Looking for some advice please folks. My small person has just turned 7 and is starting to makes noises about a games console. Just to be clear I have no desire to drop £350 on the new Xbox Minecraft edition but what to go for?

Is it worth buying a second hand console?

Over to you!

Yes. You'll get a get some good deals (not as much as you would have in the summer)

Nintendo wii u is a great machine for kids. Even the Xbox 360.

Second hand is much better value, just make sure to see it working before paying.

Unless you have the same console multiple times then i don't understand the concept. There's a megadrive set up in our front room right now.

Try CEX, but you will find whatever they start with, be it PlayStation or Xbox they will stay with and just keep upgrading

But you can get a cheap second hand Xbox one cheap enough and think minecraft is only £15 in CEX

I've just bought bought 12 x ps3 games on ebay for £17. They are all in mint condition and originally retail at over £400. The kids are 9 and 6. Why waste money on new or even high street used.

Sadly gaming these days is a total rip off.

It used to be expensive, but "child expensive", as in spending 30 quid on your kid was seen as a lot.

now its adult expensive. They aim at adults as much as kids, so now the games are what 60 quid? and they are often broke. (as in need patching non stop to work)

Ultimately what console you get them will be chosen by their friends. If their friends get xbox thats what they will want, if their friends get game x, they will want it too to play with their friend. The days of going over and sitting side by side with one copy of the game is gone.

My son's PS3 died a few days ago .. but as he has loads of games I went on to game and looked at their pre owned ps3 .. got one £56 with 12 month guarantee ... for young kids don't waste money on the latest console they will be more than happy on a ps3 with mine craft for a few quid from game

My 4 kids at home seem to prefer the ipad type games and they can be bought for under £50 these days.

But wait til I pull out my old sega megadrive and they all want to play it !

There are some good deals on new consoles this week. You don't need the new Xbox the last one is still very current, the 360 is going out of circulation now unless used. It depends on what type of games they want, and in the next few years they will advance in the type of games they want as their friends influence them. But some good offers under £200 for a new console and games are worth looking at x

I've just bought an Xbox 360 with 16 games for £60.

Just need to get Minecraft for my daughter which is cheap enough 2nd hand.

Works perfectly well.

I found it for sale on my local Facebook pages.

I'd look more at the cost of games. The console games can be horrendous prices. Maybe a previous generation one is best? But for little ones ps3 for example seems to be more racing / shooting type stuff.

PC gives the best choice for cheaper very good games.

I’d also find out what consoles his friends have. At some stage he may want to try online gaming etc.

Oh yeah. Genuinely hadn't considered that. The last time I played was GTA just before my university finals...we barely had the Internets back then

Find out which one his friends have and then look at the Black Friday deals. You can get the original Playstation 4 and Xbox One dirt cheap with games. They both play all the latest games and will be future proof for another 8yrs or so. The Playstation 4 is the best selling and most popular. You can get them for just £199 and £229 on Amazon and other places. Games range from £5 to £50.

We loved the Wii and WiiU. The Mario Games are excellent for solo and family play.

Be aware that friends change consoles and your child may want to follow. My grandsons have 2 PS4s, the Wii and WiiU and now the youngest wants an XBox because his best friend at school has moved to XBox. He likes talking to him as they play multi player games.
