So there's talk of these models losing their income from being an F1 grid girl. Do you think its a progressive move away from patriarchal traditions? Or a sad end to female involvement in the sport?

Just another move by Chase Carey and his cronies to attempt to turn F1 into INDY/NASCAR?

I'm really pleased.

I find it pretty offputting and degrading when the grid girls come on the telly. And I know a F1 mechanic who says that she always feels like she's not taken very seriously because you mostly see women at F1 being used for their T&A.

So hopefully this will very much encourage more women into the sport at all levels, because they won't feel like they're only there as decoration.

Exactly! They should all play beach volleyball

I can see why in this day and age that the models are being removed from sports, but it's got to be getting harder and harder to get a break and be taken seriously in the modelling industry, between this and instagram, there are a billion pretty girls, just turning into faces in a crowd.

Only if they take them away from boxing and wrestling matches too

I think the recent fiasco with ATP tennis was enough to shame face the sport

One of my very good (female) friends is in the pit crew for McLaren & before that was at Ferrari in a similar role. There are a surprisingly high number of women who actually work in the F1 paddock, covering a range of different roles & from what my friend tells me, there’s surprisingly very little sexism as they are all well respected in their fields. It’s not really a job you can get away with going if you aren’t totally focussed & know your stuff.

As they all travel to the same destinations, it’s a fairly close community. The models are usually specific to the region, so aren’t considered to be a part of the F1 community in the same way. They’re certainly not involved in the sport, other than for decorative purposes so I’m not sure it really makes a practical difference.

That said, don’t see what harm they do either. Rich men have always attracted pretty women. It’s the way the world works!!

I have no objection to hot female models at sporting events, the issue could be easily solved by also having some fit blokes in tight trousers ( or better still lycra) at the events also XXX

It's not a 'ban', is it. It's an organisation deciding for themselves what they want to do.

If that happened eventually Darts and Boxing would follow by getting rid of walk on and ring girls.

Would it reach cheerleading eventually? I don't think so as it's inclusive but 99% Female.

I think that getting rid of models at all of the sporting events is an attempt by the patriarchy to force women to be housewives and mother's

Totally wrong to ban them .

They make their living from this kind of job .

I think it would be better to embrace them in the sport even more .

Perhaps topless in the warmer countries

I've seen a few outraged men on the internet claiming that they'll fuck off and find a different sport if F1 stop having grid girls.

Firstly, I don't think F1 will miss them - they're clearly not actually fans if they're just doing it to look at some women on TV.

Secondly, I wonder if these men have ever heard of porn? I mean if you want to look at women in revealing clothes, surely a ten second internet search would give you more material than catching a glimpse of them on telly once or twice a month...

I’m not sure it’s fair to say it’s ending female involvement in the sport. There are increasing numbers of women in high positions in the sport,- which is needed.

The sport should be full of people based on talent, irrespective of gender, but women should have exactly the same chance as men. There is no difference simply because of the M or F Tick Box on the application form.

As for grid girls. Well,- I’m for the promotional advertising, if that’s what they’re for, but gratuitous dressing of them, in less and less Lycra, is not exactly espousing equality

If it's about 'promotional advertising', wouldn't a person (male or female) in smart trousers and a branded polo shirt achieve the same thing while holding the grid number?

Yes. That’s exactly my point. I don’t mind the advertising on the grid, but it shouldn’t be based about sexualising one gender. Either could do it, dressed appropriately. I know sex sells, but it shouldn’t be so blatant and degrading. It’s clearly promotional models that are being paid to stand there, because they look good.

Not heard any news about pit lane girls relative to the OP.

No doubt the take offence, selective morals, live your life as we instruct & victim-hood brigade will be behind it somewhere.

As for the F1 girls, it's their life, it's their existence, so what they do, how they earn is up to them. At the present time I done believe they're doing anything illegal or illegitimate and neither are their employers so

They're probably models from that country, rather than full time "F1 girls".

'I don't know anything about this but I'll assume it's the PC gone mad brigade!'

In reality, no one is forcing F1 to do anything. It has nothing to do with things being illegal. F1 are reviewing how they want to present their product. That's it.

They are. Grid girls are usually sourced by the circuit management locally
