Uber s the latest in a long line of companies to have had a data breach.

Equifax, Yahoo, Ashley Madison along with the Panama and Paradise papers to name but a few.

Can we trust online storage of data? We are starting to go back to storing important info off line.

Is offline any safer?

With new EU rules coming in from May next year, companies are going to have to be shit hot on their data security as breaches will mean big fines and huge reputation damage

Is a secure data centre less secure than a filing cabinet in an office? Probably not when you factor in physical access, fire prevention etc

But it is a cat and mouse game and these things will happen

In theory hard copydata protected information is stored securely in more than a lockable filing cabinet. Human error means people forget to secure this storage at the end of the day or leave stuff they're working on in a filing tray or put stuff in ordinary waste instead confidential waste etc. It's less likely that the information of a worlwide organisation will be in one office or storage unit though.

The amount of information stored virtually is what causes huge problems when data security is breached.

I doubt we'll ever go back to 100% hard copy recording of data though.
