Did i do something wrong at garage?

After the mechanic lowered the car on inspection lift, i noticed the bonnet wasn't shut properly. Being a helpful person decided to press down on it. I realised the mechanic hadnt put handbrake on (and it was in neutral as the engine was running)

The car rolled back sharpley, early knocking him over and rolling out into the street.

He carried on as normal afterwards but not sure what he thought.

Would you go back there again if it happened to you?

I’m sure there’s a notice somewhere that members of the public aren’t allowed in the workshop area? Now we know why

Just thinking exactly that. His fault for allowing you into the workshop. The real reason you shouldn't be there is for your safety. You don't have the necessary training to conform to the H&S regs, and it's unlikely you were wearing the correct PPE.

If you were working there then the company need to revise their H&S policy. If you were not working BN there then you are technically general public.
