Generalisation

Why are all "_______" so and so.

There are 30,000 ish people on here at peak times, yet we see thread after thread berating entire groups of people based on a small percentage of interaction through the site.

Is this due to people's experiences or peoples perceptions?

Do we overgeneralise?

Yes, we do. I don't like it at all and I don't think any other people who are 5ft 1 do either

Drives me mad. I'm me, just me. I speak on behalf of me.

I'm an individual and I appreciate others are individuals too.

I detest threads of status's that begin with 'Why do men/women....'

The OP knows already, knows it isn't true and to me it just smacks of bitterness/being gilted or not liking something that's just happened it what the OP wrote is their way of feeling better about them self. 'There you go that will teach you'. It never will though. Neither will it change but as often mentioned, it's a great filter in helping who to avoid.

Yes but it points to how flawed opinions (as coloured by personal experience) can be.

I’m wondering what you base that opinion on?

That’s an understatement, it’s usually generated from butt hurt (Meli, 2017). I also think ppls judgement can be crap, their inability to read ppl generates disappointment

As a rule, I don't like generalizations. Most are just blatantly untrue and the ones with a miniscule amount of fact in them make no allowances for any exceptions to the rule. Often, people that generalise have already made their minds up, aren't open to other opinions and aren't into the possibility of changing their views. Although some obviously are.

Very difficult subject to comment on without generalising!

Some of the threads that generalise are quite amusing and a good opportunity to have a laugh with other people that have spotted the irony or the bigotry or, the what ever in such threads.

Maybe people's judgement being crap and the ability to read people through a screen where we miss all those none verbal clues that are part of communication offline are part of the reason for so many disappointments in the ways we interact here. We only ever see such a small part of someone and even that's constrained by how we write and others read our words.

The absence of vocal triggers in txt the inflection in our voice even how we may write in a totally different manner to how we speak all serve to make all none face to face interaction far less complete.

I wonder if they lead to a form of mental shorthand where we overgeneralise based on our response to incompleteness of txt compared with direct face to face contact
