Hi new to this site and new to forums so please be gentle.

So this began few years back lost a true friend and a family member in the same weekend. I never really got over it,few years down the line I got made redundant from a job I adopred due to cut backs.

I also dislocated my ankle so bad it split in half and sliced through the ligaments. This pushed me into a dark scary place. I felt fat useless and the world would be better without me.

Bit through rehab for my ankle I found a love for running. It’s my saviour. I’m calm and feel great when out running. I’ve lost all the weight gained during injury lay off and completed a big charity race twice and love the buzz I get. Anyone else feel the same or just want to chat about there depression just message male or female .

Being able to run, or even just getting outdoors can be very beneficial to your mental health as well as your body

Often it's being trapped indoors that feeds a cycle of depression.

Running, for me, gives me the time for peace away from the daily grind, and not having to worry about "life".

Just the act of putting one foot in front of the other is a start.

I always used to run on my own, but have recently joined a running group and the social side of being with others had also been good for me

In terms of your friends what things did they say to you that helped. My friend has depression and I just treat her the same as my other friends. Sometimes I think it's a bit harsh and other times I think it does her the world of good x

My eldest son suffers from depression.

It's been a nightmare for all of us to live with. He would come home from work in such a state some times. We tried to get him to look for a different job to no avail. Eventually circumstances forced the issue. After numerous interviews and a process that left him feeling worse, he was eventually offered a couple of apprenticeships. One as an engineer and one as a gardener. I had a feeling that after the initial honeymoon period at the engineers workshop, that mentally he wouldn't be any better off. He used to love outdoor activities and regularly took part in things like the Ten Tor's Challenge. Having read about the positive effects that fresh air activities have on depression we chatted and he decided to take the gardening job. He is such a changed person. It hasn't cured his depression but it's really helped to make it less severe and more manageable.

I hope running doesn't mean you are at risk of aggravating your injury. If it does, remember there are still lots of things you can do that get you out in the fresh air.

Depression is a terrible thing. Well done for finding something that helps you keep it under control.

Swimming and bouldering for me.

Swimming gives you time to process things and bouldering keeps your mind so occupied that you stop thinking about everything apart from what you are doing. It’s a good little rest from over thinking and stress

Welcome to the forums.

Well done for being so open about your struggles to a bunch of strangers. There's a lot on here who have had similar issues and can be very compassionate and supportive.

I've been battling for over a year with chronic depression, anxiety, paranoia, and more recently agoraphobia, I have shared some of my experiences on here too, on my own thread 'movember #1' (click the green arrow next to me name to find it) to try help raise awareness and give a personal insight into the the daily struggles and coping strategies.

I wish everybody the best in managing this devastating disability that too often leads to suicide.

Stay safe, you're stronger than you think

Thru injury can't run now and miss it as much for sorting my head out as I do for the benefits of physical improvements. Tried cycling - just not the same for me

Top man! Can relate to most of the above and I struggle with depression but I've hidden it pretty well from most people (I know that's not the best way to tackle it!). I've had serious ankle problems for 20+ years now and due an ankle reconstruction in the near future. Physically I'm a mess and for someone who was addicted to sport it sucks! I just hope this operation works because I love running and I'd love nothing more than being able to get back out on the roads again.

I'll use you as inspiration mate!

Hey

I’d love to wave a wand and tell you it’s all gonna be fine, but as we all know it doesn’t work like that so I can only push some positivity your way.

The running thing really does help many people, you’d be surprised how good it can make you feel and this does effect the other elements of life that aren’t going so well.

Give it a try pal

I can't run - but your story is inspirational and hope-filled for those who can.

In my case, relief from depression comes in the form of small, foil wrapped pills.

Wishing you all the best OP

Emm x
