Somewhere In The Ether…

And what a bunch of talentless nobodies the vast majority of them are - getting famous for playing video games for instance!

Fair play to them, getting paid for not going to work. Smart.

You mean people with good comedic timing and entertaining commentary? How dare people like them. There are a lot of youtubers who make content for young people and this involves them overreacting or playing it up too much. However, I would support any youtuber that creates consistently good content as well as editing all their work and uploading it over the vacant nobodies that become celebrities from shows like Geordie shore. At least these people have a genuine talent unlike 90% of people you see on the television

How is it any different to people on TV? You don't end up with 50 million subscribers without some talent for entertaining people.

This

Our daughter follows quite a few of them. She's gone to book signing, brought their products and looks forward to their new stuff.

If they can earn money and get known from it, good luck to them I say.

The worst thing is those "unboxing" videos on there, where they've bought a new toy/gadget or whatever and do a 45 minute or longer video of them taking it out of the box while waffling on about it.

Oh hell no!!

You can not paint them all with the same brush. There are some amazing content creators who deserve all the accolades they get. There is no way their content would get any chance on mainstream media. It's niche content and the studio executives wouldn't make any money from it.

Take a look at:

Hank Green - Scishow, Crash course, etc..

Lindsey Doe - Sexplanations.

Linus Sebastian - LinusTechTips.

Alex - Frenchguycooking.

Cody Reeder - City's Lab.

Darren Kitchen - Hak5.

Matt Parker - Standupmaths.

Emily Graslie - Brainscoop.

I can keep going if you like but that should keep you going for a bit.

We have a ten year old son who idolises some of them , and to be fair , they have a great way of entertaining him and millions of others .

They have huge talent in not just playing video games , but also in creating walkthroughs for the games that the kids understand . They make their own entertaining video clips from games they play and even I as an old fart can’t help admiring their work .

Fair play to them , and I’m sure plenty of people in the 1950’s thought the same about television presenters .

They've got a few million people who watch them on a PC / ipad instead of on a telly. What's the difference?

Yeah there's a lot of shit on youtube, kinda bland vlogging types that are advertiser friendly so get pushed by youtube. But there are a lot of really good ones who make great content and they work hard to get their fanbase

My son follows a few, he's met a few of his favourites and my daughters boyfriend has his own YouTube page that he films at my house to do with Pokemon. It's big business if you get enough followers x

My niece goes to school with an up and coming you tuber. She has 1000s of subscribers, gets lots of free things to try out and to promote. She earns a packet from it which is great for a young person to achieve.
