Beyond rational thought.

It could be argued that religion is the cause of many wars and conflicts, but today's Patriotism (for example Brexit and 'make America great again') is creeping in for reasons to argue with friends and family.

Which do you think you'll be arguing around the dinner table with your family over Christmas lunch?

Which do you think has people more passionately following their cause.

A world of my own

We won't be arguing round the table. In fact such topics are not likely to ever come up. We spend the time laughing. Telling cracker jokes and stuffing our faces.

Christmas is the time to escape all that for me.

Usually one of the few times everyone gets together and though not happy families all the time Christmas seems 'protected' which I'm glad about

Maybe it's the food and drink and the catch ups, the naff telly and post food/drink slumber.

Absolutely no arguments allowed on Crimble day. We will all be laughing at our ridiculous turkey hats and playing silly games. It's a day of fun and laughter. I won't even stress at loading the dishwasher.

No politics, no religion, just a happy carefree day.

There won’t be any arguments. Christmas Dinner is about the food, the crackers, the company and lots of laughter. Yes we tell the cracker jokes and wear the paper hats! We have a small secret Santa type gift at the table which is usually a humorous gift or small table game which we often play after we’ve eaten and we’re just too full to move, something that makes us laugh.

We do love a good political debate but not over Christmas.

It'd be pretty pointless arguing over brexit, what's done is done, can't change it. All of my family are on the same wave length when it comes to politics, so never really argue over it... But it's a different matter all together when the board games come out

My family always discusses politics over Christmas (and a little bit of religion). It's always been good natured.....but lately those conversations have gotten more and more adversarial. Thanksgiving was always more argumentative so such debates aren't undeard of.

I don't tend to be with my family (other than Marc) on Christmas or Thanksgiving since we've moved here, though. But the same debates are now making our family holidays rather uncomfortable

I've got a couple of family members who are vocal about what they're being brain washed with on the internet. So I blame that for the past few years of heated conversations. I just try to steer it to sports, at least there's some humour in the rivalry there.

Always forget to argue at Christmas, to busy having a nice day. Usually have friends over instead of extended family. Maybe that's where we're going wrong!

I agree with you Me Bee. I don’t do Religion; I’ve been there as a child and found them out. There’s no escape from politics, but the most divisive phenomenon recently is this rise in patriotism. You are born where you’re born, and you have no say in it. By all means enjoy where you live, but where you were born does not confer any superiority over anyone else, and trying to be more proud of where you were born than anyone else is such a childish mentality.

It's funny. I've never felt patriotic, im English, because my passport says so. Thats where it ends. As humans, we must feel we have to fight amongst ourselves, because we live somewhere.

Meli mentioned Monopoly earlier and that’s the one game that’s labelled ‘do not open until after 25th December’ in our house because we are all so competitive with that game (and I’m sure my son snaffles money on the sly)

I'm not sure how this one will go, it's the second since my dad died and last year was awful without him, then there's been some family fall outs this year over choices my mum has made since he died. It's a shame as we were always a close family and Christmas was always a warm happy time

Yeah, the holidays changed completely after my Dad died. My mother died this year and so I don't really think it'll ever be worth making the effort to go home for the holidays anymore. It's just not the same. It really shows you how much of the holidays are made up of the people around you.
