I'm buying a subscription for a smart 10 year old but the adult ones will probably be too much for her.Any recommendations?

I know diddly squat about computers, I don't even know what coding is but they learn it at school apparently.

I'd say magazines would be unnecessary there is more than enough on demand information on the internet!...Any particular specialist interest?

I know but I want them to actually read something. We are a book reading family, we curl up on sofas and in beds clutching favourite stories and poems, reading out loud and sharing.

What do you mean about specialist interest?

For example you mentioned coding...there are different languages in which to code...so maybe search for something specific to that language.

Send a note into school to whoever is teaching the coding and computers and they'll suggest what's suitable for your child's knowledge.

To be honest kids probably prefer to learn online now(shame but it is what it is)

If it's general PC knowledge not coding there are some computers for complete idiots and dummies type books from amazon.

Why don't you visit a big eh smiths and let your child look at the computer mag section

I've just decided to do that. It's my granddaughter and trying to find something online has failed, it's all aimed at younger children with what publishers think is interesting. Most of it is just condescending.

I've no idea what you mean so I'll just go and look at the magazine shelves.

Coding just means programming.

They tend to teach Python language to kids in school. There's books and magazines on that.

Lots are intended for the Rasberry Pi which is a £30 computer that you can programme and do little projects on, from mini-games to little automation projects, robots etc.

Coding is pretty simple if you use an online tutorial which just involves moving in blocks and then pressing a 'go' button.

I use SCRATCH with my grandchildren. Give it a go ....... 'seasy.

Buy her a raspberry pi development kit and a subscription to MagPi magazine.

A copy of WordPress for Dummies

Look up "Children's Programming Books" on Amazon, for books on Scratch or python for kids

Scratch might be too simple for a smart 10 year old?

I'm not going to buy any in store, just get an idea of what's out there. She has an interest in science too so it may end up being something along those lines.

Things are only easy if you know how to do them and my interest in computers stops with turning them on and using them for forums, emails and shagging.

Her knowledge will be way above mine, she'll be teaching me!

Saying coding is easy is like saying being a surgeon is easy because you did biology in school.

I'd go with raspberry pi stuff for a kid, and dont pressure them to pick it up easy.

Look at kits for that maybe. They can build all sorts and make them do what they like for fairly cheap.

There may be some coding subscription boxes available... I know there's a science experiment out there...

Also, you could get a raspberry pi and maybe a book on coding with Scratch or Python..?
