Somewhere In The Ether…

I always thought of them as more cumbersome versions of Siri

You speak and they reply.

You can say Alexa what is the weather today?

Or Alexa put on Radio 2 etc.

Think you can tell it to order stored things from your amazon account too.

Yes I see that on the adverts but as I can do that by visiting a website, what's the advantage?

What if it misinterprets what I say?

The Amazon Alexa is probably the best product of its nature on the market.

Basically you can use Alexa as a voice activated remote control for lots of things in your house. But they must be compatible or a compatible plug can allow you to switch things like lights on and off.

I have four echos.

Use them for music (Alexa play XXX) anything on Amazon prime music she will just play. Or radio stations too. Virtually any radio you can think of.

Use them to control my TV with a harmony hub too (Alexa turn on BBC 1. TV gets turned on. Bt box turned on. TV tuned to bt box and bt box turned to bbc1 all automatically).

Just brought some lights as well so can can control them as part of it.

So basically it's a remote control, albeit voice controlled, but can only be used on gadgets with the same name?

Sort of yes.

People develop apps for then (called skills) that allow them to do more too.

E.g. order take away. Check train times.

But I mostly use it for remote control type things. And music

Let me just add this as thought for all you peeps that use these types of devices. Most, if not all of us use mobile phones and computers at home nowdays. Both fully track everything you do and report that back to base, be it Apple, Microsoft, Android or whatever. If you are happy with that fine, but at least with all the above the devices are secured with regular OS security updates and in the case of mobile phones regular Firmware updates as well.

Now lets move on to your Beko fridge that talks to "Alexa" to let you know that you need more milk. Do any of you seriously believe Beko or any other fridge/appliance manufacturer will ever bother updating the software or Firmware on your appliance if and when a security issue crops up ? Off course they won't, because it costs £M's to do that.

All these appliances are live on your internal network, how long do you think it will be before hackers start using your fridge, freezer, kettle, coffee maker, central heating system, lights and so on to actually watch your keystrokes as you log into your bank account or credit card ?

It's a high powered microphone array that listens to every sound in your home and records it on expensive power sapping servers, to help increase global warming.

I have an Alexa. Its great. I use it mainly to play music/radio. It can also be used to control the heating and some lights which is great when im in a lot of pain and struggling with my mobility so cant get down and then back up 2 flights of stairs to put the heating on, i do it via Alexa.
