but sweetie, £1.07 of what you paid is tax, so at 23p/lt, the fuel cost is still quite reasonable don't you agree??? lol, xxx

Exactly right! In some middle-eastern countries, orange juice is more expensive than whisky is in the UK.

And who would sacrifice the freedoms that we have here for a few bob off the price of petrol? Yeah, right! Just go swinging in Saudi Arabia, and see how long you live!

Though everyone will tell you that the NHS, education, army, police and benefits here is shit... its considerably much better than most of the above countries.

Thats true, i remember going to majorca a few years back and it was cheaper to drink the local larger than water

A liter of san miguel was the equivalent of 33p a 500ml bottle of water from out the vending machines that scattered the streets was almost £2.50

Its just local stuffs cheaper, lots of the countries that have cheap petrol will produce the oil, but you go and try to buy normal every day food from these places, or see the cost of rent compaired to the average wage its sky high

At the end of the day a cars a luxury item and id sooner have sky high petrol prices than food, water and rent

No, I don't think thats the case. A half litre of lager in Paris was 5 euros, but I could have bought the same for 2 euros in the supermarket. Pubs have to pay rent, rates, water, heating etc etc, and it adds up. Yes, the gopvernment is taking the piss somewhat but it's because British people are complete tossers at chucking out time.

No where, frankly, I'd want to actually live. You'll note that most of those countries subsidize fuel costs below world prices to their populations. So it is artificial economy, taking with one hand and giving with the other.

the country costs money to run. money comes from us. so whether we pay it as fuel tax or income tax or vat you will pay it for the quality of life we have here.

"the country costs money to run. money comes from us. so whether we pay it as fuel tax or income tax or vat you will pay it for the quality of life we have here. "

Most countries will expect their citizens to contribute to society and not be a burden to it. The social "purse" is completely out of proportion to this country's ability to support it and hence the outrageous tax burden which if you actually work it gives you a paltry sum of money that is actually yours compared to what you have legitimately earned.

Cost of a s.ocially (ir)responsible society

Not to mention we burn a whole lot more of the stuff than most of the countries the PO listed, thus we cause far greater damage to the global environment whilst soaking up a hugely disproportionate level of its natural resources in comparison to the OP's chosen top ten ,,, .... whom it should also be noted, have much lower average wage, and minimum wage structures in place than the uk making their lower fuel costs, seem a lot fairer in the whole scheme of things....

10. Algeria: Algiers — 20p per litre - minimum wage in US Dollars 4,277

9. Oman: Muscat — 20p per litre - minimum wage in US Dollars 7000

8. Egypt: Cairo — 19p per litre has No minimum wage structure in place

7. Qatar: Doha — 15p per litre has No minimum wage structure in place

6. Kuwait: Kuwait City — 14p per litre - minimum wage in US Dollars 12341

5. Bahrain: Manama — 13p per litre has No minimum wage structure in place

4. Turkmenistan: Ashgabat — 12p per litre minimum wage in US Dollars 2735

3. Libya: Tripoli — 9p per litre minimum wage in US Dollars 1785

2. Saudi Arabia: Riyadh — 8p per litre minimum wage in US Dollars 15170

1. Venezuela: Caracas — 2/3p per litre minimum wage in US Dollars 8470

Signed,

Yours Truly, an Ex Oil Industry Worker in many of the countries listed above

True what you say but look at it this way we are a firstworld country and they are 2/3 world countries with no nhs, social services, benefits ect ect. I use to work for the UN the things we thought were rubbish were like gold for them. To boil it down we have a safty net if all goes wrong where they have nothing.

you also have to remember that in these countries they also earn on average far less and their currancy is a joke so as a %of their earnings youll find they could be spending more on it than us
