FabSwingers.com forum: Unwanted gifts dilemma

So as Christmas is almost upon us its time inevitably to start planning for the celebrations of the birth of jesus, or for the atheists amongst us, skinting yourself to see the gleaming smiles on your friends and families faces when they open your truly awesome gift(s). (Scrouges prob best to ignore this post).

Now with the risk of sounding slightly like a scrouge myself and ungreatful, I do put some effort into buying gifts that I think would suit each person. Now with family, it is what it is. They will have overly expensive gifts because its something they have wanted etc, but with friends I have started to lose the will. The last couple of years I have kept gifts from various people that I wouldn't use or simply don't like. E.g a three piece candle holder set, wtf!

Now normally I would just give them to charity and forget about it.

I have repeat offenders of naff gifts now after my thoughtful efforts so this year they will be getting last years gift to me back. Nicely wrapped of course as I said I'm not scrouge.

Anyone else suffer from the same thing?

Or am I ranting about nothing?

Should I suggest giving a donation straight to charity as that's where the gifts and up anyway?

I only buy for and receive from immediate family. The whole thing is just a never ending cycle of buying and receiving shit mostly.

Why not suggest instead of buying for friends that you'll donate to charity instead?

I hate that, folk buy each other such shut at Christmas, factories spewing out stupid smelly sets in wicker baskets and beer glasses with stupid phrases slapped up the side..I always ask nobody gets me anything, it's a weird time of year, watching folk wonder about like brain dead zombies, pawing at that third pair of shoes and fifth pair of jeans with the shiny reduced sticker on it, loading up on shit other people don't want or need and that will be in the charity shop box or bin by next spring.

If you sit back and observe it, it's just weird as far as habits go.

See something you think I'd love and I need? Get it for me...why wait till Christmas? And just because it's christmas, don't feel like you need to get me something just because you've been brainwashed into believing that's the thing to do. Fuck off, keep your chintzy shit and stop being so wasteful.

I wonder how much Christmas costs the environment every year?....

Just ask them not to buy you a gift or tell them what you would like. Don't give them their gift back that's just rude.

We buy for very few people and found that when we said we didn't want to exchange gifts we were met with relief.

Another idea is to set a limit of £1 -£5.

Christmas is the only time I enjoy shopping. I love the atmosphere, Christmas music, decorations and Christmas themed gifts. I'm grateful for everything anyone buys me, regardless of whether I will use it; although,I don't expect much and don't get much anyway.

I'm thankful that I'm here to enjoy Christmas with my family, as some of them are not.

I wonder if candles are the thing people buy when they don't know what to get someone. I have numerous candles scattered about, some from 3 Christmases ago. I'm not really into all that stuff, so they barely get lit and just shoved to the side.

But I understand I'm probably not an easy person to buy for, as I don't collect anything or have any specific tastes. My most favourite gift last year was a walking dead monopoly game, but that's only been played twice.

I tend to put thought in when buying gifts, 9 times out of 10 I buy humourous presents. I know what I buy probably won't be something they use all the time, but I feel like it usually represents them in some way.

I never give to expect to receive, so when I do get something I'm grateful and wouldn't give it them back because I don't like it. Several of my items normally end up at the school in some kind of raffle
