"The chavs will be running to their nearest .... in their track suits .."

Bit harsh that! Spoons is what it is, a cheaper alternative for a bite to eat and a drink. As a working class guy with no airs or graces I've walked out of certain bars as they're just full of poncey gits and overpriced booze. Horses for courses and all that I guess.

Well im sorry ... I dislike chain pubs .. They just microwave foods delivered in a huge lorry. I prefer home cooked food ...

or better still .... make your own .....it isnt difficult ...

You can read a recipe .....can't you ....

I go into Wetherspoon's pubs and I'm not a chav. I recently went to one near the Tower of London to meet family and there was not a chav im sight.

My area is so bad, we don't have a Wetherspoon's

The whole idea of going out to eat is going out, and not having to cook. The food in the London one was better than the nearest one I've used. They had posh chips

The local weatherspoons can be a little chavvy sometimes, it just depends on the location. Bit harsh a content though. They're a cheap pub. Can't fault that.

If you're out the house for 13/14 hours a day and getting home late, spending an hour in the kitchen (after getting someone to read a recipe for me) just isn't an option!

And I'm sure we all prefer home cooked food (depending on who's cooking ) but that wasn't the point of the thread.

Near Carmarthen

As Will Self says about that (Brexit) twat Tim Martin

'his pubs are shit, brown dollops of establishments smeared incontinently across our cities. Actually, “shit” is a little strong for Wetherspoon – a bit too gamey; they’re more shit-lite.

The clever thing is that he doesn’t style most of them “Wetherspoon’s” but retains their original names – the Dog & Duck, the Duke of York, whatever – so that it isn’t until you’ve sidled up to the bar, clocked the plethora of guest beers – Diamond Geezer, Comfortably Numb etc – written up on blackboards in faux chalk-strokes, and registered the corporate vibe that you realise you are in fact in another soulless bloody Wetherspoon’s'

Mr Martin has created himself quite an empire since opening his first pubs in North London..

Yep, the drinks are cheaper, the pubs have very little atmosphere with no music but he has turned some of the old derelict buildings about into something that resembles the splendour of their former glory...

Love or loathe the wetherspoons, they helped maintain the dwindling pub industry through the 90's and noughties... (at one point, a pub closed every day in the uk).. while Bass (inbev), punch taverns and greene king closed and sold off their outlets, wetherspoons was filling the void with new premises...

The pub scene has had a little resurgence of late with the popularity of real ales and gins creating new markets, so while not healthy, the wet trade is doing OK, but you need to thank Tim Martin for maintaining that industry that would have otherwise have died by now..

There are two Wetherspoons that I go in regularly,my favourite one is well decorated, clean, the staff are polite and friendly, the food is good, reasonably priced and you can order from your table using their app. The other one is almost as good just not quite.

They both have a reasonable range of drinks,I only drink wine so I'm no beer expert but it doesn't seem any better or worse than many other pubs.

I imagine Will Self would be regarded as a bit of a metropolitan snob by most of the locals but I would be happy to let him tell me what he thinks is wrong with these places,if he buys me a glass of wine.

The loos are nice too.

What's not to like?

Spoons is kind of a necessary evil in my eyes.

Take a local town as an example, might have one or sometimes two Wetherspoons and a selection of local privately owned pubs.

The surrounding local breweries would sell a lot less ale, therefore their prices go up to compensate and in turn the price of your pint goes up Too.

Same goes for the bigger brewers, spoons will take a lot of their stock, no spoons, less sales, more expensive pint for you.

It’s a vicious circle really. But a lot of people will choose to go to the chains who have bulk buying power and can take the hit on cheaper prices rather than a local who’s prices are higher since they have higher overheads.

Take away the likes of Wetherspoons and I guarantee the price of your drink would increase significantly

The market place in Doncaster has a wide variety of older, more traditional pubs with their original architecture, traditional ales, tables of old men sitting at a table playing dominoes etc you know the sort of thing. All very convivial but,,,,if you are a woman alone, you just walk into one of those pubs on your own. It's like an old wild west saloon, where all conversation stops and all eyes follow you.If they had a piano player he would stop playing too. You can hardly even get through the door anyway because of the crowds of cigarette smokers blocking the door.

I do like a traditional pub but Wetherspoons has its place,it is at least ,welcoming.

Incidentally, all the pubs in Doncaster town centre are always packed. They all seem to be doing good business.I don't think Wetherspoons can be blamed for any downturn in the market round here.

They're still closing where I live; we've lost about 10 I think, maybe more. We've had a couple of Brewers fayre Restaurant bars open up; one with a hotel attached. They are more for eating than drinking and the food is no better than Wetherspoon's. If you want nice food, you go to an expensive restaurant.

Sheffield

Our local one isn't chavvy. They sell more local small brewery beer than the other independant pubs. They turned a scummy local dive of a pub into a well run friendly place.

blimey someone has obviously had a bad experience in spoons....

cant beat them the foods standard across the board and the beers are well kept and cheap so they'll do me...

ive eaten in posh restaurants and I can cook as well from scratch but I prefer someone else cooking for me if possible and unlike some restaurants ive visited I have never had a bad meal from any spoons...

each to their own

i don't like the way Dim Martain keeps trying to force his political opinions on his clientele with those magazines on every table and beermats covered with his bad tempered rants about how difficult it is to make any money as a pub owner when he has a chain of 1000 pubs

The more expensive the restaurant, the better the food?? Not necessarily in my experience.

I'm just off to town and I will be calling in at one of my favourites for (what has always been previously) a very nice Steak and a glass of something sweet and bubbly. The place across the way does exactly the same for twice the price. Not poor quality by any means but no better.

I may be a chav (I have white wine with steak for a start,,,how common) but,I'll be a very happy chav.

It's also been mentioned that Wetherspoons tend not to have music.

They do tend to have lots of conversations going on though,in my experience. Soulless?? Not necessarily.

I don't like launderettes, never have. I'd never judge the people that find themselves using one though .......

I've used Wetherspoons many , many , many times. I'm not worried about being placed into a 'class' by shallow people.

The people I associate with don't use my choice of lunch to decide who I am.

Thank fuck for all the variety we have.
