Hi all.

Are any people out there union reps or in a union? Are they still effective or is it a tired idea today?

I know in my sisters job the union got everyone money over some dispute and non union members didnt get the money.

However if you ask me they are just mobsters, they threaten you that you have no rights unless you sign up with them, they want money, protection racket, and I'd never join them.

I'll fight my own battles, and take a dismissal on the chin.

I was in a union once, and would have never been without it. Unions fight for rights, terms, favourable work conditions, decent wages and pensions. The only problem of course being the right wing capitalist system doesn't like workers having these, and with that in mind has slowly slowly but surely over the years, eroded away Union powers, which in turn has compromised workers rights, pay, and conditions.

despite false common perceptions of militancy the union provide a good source of information on all sorts of personnel issues in the work place that very often, company managers themselves are to ignorant or even incompetent to understand or comprehend.

Fully support Unions coming from a management perspective they've been great at getting both sides working together. I go out of my way to get the union in if any situation arises so we can sort it out quickly and fairly.

Never had a job where there's been one..never felt like I've needed one really, even when I've been unhappy in job, any gripes I just go to the boss and get it sorted, seems a bit long winded relying on others to do it for you

Then again...the companies I've worked for have all been small enough that I can just go to the boss myself.

never really thought about it much more than that..guess it's nice to to have people to fight your corner..though weird to want to work somewhere where you'd need that, I prefer a more informal work environment personally.

this..

the days of 'red Robbo' and similar minded practises are rightly confined to history, such things are oft trotted out by some on the right and certain employers as a means to vilify and steer workers away from a union..

as an ex official i found with most managers that common ground could be found and on the occasions not it was usually the case that a manager was trying it on outside of policy and operational procedures and was reigned in with a phone call..

How? What solution? What problem?

Every single problem I have had I have taken directly and got it sorted to an acceptable compromise to myself.

I have never had a boss try force me to do stuff outside my contract, but I read my contracts and learn them. I have stuff I don't like removed before I sign.

We all know the only "problem" they solve is how to get money out of people by telling them they have no rights without them. Or trying to get people to band together to get more money for a job they all openly accepted the current pay for doing. Whats that about?

that is incorrect ... that is just one very small part of the function which they perform in the work place. it's not your fault either that you've been lead to believe this which is very unfortunate and pretty sad to be honest.

I'm a retired full time officer.

For those I've helped, they've named their first born after me. For those I've not got the outcome they wanted they burn my effigy 5 November each year.

I've come across employers who have bent over backwards to help and assist and others that need locking up.

There are people frightened of authority figures/suffering mental health issues etc who lack the confidence/coherence to put their case across.

No. We don't all know that. As a union rep that is not the only thing I do. I successfully negotiated someone being able to stay in her role after it was re-sourced. I've had to give people food bank vouchers because they havent had a pay rise in several years due to government pay freeze. I've helped someone through post natal depression and her manager threaten her with capability issues.

Be thankful you are in a position to negotiate for yourself. Many are not.

Do not get me started (oh you did).

Trade Unions are an absolutely essential asset to many work places. However, when they don’t sufficiently train or support their shop stewards and forget who pays for their existence whilst they ponce about trying to be political heavy weights, their membership remains essentially unrepresented and frustrated.

*shuffles away from the soap box to make a cup of tea*.

I agree some unions appear to be immense for their members and fighting for workers rights. However not all are forthcoming and in times of need are lacking. I've approached mine for advice that I need urgently and still waiting for someone to acknowledge my request

So you've first-hand experience, from your sister, that they benefit and look after their members. And furhermore working backwards from the story, those without unionization get shafted (financially), but you still think these professionals are 'mobsters' like in some 50's American propaganda film.

Only as affective arms the reps in place, some reps are only interested in themselves or their buddies, a good rep however is worth their weight in gold!
