"Tapping as in chirping?" Tapping as in tapping, they seem to be too busy to be singing.

"I went to Google and typed: Why do great tits bang against the tree? Ok, now if we ignore the first two pages of results what I have learned is they might be testing the strength of the wood, doubt it as they can't all set up a home in that tree. Maybe they were trying to act like rain and trick the tree, sap might come out and the tits get pissed on it or something? Maybe trying to get bugs to appear thinking it was rain (they are my guesses). My specialist field is The Robin. I had one with me yesterday 'helping' me in the garden, she only stopped chirping when I found a small worm and then it would start again. She almost eats out of my hand." That's really cool, i have friendly robins following me around too but they never let me get closer than arm's length. You've come up with some interesting theories to explain the tapping and i'd possibly go with testing the strength of the wood. Also they're in a small stand of wild cherries so i think they might be trying to break open the kernels to get to the seeds. Who knows?
