Scent advice

I'm looking for a new perfume and wondered if fellow fabbers had any advice? I wore Givenchy III for years and loved it, until they reformulated it. Loved McQueen, the original, complete with 'musky' overtones, then they cleaned it up. Currently making do with Chanel 19, but not really loving it. I like woody, complex scents and HATE tonka and vanilla. Looking for something that lasts for ages with some complexity to it and I don't want to spend ridiculous money. Any ideas to help me narrow down my search?

Have you tried Very Irresistible by Givenchy?

I also like Cerruti 1881 and Chanel Allure.

I'm big No 5 fan but I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Have you tried Jo Malone's Pomegranate Noir. It's hard to describe as I think it's quite unusual but it lasts really well. It's not at all sweet or sickly but sophisticated, and what I wear if I want to feel sexy and classy (I live in hope of that). I can't think of another scent like it and have often had it remarked upon. To give you an idea, the official description is 'Ruby-rich juices of pomegranate, raspberry and plum are spiked with pink pepper and laced with Casablanca lily and spicy woods. Dark and enigmatic.'

Ooh these are great suggestions, thank you! So many I smell seem nice to start with but then reduce to sickly tonka or vanilla. I wouldn't have tried the pomegranate one for that reason without your recommendation.

Have you tried Thierry mugler Alien?

It has amber jasmine and woody undertones. It’s my fave at the moment and everyone comments when I’m wearing it too

I'm quite good at identifying different perfume notes and have never noticed any hint of vanilla on my skin. I really don't like overly sweet scents either as they make me feel nauseous so definitely wouldn't wear it if there was

La Fee mentioned one of Jo Malone’s perfumes. I’d suggest going and exploring all of them, they’re simply wonderful and there’s plenty of selection choices.

I love Jo Malone scents, but they are pricey, I’m wearing Wood sage and sea salt daytime (£90 for 100ml). And my absolute favourite for evening is Dark Amber and Ginger lily (£115 for 100ml):

I don’t buy a lot for myself, clothes etc (I hate shopping!) but I do love nice perfume.

When I was looking for a new perfume I asked the ladies advice in Boots. Told her what I liked, disliked, what my faves were etc. She suggested C'est Vie La Belle which I love.

She's worked in the perfume department for years so I knew she knew her stuff

My mum likes all the strong perfumes (Coco Chanel, YSL's Opium, Dior's Poison) and she quite likes Gucci's Guilty and Prada Candy.

Not sure if they have the things you don't like in them though, but they are strong, as she likes to be able to smell her perfume on herself all day.

I love body shops black musk and smokey rose is not bad either..the oils last for ages...also using rose jam and twighlight body sprays from lush, both have oils in so last forever and they smell amazing. I generally don't like most perfumes though, as they just smell like alcohol on me.

When I am looking for a perfume I bring a girl into the shop and get her to pick them for me.

I wear them to smell nice for women, not for myself.

If you can find a good looking guy who looks like he has some fashion sense, get him to pick one out for you. In my opinion.

La Vie Est Belle by Lancome is my absolute new favourite scent now. It's the only fragrance I've ever had comments on.

Dior J'adore is lovely... Always get nice complements when I'm wearing it.

Also Samsara by Guerlain though it may be too heavy for some tastes.
