when you have a bone scan , do you have to go into one of those tube things , panicking because last time i went in one i freaked out xx

I would assume that for a bone scan they would use a CT scanner, which is the ring not the tube, rather than an MRI as they don't need to see the soft tissue but it's best to ask the hospital where it is getting done, if it is an MRI (tube) just let them know you have had issues with them in the past they will do what ever they can to help.

Probably not but just trying to make light of a nervy situation..probably not very well either.

My dad had to go in one for a brain scan once and told them he'd panic and they popped in a bigger machine, though there was a wait.

Talk to the team who'll be doing it, seriously, hospitals are used to folk freaking out...talk to them ahead of time and see what they suggest

Good idea i will , last time on the third atempt they gave me a rather nice jab that helped a lot lol

I dont know really doc said he wanted them checking as ive shrunk a lot over the last two years xx

I never opened my eyes during my MRI .... the lady played music to me ... put headphones on me .... and spoke to me ... reassuring me all the time ... it wasnt particularly nice .... but ... I just didnt look ....

Yes youcan still hear the noises ... but it has to be done ... good luck op

I had a DEXA bone scan a few days ago. It was not in an MRI scanner. You just lay on a bed and the machine moves up and down your body.

I have regular brain scans in an an MRI scanner. I also have a contrast dye injected halfway through so they can take a second set of enhanced scans. My head is clamped for nearly 30mins. It can feel claustrophobic but they give you a buzzer to press if you can't cope. I just try to think happy thoughts during that time.

I had a DEXA scan recently and it was as the previous poster said, just laid on a bed and the machine moved around me and the bed moved a bit

I’ve had several MRI scans too and I just keep my eyes shut, they aren’t great but if you can relax and think of other things then it’s soon over

So, a bone scan can mean one of a couple of things;

Most likely is something called a DEXA, or bone densiometry scan. The machine is nice and open, and the scan doesnt take too long.

It's also possible that you could be having a nuclear medicine bone scan, which involves an injection of radioactive tracer followed by a scan under a gamma camera. It takes longer than a DEXA scan and may involve a quick spin through a CT scanner attached to the machine afterwards (large ring-like machine), though the CT portion would only last for a couple of seconds. The CT portion would depend on what kind of machines your hospital uses - some of them don't include the CT portion.

It's also possible that you're just being referred for a plain-film spine x-ray as a first step to rule out anything obvious - I'm sure I don't need to explain this one!

Anyway, if you have any questions about these different kinds of scans, feel free to message me and I'll do my best to give you an answer.

Also - when you get your referral letter it'll likely tell you specifically what kind of scan you'll be having!

If it's an MRI, yes. I got lorazepam from my GP to relax me, and took two types of antidepressants the night before. I was fine for the 30 minutes I was in, and I had to go in head first.

If it’s an MRI ask it they have an open scanner, I’m some you can take a friend/partner to hold your hand and reassure you. Talk to the scanner technician they will help you with everything you need and good luck x

I had a full bone scan dine and i didn't have to go into one if those. I think they're more cat scan or mri.

Not scan related, but I had to have a bone marrow biopsy several years ago after I had a pulmonary embolism. That was the single most pain I had suffered in my life, and they did it twice the barstewards

osteoporosis but i carnt understand why they are only doing my lower back and one hip when its my knees that i have most pain with ,and they said i have a slight curvicture of the neck, probably spelt that wrong lol x

I had an MRI on my spine because I have thin ankle bones; which they found while doing a scan on my achilles tendon. I'm guessing it's because the lower spine and hips are the most common places to get osteoporosis.

this, I am so clostrophobic I can't stand in a corner. But close your eyes and imagine you are somewhere else, noisy but not small. Hopefully you will be in the doughnut and not the torpedo tube anyway. But fear is only chemicals and you can talk your way out of it.

Maybe they want to look for complication of osteoporosis such a micro fractures.

As for bone scan..it can be either dexa scan or nuclear bone scan with Tc99. Not sure which one is yours.

That is unlikely to have been the original indication for the scan. MRI isn't the modality of choice for assessing osteoporosis - It's best for looking at soft tissue.
