dog fights

heard a horrible noise about 15 mins ago and looked outta the window to see 2 dogs (a staffie and a springer spaniel) fighting.

it wasn't a nice site and the owners were distraught (both the dogs were on leads).

i live on a main road and have double glazing. the windows were shut but i could here the horrendous noises they were making above the sound of the traffic.

this went on for 3-5 minutes until (thankfully) a guy came out of his house and threw water over them which broke it up.

it brought home to me that anyone who can place or take bets on a dog fight is nothing short of barbaric.

I would be really upset if i had seen that. Last year my little dog had a stroke and she needed to be put down, but the vet couldnt do it straight away, it was a saturday and she was operating on a dog that had been attacked by another dog.

"They are the scariest things ever

they both walked away from it thankfully. weirdly the staffy seemed to come off worse and it's owner was visibly shaken. the guy who came out was comforting her.

the spaniel only looked like a young dog too (non docked tail)

Dogs generally make a lot of noise for no reason- however, if it was a planned fight, then I abhor it. Mine shout a lot- simply because it gets them noticed- I don't allow it, but the initial bark is one I can't always anticipate

Scarey stuff indeed! I used to have a collie and when he was only a pup, the dogs around here used to try and have a go, so he learnt to go on the defensive!

never had a fight as he was actually a wimp, but he showed signs he could look after himself...though as an owner, it is a scarey thing to go through.

Our neds think that too unfortunately- its a real pity, as their " fighting" dogs are amazing when treated properly

The other owner just stood there and laughed......fucking wanker ...shook me up bigtime though

Not nice to see and fair play to the bloke who broke them up. Hope the dogs are ok, you can never be too careful about letting two strange dogs get too close. It does annoy me to see so many dogs off leads now, fine if the dog is well trained but even so you just don't know if they are going to turn aggressive.

I never walk my dog around our village. I always take him to the woods a couple of miles away. Sometimes I walk him there, sometimes I take him in the car.

My dog is a large lurcher type, but he regularly gets attacked by farm dogs. They are always in two's or three's. Luckily my dog is fast as fook and up to now he's always got away. In a one on one he will defend himself.

A dog on a lead is very vulnerable in my eyes.

We live in a country village and there are loads of dogs around, mostly working dogs, and on the whole they are generaly ok.

We're lucky that we don't have gangs or groups of lads with trophy dogs.

"

It always saddens me when I go to the local dogs home that a good proportion of the animals in there are staffy / pit bull looking.

Every staffy I have known has been soft as buggery but sadly for the breed, their build and the jaw lock they have has made them a target in the trophy dog stakes.

The more irresponsible owners can't afford or can't be arsed to look after the dog let alone socialise them and so they find their way to the 'pound'

The latest trend in trophy dogs tend to be akita / american bulldog / dogue de bordeaux types and in the hands of a fuckwit they become very scary 'weapons'

They take some looking after so it's only a matter of time before the kennels become full of them too !

Again I will say- 90% owner, 10% dog

I have a Spinger and they don't have to be young, these days not to be docked.

ANd di you say both dogs were on leadfs, OP?

Surely they could have yanked them away?

My dog has been attacked and I waded in and kicked the other dog off mine- thankfully it didn't turn on me, probably because I was also shouting my head off- much more frightening I think!

I was lucky- but this sort of thing makes me really angry- its just as the lady says above 90% owners fault.

it was a middle aged lady with the staffy and a schoolboy with the springer, so it was probably just a freak meeting where 1 of the dogs 'turned'

i didn't see the onset, just looked out the window when i heard the racket.

i agree entirely with the sentiment of bad owners vs breed stereotypes btw

If someone hasn't the ability to control a dog then a muzzle should be worn. I would also insist the dog has one as well if it is to be taken out in public
