I can't pick one for the Best Gig thread, I keep changing my mind. So how about a gig that you weren't expecting to enjoy so much? Have you been dragged along to see a band you're not into, and been converted to fandom by the quality of their gigging chops? Have you been to see a band that you only kinda like and unexpectedly been absolutely blown away by the performance?

On the first count: I went along with pals to see Letlive thoroughly expecting to be a bit bored, but they absolutely captivated me. Next time I heard them on the radio it was like I was listening with different ears. I ended up buying their first two albums.

On the second count, I went to a Skunk Anansie show because I know someone that could sort me out a guestie. I knew I'd have a pleasant enough time, but I wasn't expecting to see one of the best, most energetic and relentlessly brutal live performances of my life. Skin is a fucking bona fide rock God, I rate that show amongst the best I've ever seen despite only ever being a casual fan.

I took Mrs N to see Justin Timberlake at the MEN a few years back. I was surprised to find that I enjoyed it immensely, having arrived there thinking 'oh god, I've gotta suffer 3 hours of this curly headed wally warbling away'.

This happens a lot with support acts, about 6-7 years ago I went to see Dream Theater in Leeds, and their support was a band called Frost, they were amazing.

Last year I went to see Yellowcard at Leeds uni, and they had a band called Normandie supporting, now anyone who knows Yellowcard knows they are a pop punk band, Normandie were more prog rocky, but they were very impressive.

I saw Whitesnake supporting Sex Leppard about ten years ago. I may as well have been at an 80s Monsters of Rock.

Had to take my Daughter to a Girls Aloud gig as she was only 7 at the time and quite enjoyed it myself, put on a good show

I once randomly ended up at a Barenaked Ladies concert (remember them!!) and it was so much fun. They just had a laugh and their songs were really catchy. I came away smiling.

FFS at the Troxy in Tower Hamlets, liked then from the moment I saw them on Jools Holland show, but live, the Sparks part blow me away with their energy and the Franz Ferdinand side were excellent with "Michael" bringing the house down. We were sent home with piss off, great fun show in an Art Deco venue, possibly the nicest place for a show I've been to also.

I went to Radio 1's big weekend back in '07, and stuck around to watch Scissor Sisters, and I am so glad I did. Genuinely brilliant to watch, and I wasn't even a fan of them. So much energy and enthusiasm, was great.

....and (don't laugh) Gilbert o'Sullivan....saw him performing outside Rough Trade Records in Potobello for World Record Store Day this year. A truly outstanding songwriter who was so underated.

I only got to see them once but they were fab.

I went and watched alt j as I thought well I like a few of their songs, not expecting to like the others, but I was in awe, they were amazing throughout the whole gig!

Twice now I've booked tickets to see bands I didn't know a great deal about, or particularly have a feeling either way for because LFV wanted to see them, gone on a crash course of their albums beforehand and come away from the gigs totally blown away and a confirmed "fan".

The first was Muse who we got tickets for their Wembley gig in 2010 (I think it was) - they put on an awesome show that day, sadly ruined for us by a bunch of idiots immediately in front of us who thought it'd be a great idea to start their own personal mosh pit - but saw enough to be blown away and have seen them another three times since.

The other was Biffy Clyro, who we got tickets to see them in Dublin last year, and again put on a brilliant show, so much so that we bought tickets and hired a car on spec and drove up to Belfast to see them again the following night, where we got on the barrier centre stage, which was an amazing experience.

I went to the script concert with my pal who's loved them from the beginning. I went but was looking forward to the lunch and drinks before it more. It was in the usher halls in Edinburgh which only held bout 2000 people. We were standing tickets and was right at the front. The support was JP Cooper who were fantastic but honestly The Script were fuckin awesome. I'll be honest I only know 2 of their songs and thought I was going to hate them but they were surprisingly rocky and were brilliant with the crowd. I've not listened to them since but going back in Feb to see them cos they were brilliant. My pal was so smug and said "I told you they were awesome" she was right x

McBusted are always entertaining- sort of like a 2hr mix of catchy pop tunes, stupidity and innuendo.

Madonna was surprisingly excellent last year and All Saints popped up as support for Duran Duran i think- and delivered rather a cracking performance for a band who hadn't been on a stage together in 10 years.

The Motley Crue roller coaster drum kit was worth the entry fee alone (despite the shite music)

I'll also back up a previous poster about Justin Timberlake, who delivered a top show back in about 2014- as did Katy Perry a year later.

(not that i'd actually see any of these if i had to pay mind ya)

earlier this year i managed a stage at a festival with a headliner i had never heard of...when being introduced to him i was a bit sceptical as he looked a bit dodgy and really wouldnt trust him with a guitar or two...chatting to him i began to like him, he was polite, enthusiastic about the gig and not at all fazed about the technical problems his guys were having..."don't need more than 2 guitars anyway..lets gets this thing going boss"

we had a packed house (100 ish capacity) and he came on with a keyboard player and a guitarist and proceded to blow me away with his amazing voice..sounding old before his time with a soul that had lived before...Artists name is Tom Grennan..and i had pleasure to work with him again 3 more times during the summer, all with a full band "told you it would be epic with full set of guys boss"

the other instance is Marmozets...i saw them at the 1 in 12 club in bradford when their average age was about 16 back in 2010...their drummer looked like he had skipped school to play...but mygod they were loud and mindblowing...seen umpteen times since and recently at pre festival warm up gig....new album is going to be a blinder if last singles were anything to go by!

Actually it was 1981, the year they played before AC/DC. It was the classic 'Live In the Heart of the City' line-up.

I think I saw Marmozets supporting Feed the Rhino in a teeny tiny tinpot venue some years ago. A gang of angry screaming kids with a lot more bluster than their diminutive stature would suggest, as I recall.

I love Joanne Shaw Taylor. Local girl, too. Her live set, as I recall, was a lot more stomping rock & roll blues than her album would suggest. Brilliant stuff.
