It can sometimes work, people do send them for differing reasons.

I'd suggest guys to always message though.

We use the wink to gauge interest . We wink , if we get one back we then write a message explaining a bit about ourselves and what we like , also asking about the people we were messaging.

We have written quite a few messages out to get no reply so thought this was best to try . If there is particular people we have everything in common with and want the same things as us we generally message as there is a much higher chance of reply .

If we send a wink it's to see if the attraction is mutual.

If we get a wink back, we'll then send the opening message.

If we receive no wink.. nobody has wasted time

I take it as a ‘hey, I liked your profile and want to start a conversation but don’t want to bug you so I’ll just wait here’ kind of thing, if I like them I’ll either message or wink back, if I don’t then I won’t, I do appreciate either a message or a wink equally as long as it’s clear they’ve read my profile and think they might be what I’m looking for, it’s the ones that haven’t and are phishing that annoy me but I simply put them on a block list so it’s not a problem
