning!

We didn't find this out until one of the group went to go to the loo. They were advised to inform reception when they had finished who would pop along with a bucket of water

Now I work in health and safety and they shall be receiving a strongly worded complaint when I get to work on Monday. I even emailed them today to confirm a few things and not once did they mention the lack of water!

We had a good night other than that but for me, lack of welfare facilities and no forward planning by management (they didn't even provide hand sanitiser for after you were brace enough to go to the loo!) is to me quite appalling customer service, don't you think?

Guessing this was Tewkesbury.....which has been without running water since Friday morning at 3am.......should a hotel shut down completely and turn away business that had already been booked months in advance, especially given that fact that all other businesses in the same area were/are affected? They continued to cope with the processing of your meal despite no running water, so if the only thing that was not up to scratch this evening was the fact that there was no water for the loos , then I think you should let them have the fair crack of the whip to explain.....

Same thing happened down the road in Chelt last month. Took about 12 hours until they had a temporary fix in place.

I have a loo available - 50p a go

Continuing to process their meal without running water is illegal and they should not have opened. Environmental health would not be happy at all if they found out!

Wasn't Tewkesbury but it was close abd the fact it has been off for so long and they failed to put on place any contingency measures actually makes the situation worse! There were lots of things they could have done. Hot bowsers in from the water company, gone to Tesco and bought up all their bottled water, hired portal ops (at least they would have had hand sanitizer in them!)

Pretty sure the welfare regs would say that they have to have running water and adequate sanitation facilities. They also, under licensing laws, have to provide water as a drink option to prevent binge drinking.

And what about guests staying over at the hotel? Not being able to flush the loo in their room. As for food prep... How could they have followed food hygiene protocol if there was no water for them to wash their hands?

Yes, not cancelling the evening was good in a sense but not informing your guests of the issue from the outset is poor customer service. As I said, I had been in contact with them during the day and not once did they mention the issue.

I think it probably is

But look at it from the venue's point of view

They have hundreds booked in for a Christmas party. If they cancel at the 11th hour, they would have had a war on their hands

Maybe they had been told the water would be back on for evening service? You dont know what was going on behind the scenes

Either way, they were stuck between a rock and a hard place

But had time to prepare contingencies once they decided not to cancel. That's my big issue here. Nothing was seemingly considered as to how to bring some water to their guests. Or basic hygiene items such as hand sanitizer for the bathrooms.

I work in what is essentially a massive hotel and if our water supply is off for a significant period of time or is likely to be we dispatch a lorry to pick up bottled water to hand out.

Except that stopped after a while as the evening got into full swing a d staff were serving food (how did they wash their hands after standing over toilets swilling down other people's effluent?) and people's piss and shit was piling up in the toilet

If your house was without water for a significant period of time would you be so understanding?

We did complain to the lady in reception. No compensation process was offered and the only explanation we were given was 'it's management decision'.

We did continue with the meal because to be honest at the time the thought of food prep had not crossed our minds. It was only when dad's taxis came at the end of the night and we discussed it did we realise the further implications.

Our drinking habits were affected because after using the toilet once there was no chance I was doing it again so (seeing as money is king to a lot of posters here) their revenue for the evening was affected.

If any of their guests were to fall ill now they would be hard pressed to defend themselves.

Yes. I don't think that is in question. Doesn't mean they cantor won't fall ill through the decision of management not to make provision for a service they knew they would be without.

We had a good night other than that but for me, lack of welfare facilities and no forward planning by management (they didn't even provide hand sanitiser for after you were brace enough to go to the loo!) is to me quite appalling customer service, don't you think? "

I agree it’s not great, however, we are lucky that we rarely have issues with supply of basic services and unfortunately when those services are disrupted we as a nation generally haven’t a plan.

Popping along to flush for you is a gesture which allows you to continue your festive celebrations. The lack of sanitiser I’d say would have been easily remedied but possibly focus was on providing guests with their meals etc in a safe and hygienic manner. Water bowsers supplying the kitchen or even bottled water may have been used possibly for hand washing we don’t know. If the whole of Tewkesbury was similarly without water supply then I imagine back up services would be similarly stretched.

When you write your letter.... at work... don’t forget to thank the team for delivering “a good night” under difficult and stressful circumstances and in such a manner that allowed their guests to enjoy their planned evening without harm.

Next write, at work.... , to Severn Trent water and ask why their pipe broke? What measures did they have in place to ensure a continued supply of fresh water for their customers?, did they realise how it may inconvenience you and lead to your hotel operating in a blurry area potentially, for the sake of their guests, contravening statutory requirements?.... and tell them how your hotel poured water into your toilets to flush them so that you could enjoy your night. ... let us know your replies from both please!

As it was a work Christmas party the admin for it shall be done for it at work... Not quite sure why you have taken issue with that really.

I will always give praise where praise is due but I shall also require that my basic entitlements under law are exercised... Again, not quite sure why there is such an issue there either.

I'm not looking for refunds or anything really but I am astounded that so many of you think it fine for an establishment open to the public not to be questioned over such things.

They offered to flush the toilet with a bucket once in my experience. There were over 100 people at the party night. By the time I went to the loo they were not in a pretty state.

Yes we stayed at the venue because we were part way through the evening before we were made aware of the situation despite the water being off for the majority of the day. I had contacted them (yes, at work) during the day and they failed to alert me to the issue.

Emergency situations happen, I understand this but after a certain length of time it stops being an emergency and contingencies should be put in place. Severn trento are also culpable here as they should have provided bowsers etc to businesses with residential guests once the knew the severity of the issue.

I actually agree with you, OP - not having running water is about a lack of basic hygiene, not just in the loos but also in the area of food preparation.

You are not complaining about trivia like the decorations not being up too scratch or that it was a bit hot or cold or the music was too loud or not to your taste - you are not happy with basic hygiene not being available. The place should have closed to the public as this was a risk to public health.

You are not being oversensitive and management should have advised you and closed until services are restored. Public areas such as schools would be closed in circumstances like this.

They are leaving themselves open to legal action. I am surprised they did what they did, even with the most noble intentions.

"Shouldn't have opened.

“..... and they ruined our Christmas party”

Exactly

The venue was fucked if it did, and fucked if it didn't

Shit happens

Especially when we've had ridiculously cold temperatures, days before Christmas

Sometimes we have to just suck it up"

It’s nice though in this season of goodwill that the OP feels they should drop the hotel a line. Maybe it’s the same hotel from the veris where the staff would have to clean up a “very wet bed”?

In my experience utilities are not the most forthcoming regarding when normal service will resume, sometimes providing updates which are inaccurate, sometimes providing little or no information. The hotel did what it could, has as been mentioned previously if the hotel had cancelled there would have been uproar, “ruined our Christmas party etc. That didn’t happen so we’ll never know whether the OP would have been on taking issue with that. Sending a strongly worded mail will benefit no-one.

You seem to have taken this rather personally.... So much so you had to search through my verifications to find something to have a dig at me about. Can't imagine why that is.

You may be happy to accept poor customer service. I am not.

"Pretty sure it's illegal for a business like thatbo operate without running water, just for hygiene reasons..

The lorry you dispatch, to my knowledge, isn’t normally a resource a hotel has waiting for such an emergency. When the water supply is off why send for bottled water? You’d be shut surely due to the lack of basic hygiene requirements? From your experience you evidence nothing to ensure a continued supply of fresh running water.

No... It's a contingency until the supply is working again. That's what a contingency plan is.... Something to put in place when an emergency situation happens outside of your control.

The hotel shouldn't have continued to serve food without the adequate facilities.

Had that taken the decision to cancel the party they would have been able to claim on the business insurance for business interruption cussed by failure of public utility supply. And this would also cover revenue lost from the evening bar takings.

But hopefully nobody from the evening will be ill etc and with the strongly worded email you will receive some form of compensation.

Ok .... ok .... now stop before you get really ridiculous! I have no idea the relevance of your rabbit hole comment but the rest is nonesense.

Write your letter, use your strong words, i’m Sure after a busy and hard weekend they’ll enjoy that. When you regale your friends over Christmas at the strength of your words and how you showed your power, just remember, once there was an inn that had no rooms.... the proprietor supplied the best he could!

Precisely this! We live in a world where we simply must apportion blame and get some kind of recompense for having our lives slightly inconvenienced briefly..

This suing and compensation culture can fuck right off.

Folk so far up their own backside that they need paying for being inconvenienced a bit

You see it a lot though, everyone looks to everyone else to sort their problems or to blame for them

I expect a good service/venue if I'm paying for it. And as we know Christmas events are inflated prices.

I would expect some form of apology may reduction in my bill for not providing the venue as I would expect.
