So I'm off work injured and watching my fave tv programmes, one being "life below zero" people living a sustenance way of life off grid in Alaska and in the Arctic circle. I really find their way of life fascinating, not working for anyone but only for their own survival, Hunter gatherer style.

My question is would any of you like to live that way? Off grid, hunting and growing everything you need? No bills etc but on the flip side no emergency services?

Could you kill and gut an animal to eat? Build your own house? Live in isolation?

I fantasise about it but it will never happen.

Could I? Yes. Would I want to? No. I enjoy my creature comforts far too much

I'd love it OP I was watching 'Alaska - The final frontier' and it was fascinating.

These guys have electric and cars but it's how to survive and thrive in those conditions and making the most of every last thing you have

if i had to yes for survial but gutting an animal ( i can do a rabbit, chicken etc) would be a hard hard thing to do

I get that, I think though it could become easier to do, especially if it meant you getting to eat. One moose lasts one bloke 6 months!

A fox fur turned inside out makes a good warm hat. Before the anti fur people turn up, these people do this for survival not fashion.

Of course you'd need the right equipment and you'd need to have a clue as to what youbwsre doing it's always been something like to try for a very long time.

A fab commune would be even better lol

I love shooting, though I've never shot an animal I think I could but I would feel guilty but needs must if you live like that.

I do it sometimes with the military, it teaches you a lot about yourself and nature, but I still like to get back to civilisation and into a hot bath at endex!

It's in all of us, difference is we have become to accustomed to the privilege of our lifestyles.

But it's amazing how quick you let that go and hate the trappings of a normal life. I took off with just a backpack for a year through Central America. Shit myself at first, within a few weeks as long as I had my hammock the rest you can find if you want it.

That sounds amazing! I admit I do like camping and being closer to nature, sure some things I would miss but you would get used to it.

I'd always want to attempt this, like a bear grylls style go try and survive here.

Not Alaska but I always wanted to live in a croft on a Scottish island and live off the land with just wildlife for company. Too old to do that now but I still think about it.

I could kill anything. I was trained to kill.

I could kill anything from a rabbit to an elephant, to a human. Wouldn't bother me.

However I wouldn't kill a wild animal again, and I wouldn't kill them for their fur.

I watched them shows based in alaska and they all seemed like they were constantly in over their heads. I thought they could easily survive without killing so many wild animals, but that they want to live the life so do it and to hell with people telling them not to. Like the people digging up the area for gold. It's for survival.

We need to stop killing wild animals, and farm all our food.
