I really don't like Christmas,never have.

It just seems so false. the notion of 'peace on earth and goodwill to all',why can't we have that all year round?

I'm not a huge fan of mince pies or turkey either.

I'm not a Christian and I don't want children to sing me songs on my doorstep.And why is it that they only ever seem to know 'we wish you a merry Christmas' when there are much better Christmas carols?

All my Scrooge like miserableness fades away though on Christmas eve.When I go down to the village of Tickhill,where they close off the main street and the salvation army band plays. Can't help but be moved by the sounds of 'once in royal davids city' on a cold and frosty night,with the aromas of mulled wine and all the cheery red faces and smiling children.

Actually,thinking about it,I love certain aspects of Christmas.

I dont like the fact that its months build up to it and decorations/advertising out in october. (Although i admit to having done all my shopping )

But i enjoy the couple.of days where the whole family get together. Its a rarity for my family.

I do like being with my family on Xmas day (but to be honest I see them twice a week anyway) but as I don't have kids there's nothing magical in it for me plus December has three huge life changing event anniversaries for me so it's just miserable...

One year something is gonna happen to make me realise I have something GREAT to look forward to in December and the bad stuff will fade away (she says silently praying even though she doesn't believe in prayer!!!)

A few years back,I was supposed to go to a friends house for Xmas dinner but I fell ill and couldn't go. I spent the entire day on my own,lying on the sofa in my nightie with just a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates.

I still have fond memories of that as one of the best Christmases I ever had.

It's not just aboit relationships for me though ... all my friends are becoming grandparents now and I feel horribly detached from them at this time of year because my babies were born sleeping so I've never had the "magic of Xmas" with my own kids never mind grandkids

I hate the fact that the build up for Christmas starts in October. It's just greedy commercial corporate shit trying to sell us shit that hasn't really got anything to do with Christmas.

I hate Christmas up until the week before when most people have got it sorted and their stress levels are coming down again and people start to embrace the true spirit of it. I'm not religious but I enjoy the time off work with my family, the odd carol and a glass of mulled wine. I like the peace and quiet when I step out side early on Christmas morning and everything is still. I like hearing stories about acts of kindness from random strangers. Christmas is OK when it finally arrives once the build up bullshit has finished.

People's stress levels coming down the week before Christmas?! In my experience that's when they soar. Try being an online retailer and copping flack from people because they didn't do their shopping in time, they get seriously nasty

That's so sad, no wonder Christmas isn't happy for you, I guess it's similar to me in that it rams down the throat all you don't have. I don't have a family to have Christmas with and seeing it everywhere, telly, ads, other people, just reminds me constantly whereas most of the time I just get on with life and consider myself lucky for what I do have.

I love it. I love the build up (in December not before).

I try to look at the things I do have and be grateful for those. Spending time with friends and family is so important and it can go amiss the rest of the year.

Sounds horrible, my son used to work a customer service desk. Amazing how un christmasy people can be while they are sorting out their Christmas. I hope you don't get to much shit this year and you get a few days off to unwind. Take deep breaths and count to ten and don't let the bastard's get you down.

I'm often made to feel that I'm a misery for not liking it which is weird especially when the people who say this know Damn well that I am nowhere near miserable ... I don’t ‘do’ Christmas anymore. I did the whole thing when my kids were young but for the last 10 years I haven’t. I’m not religious at all and have a very small family so now I just get together with my kids if they’re about and enjoy a long hike to our favourite place, do a few daft ( now traditional) things, eat and drink what ever we like and no presents. I give to charities instead. If kids are elsewhere then I’m happy on my own. no tree, no turkey, no presents no drama.

You're not the only one. I do Christmas for my boys. I do my best to make it happy for them but I hate it. Its just us so feels like any other day. Im on my own and have been for years. It still hurts that I play Santa alone. I cry every xmas eve as I spend hours wrapping. I feel guilty for the boys that we aren't surrounded by masses of people.

It is what it is and can't be avoided.

No, it doesn't really do anything for me anymore. It's all become a bit of a drag. There's personal reasons at the heart of it. That magic around it that used to be there has now gone. When I was younger I used to love it more than anything and that makes my current feelings towards it even more difficult to deal with. Now it's just a time of melancholy and loneliness and 'getting through it'. I'm glad when it's over.

I dread it. I'm not religious, and I hate the greed that Christmas brings out in too many people and the spoilt brats that it creates. So for me personally I'm not a fan.

Although it's got better as I've got older because I've just said no, I also hate the forced parading around to different family members. You don't see them all year or they don't want to see you but at Christmas, one of the busiest times of year where in some cases you're fighting with others for time off, family get pissy if you can't go see them when they demand.

Then you have the, in my step-family anyway, if it isn't on your Amazon wishlist you aren't getting it because actually getting to know your family is just too damn hard. Then there's the hassle from them to keep the list full and up to date but theirs is empty! Even if you don't want anything it needs to have stuff on it because they don't do vouchers, they apparently are crap presents. So you end up with stuff you don't want, that you know is coming and had no thought put into it.

It used to be fun as a child, the excitement, the surprise, the fun, but as an adult all I see is stress, forced fun and greed.

Thankfully the family has got a lot smaller as my parents have split (although this is the first Christmas of that so let's see how much guilt makes it uncomfortable) and so it's going to be a smaller one, more relaxed, less stress, less traipsing around the country to fill up everyone else's children's bedrooms with plastic tat that gets ignored after Christmas. I'm looking forward to it, I haven't looked forward to Christmas for a long time

I do actually have my girl's and family so I'm not really alone,I just feel like it's a forced happiness when my heart doesn't feel it.

I know I have a lot to be thankful for and shouldn’t feel like that. My ex many year's ago when the girls were little had to confess exactly a week before xmas he'd been cheating which ended our family unit,my decision. Since then xmas has just been flat...

It's not just you, I not only don't look forward to it but pretty much dread it. I find the enforced expectation of how you 'should' view the occasion really stressful and wish I could just run away (though appreciate it's different for kids). In fact the best Xmas I ever had as an adult was when I was abroad in Israel and spent the day walking because there was no pressure.

What gets me is that on a specific date - and unfortunately, also on several surrounding dates - you're 'supposed' to get together with people you don't actually want to be with for prolonged periods (appreciate of course that some families get on very well which must make a big difference). That brings up a lot of longstanding issues about family relationships for me and the enforced jollity actually has quite the opposite effect. Then there's family politics - and an emotive occasion like Xmas is a prime opportunity for some people to shit stir and emotionally black mail - which sucks out any genuine joy and makes it all exhausting.

Emotionally the whole thing is and always has felt like huge effort for very little return and that's before you get onto the practical and financial aspects which I often end up resenting too. Again, the outlay (in all senses of the word) horrifies me and can be a real worry but it's often been very difficult to circumvent that without causing ructions in the wider family.

I know I sound like a horrid Grinch and I do 'do' Xmas for my children but I think I just struggle to see the real benefit of it and the way it's pushed (if you have no religious interest) as the most important family occasion doesn't allow for people who don't have supportive families. I also find the more general and often competitive greed and excess quite obscene

Always loved Christmas but after I lost my wife 4 years ago its never been the same for me, I still miss her very much.

I have started heading over to warmer climates for Christmas and heading out to the The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, Hawaii. this is the world's premier series of professional surfing events that runs from November 12 through December 20

This takes my mind off Christmas, but I do find myself sitting in a bar at the end of the night, few glasses too much to drink and tears in my eye

I have a lovely family i adore. A daughter and a son and 3 lovely granddaughters.i at times wish i had a partner also to be with as well.however i will spend xmas day with my family.

I don't really look forward to it. The last few years I've not bothered with any decorations or cards, last year I sent no gifts, I feel guilty and this year I've made all my gifts.

Religious reasons aside it's gotten out of hand and it's not fun. A lot of money spent on giving presents and a roast dinner.

The only thing I look forward to with Christmas is the few days that we have off work together.

Oh, and Mr Bs homemade mince pies.

I can't bear all the adverts/ build up that seem to start earlier each year. Family that you're expected to visit, that you don't want to. Cost and general hassle of it. How busy the shops are and how rude people get. I could go on, but I won't.

I can relate to this OP. I'm pleased for my friends but it still hurts that I won't be able to experience the same joy. That said I'm greatful for what I do have and although I'm always glad when Christmas is over I do get to spend a lovely day with my niece and nephews. Big hugs to those who feel bad over the festive season x

I used to love Christmas. In some ways it's still my favourite time of year and I have happy memories of Christmases past.

My children are grown with families of their own and the other half having no family since he was 17 has never celebrated Christmas and loathes it. He thinks "alternating" how we spend Christmas is a compromise, I don't, so don't bother. Ignoring Christmas is not an option.

Still love Christmas though and already bought my Bailey's so I'm all set!

Do you know what after a busy morning I have just read through this thread with a smile on my face (and a tear in my eye for some of the comments) and want to thank most of you for taking away the "guilt" I have carried for hating Xmas ... we who don't have really valid reasons (and I haven't posted mine as they are extremely personal) for not liking it but to be able to share with like-minded people has brightened my day.
