With the Dell you will have decent backup service, I don't know about Acer. I have an Inspiron and have had no problems with it.

I use iMac at home and MacBook I'd never go back to using a PC by choice but that's only based on what I use them for ( besides downloading porn ( purely for research purposes!) and the price of them makes them a bit of an investment if you don't really need one) out of Dell & Acer I'd prob favour Dell as the support seems better I've had to repair both before today and acers support was a bit lacking.

Hope that helps xx

Big time Mac user here since 1988! I would also add that the additional price you pay does return to you as Macs need less maintenance and generally have a longer life. This is coming from a person who has worked in a company for 20 years that has had 50/50 Macs and PCs.

support is a good consideration but then do also consider how long you expect to keep the laptop before another upgrade, extending the support, the budget, what functionality you want etc etc

Dell, HP etc you do pay for being the market leaders, acer, esystems you get more kit for your money

its all a balancing act but you need to know what will be important for you.

Its no good having all the features, knowing the benefits but then none of them appeal to you!

Its part of the sales process feature - benefit and you appeal

Lol i have a seperate cam that is fine and I have been known to cam here ..

budget ..up to 500

the dell 15r is only an i3 intel core 4gb hard drive and 4gb memory so not as fast, but the one I have now is soo slow. Yes dell have great help when you need it.I spose that is probably enough for my needs really .I just saw the acer on tesco site and it is really a 700 machine with 200 off.

I always get the very best i can afford at the time.

It says me keep upgrading every couple of years.

At the moment i have a HP system.

1tb of hard drive, quad core tv tuner with remote, lightscipe etc (most things i will never use)..had it a couple of years and very pleased with it.

The best thing is when i look at new ones it still is hard to touch the speck i have on mine.

But it was not cheap..and all i got was the tower.

I will buy a HP system next time..very pleased with it.

I spose I had this one for 4 years and dell have come out and replaced anything I needed .The first dell last 12mths and they replaced it totally free with this one as it was a problem from day one. suspect I wont be replacing again tho maybe one more when I retire whenever that will be.I really only use it fro very basic things just want a faster machine.

I bought this for my Wife for Christmas:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-VPCEB4L1E-Notebook-Processor-SuperMulti/dp/B004IZL3AE/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1315392717&sr=1-3

It was so good i then went out and bought myself one aswell. It is probably more than you need right now but that will give you a better life expectancy for the computer.

The viao is abit more pricey but you pay for build quality and reliability neither of ours has ever missed a beat excellent laptops.

I use an Acer, and my housemate has a Dell. The Acer runs great, has more USB ports and the power lead is at the side. The Dell one is at the back, and I always break those ones.

I prefer mine, but got a really good deal on mine price wise, so when we went shopping for my housemates, the Dell was the nearest we could get spec wise at a similar price.

Have had three Sony Vaios which didn't last as long as I'd expected.

Now using a Dell XPS which I've had for years and I extended my warranty last year which gives me another three years cover.

The service/repair usually come out to the house very quickly if anything goes wrong with my machine and their back-up support service is great.

I have a Dell and its the best PC I have ever owned. I used to be a Packard Bell fan.

I pay an extended warranty with it costs about £80 a year and you get software support in the package as well as hardware. Its coming up 5 years old now and Im scared not to renew the warranty because I have a sneaky feeling if you don' then they send gremlins to your puter. Seriously!

I have never had a decent laptop. The current one is a Toshiba with Windows vista on it I can't keep one for longer than about 15 months before it goes tits up.

So I would like to hear about good laptops other forumites have and can recommend if thats ok please?

mines an XPS 210 Lainey, white and silver - and I like that it lies on its side under the printer, in a teeny space and has lots of usb access at front. I have to agree breakdown cover is exceptional.

this one is an XPS M1530, it cost a lot when new but you can still pick up reconditioned ones from dealers for £300 or less. It's been bounced battered and still survives. Only thing I have had go wrong with it in all the time I've had it was my mouse pad right key went a bit tits up, the service guy who came to my house renewed that and the keyboard all for nothing.

all over the place

take the red one its a nice colour ,forget all the speccy stuff.

but if you are interested in that stuff i am impressed with the asus M4A88T-evo motherboards and if paired with the phenom amd dual core processor it will automaticly unlock the processor and give you quad core ,whack in 8 gig of ram and 55 quid for a 2TB hard drive,a freesat card and your away you got yourself a home theatre too with usb3 or is it a lappy your after ?
