Cold Days by Jim Butcher and The World Of Yesterday by Stefan Zweig. That last one is utterly captivating. Zweig was an Austrian Jew, a concert pianist and novelist who was born around the end of the nineteenth century to a wealthy trading family in Vienna and saw both World Wars. He sent off the manuscript to that autobiographical work just before committing suicide in 1942 in Brazil as he felt he’d seen the death of liberalism and the world would never be the same for him again. It’s beautifully written and heartbreaking at the same time. Highly recommend.
