I can be chatting away quite happily and then one of those ludicrous pet names creep in and I wind up the conversation.

In most cases it says a lot about a man's attitude toward women;especially from a stranger.

I find it tolerable from people I know but for men on here to use them to formulate initial contacts smacks to me that they have very pre conceived ideas about the type of person they think women on here are.......

So ..... what's your take ?

I find all of those pet names incredibly patronising. It's bad enough when they are used in messages on here but the other day, at work, a client called me "duck" *shudder*

Its my real pet hate.. to get Babe, love your profile, would love to meet.

I accept that the younger lads do it often but I do actually say something... but I just tell them I am not their babe, honey, sweetie etc... and I would appreciate it if they didnt call me it.

It can really be the difference between meet or not...

Honestly no especially not in first message when they dont know me from Adam, must admit though once I have got to know people then yes normally hun is the 1 I tend to use the most .

I think we'll have to agree to disagree, I do believe it's offered in good nature, certainly not nastiness, just a term, almost of endearment.

Personally I don't tend to use terms as such, unless in response to a term used towards me.

Regional differences accepted. I am really asking about men who refer to any woman in this way with particular reference to introductory messages on this site.

It's possible that i recognise my own hypocrisy also. There are one , maybe two men on here I'd allow to call me what ever the fugg they liked.

I remember signing in fer membership of a club...the silly girl on hearing my name was David, then proceeded to pepper her sales pitch with Dave this and Dave that....until I corrected her....I found it overly familar..false ..and disrespectful...in different circumstances..I sometimes request they drop the formal use of my name, and use Dave..

I`m quite happy being called Dave, but when its appropriate..

Very, very, occasionally I get people who ask what I prefer...Dave or David....it then depends on the context...

I find pet names by strangers...immature...I`m no fuckers " hun "..I just ignore em...they`ll flock to others who don`t mind being patronised...

I tend to use "pet" or "my dear".

It's not so i don't have to remember names, its cos I often don't know names and yet I may talk to people in the chat room on a regualar basis and so tend to use pet names when I'm more familiar with them.

In my "real" life I do it too and I love it that my partner and close friends have "pet" names for me. Wolf calls me hunni, my best mate calls me Vix, another friend calls me Wenchy or Bint. I love them all!!

I get called Darling all the time, by my OH and also by my mother in law. If I was addressed by that name on here my first thought would be that it was a liitle 'over familiar' and to be called Darlin, without the g, makes me think of a Del boy kind of character.

But to be truly honest, pet names don't really bother me on here and I don't tend to take them too seriously. People are, on the whole, using those words as a friendly term and I don't mind what language they use. I don't tend to take the view that they are trying to patronise me, I assume its their figure of speech. Obviously at times you can tell its meant to be patronising, ie if my post is quoted on this thread with a 'thanks for that hunny bun!' I'd probably think 'git' at that point.

And if Bouncey ever messages me and forgets to put 'Treacle' then I'd be most offended

I only use someones name, I don't use any of those names you have mentioned or any not mentioned. I hate being called babe etc and in fact deleted a message yesterday from someone whom I have told several times what my name is but still uses it. Far too over familiar and more something young people use

The title words are a lot nicer to be called than the words some women like to be called on here Slut , bitch etc to mention a couple .

I would never use any of the above words in an opening message including those on the thread title.

But if there is a chemistry between 2 people these words only add to the play

I think unless you give a man or woman for that matter a name they can refer to you as they will often come up with a pet name that they think will endear you to them. If it is an issue tell them from the start or put it on your profile. Why moan after the fact when you could have quite easily prevented it happening in the first place.

I know if we appear to click, then a message will come across with their name attached, I`ve never asked....always felt it was rude or to forward...

There are countless ways of having initial contact without having a problem..communicating...
