I like a good debate. It's why I stay on fab;for the forums.

Sure the odd kiss avoid gap filler is ok but after a while it's good to have a topic worthy of thought,passion and perspective changing views.

But what are you like at debating? I notice the angry must get my point across, the quiet subtle suggestive sorts, the provocative stirrers and the quiet pondering all perspectives are valid types in here.

Are you good at debating or do you get wound up in here and mash your keyboard?

I hear what you say, and I'm not sure those folk woukd debate like that in person, but I do believe there's been some great discussions on less fractious topics like married and cheating etc. I've had my mind changed in here and realised I've been a sanctimonious tosser! (Due to being tired after work).

That is not unique to Fab. It is generally the case that people don't change their mind when challenged due to a combination of confirmation bias and ego.

Part of the issue with debate (in any setting) is that it is an adversarial exercise setting a false dichotomy of conflict which prevents meaningful discussion.

Debate can be a very powerful tool for perfecting knowledge as it is so often the case that most opinions are not wholly right or wholly wrong (although there are exceptions when factual detail is concerned), but rather by keeping an open mind we modify our opinions slightly to - as I said - make our knowledge more perfect (or at least less imperfect!).

In response to the forum question, I keep my debating style cool and calm as otherwise you are unlikely to make meaningful progress. The general rules I go by are:

1) Assume that your opponents are espousing their opinions in good faith (even Jacob Rees-Mogg).

2) Try not to resort to hyperbole or 'ad hominen' attacks.

3) And don't dismiss people's opinions - even when based on what may be quite limited experience.

I like a good debate. I don't, however, like arguments or confrontation even if it is merely via th written word. So any debate I might enter into is tempered by that dislike and I tend to step away when either I or the other person seems to be getting tetchy. Unless I find it especially funny to wind them up; I'm not a saint.

I don't mind listening in to a good debate, but it's never normally a debate just everyone stating their own views.

I get a bit bored when people bring out 'the statistics ' to make themselves seem supremely knowledgeable. I'm not normally quick enough to add much, by the time my brain has come up with something and my fingers have typed it, the thread is seven pages deep and my thoughts are irrelevant.

Although I use here mainly to just post inane drivel, I don't mind getting involved in a debate if it's a subject that I feel strongly enough about.

I would never diss anyone for their views though, no matter how much their opinion is different from mine.

Sooner go to the pub, fall out, have a punch up in the car park, then go back inside and buy each other a pint

Do debates have to be about winning and losing? About proving who is right and who is wrong?

I like ones where you just see a variety of viewpoints. I think it would be a boring world if we all agreed on everything and. if someone was proved right,wouldn't we have to agree?

Respectful and tolerant disagreement make for a much more enjoyable debate,in my opinion.

Yup, I like my opinions or beliefs challenged - it makes them stronger if they stand. I'm pretty logical and I strive to be objective and tactful in any debate, though sometimes that gets a bit challenging on here!

I'm an essay writer

I start on point and then my mind wanders. I over think and then waffle to try to explain what I mean as clearly as I can but then I write too much which can just end up making it worse! Especially since it means I'm a slow responder. I'm also one who struggles with spelling and grammar and know this so I take longer to check what I'm typing, although I still mess up sometimes.

I don't think I've ever managed to change anyone's mind but I seem to write replies with the view that they might at least give someone else something interesting to think about.

I try not to let sarcasm get the better of me but sometimes I hit "Post Message" quicker than my brain goes "Maybe I should rewrite that first!"

I'm also one who writes long comments only to delete them afterwards and not post anything!

I like to debate, I like to challenge my ideals and opinions and give mine too. I also like to challenge other peoples too.

I was on the school debate team when I was in school. I've always enjoyed it. I can put my point across calmly when I need to. Although I do like a good argument with no rules too

I've certainly changed some of my opinions as a result of conversations on here, but then i never see my opinions as fixed, i like the term 'working theory'. There are people i keep in touch with on kik and PM's and none of them are really aligned to my own views.

I think some people use an ideology to think for them and i use the block button as a reminder not to bother getting into a back and forth with them.

The forums are good fun although too much drama in the irish one lately..

My course at uni was pretty much based around debating. I do like good debates, but not with those who aren't willing to listen to what you have to say and consider it. It'd be just like debating with a brick wall.

I've had my thoughts swayed plenty times, due to what others have put forward.

I used to debate politics but having actually lost friends over it I've stayed well out of political debates for a good few years now! My responses were always civilised and calm, but that didn't stop others resorting to personal insults and other nastiness rather than actually debate the issue. Some people really can't cope with others having a different view

Im always calm and collected and consider my response before giving it. I take time to consider other peoples opinions and while I might not agree I can respect their right to have them.

I can get a bit frustrated if the point Im making is misunderstood or misconstrued though.

I find that using “debate” has become kind of like the word banter.

In essence it’s just a politer way of saying, I’m going to be a cunt.

I’ve seen very few examples both on and off fab of people “debating” where it’s nothing more than a school playground slanging match. Where neither will move on their stance, so the whole ordeal is pretty much pointless.

I also believe it should be done face to face, and not on the keyboard. I wanna see the whites of the eyes of anyone involved in a debate.

Debate - A formal discussion on a particular matter in a public meeting or legislative assembly, in which opposing arguments are put forward and which usually ends with a vote.

If you think theres even the remotest chance of that ever happening in the fab forums then grab an emoji of your choice and run of to a remote island and enjoy the conversation lol

That aside a face to face decent conversation / debate is always a good way to educate/ learn new ways to look at things

If I have not decided I usually take devils advocate approach and get people to simply debate me wrong.

Its a shame because this valid form of debating is often called trolling by people incapable of debating their point properly.

I don't debate anything unless the subject matter interests me. It's pretty pointless on the internet as it invariably degenerates into a slanging match with people hiding behind their keyboarrds.
