And I can't get my dear mother to stop eating bags of mint crumbles..after she stopped smoking. She is diabetic and it's dangerous. Doc said sugar is as addictive as smoking

Any advice as it's a nightmare?

There are sugar free mints available — perhaps but a selection of diabetic sweets and treats for her to explore.

I am diabetic and my consultant told me the so called diabetic treats are as bad as "normal" ones ... the only way is really to stop eating them - easier said than done if you have a sweet tooth (luckily I don't)

Central

Sugar free treats and nibbles such as celery, cucumber, cherry tomatoes (have natural sugars and carbs in them).

Thanks for your replies. It's worrying. I am going to look into sugar free sweets and see if there's anything better for her

Might be that she's just missing doing something with her mouth () I know that switching to chewing gum has helped a few people, not necessarily the nicotine stuff either.

My mother had diabetes. She was absolutely addicted to sugar. She used to not eat, just so her blood sugar would drop and then use it as an excuse to eat candy ("but I need this candy - my blood sugar is dangerously low!"). Eventually she lost her leg and earlier this year she lost her life. Take it seriously - it is an addiction and it's dangerous. And sugar free stuff doesn't make much of a difference, she ate that crap, too, and it helped to make her sick.

I hope you are able to help your mom. It can be hard, really hard, to help a mother with something like this when they don't want to help themselves.

Get her to start putting a small amount of money into coconut oil in her tea or coffee.

And apple cider vinegar mixed with a sugar free drink.

Your doc is right sugar is as addictive as smoking and cocaine. to get her to change will be very difficult because she has developed long-ingrained habits. firstly she has to want to change and understand that her former habit(sugar lifestyle) is not helping her and adopt a new lifestyle and approach to food.

Swap mint and crumbles for nuts, seeds, pistachios, eggs, avocados etc
